1 Recreational Sports-Physical/Neurological/Visual All recreational programs are open to both individuals with and without a permanent physical disability and/or vision loss. The programs are planned, coordinated and provided by Turnstone staff member, Kevin Hughes. At your initial visit on becoming an active participant, you will be asked to complete an intake form. To register for a program you MUST contact Turnstone s receptionist by visiting them at either of our main desk (Peds, ADS or Plassman) or by calling the main number at (260) You can also register by ing Halie Smith at halie@turnstone.org For additional information regarding a program, contact Kevin Hughes at Kevin@Turnstone.org or (260) Disabled veterans and disabled members of the Armed Services will receive 50% off of their program fee. Here are some grant opportunities that can assist you in obtaining your own custom made adaptive equipment in recreation, sport and/or for everyday life. Athletes Helping Athletes Hand Cycles & Tricycles: For individuals with physical disabilities 18 years and younger. Applications Accepted Year Round *Covers the cost of the entire bike* The easiest grant you ll ever apply for! Learn more at: parentcontentid= &contentid= Variety Kids on the Go Grant This grant provides adaptive equipment for individuals with physical disabilities 21 and younger for items your insurance denies. Here are some of the things this grant supports: Van Lifts, House Ramps, Adaptive Car Seats, Starlifts, Power Soccer guards along with any sports equipment (like cycles). Applications are accepted year round. Individuals with Visual Impairments: If you are blind or visually impaired we would LOVE to chat with you. With the addition of the Men s National Goalball team living and training on our campus we re blessed to have these ambassadors with various levels of visual impairments helping with many of our programs. Our programs that are marked in RED have specific adaptations to allow all individuals with various levels of vision loss the ability to compete at a high level. Learn more at: Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) Providing Paralympic sport equipment & travel expenses for individuals with physical disabilities of all ages. Examples: Wheelchair tennis & basketball, sled hockey, skiing, racing chairs, archery, hand cycles, golf, quad rugby, sports prosthetics, and YES even POWER SOCCER is included now. 2 Cycling Come and tryout these sets of wheels! We have handcycles, recumbent trikes, along with tandem bikes that are geared towards individuals with visual impairments, available for use. New participants must schedule an appointment to determine the proper bike. This program is offered weekly. All participants must reserve a time to participate. Day Time Age Fee Tues 9-11 a.m. 12+ $20/month Thurs 1-3 p.m. 12+ *No cycling July 4, 20, and 27 *No cycling August 17, 22, and 24 Swimming Northside Park Swimming Pool has a swim night dedicated to individuals with disabilities. Please check in before entering the pool. A parent must accompany each child in the water. No registration required; however, to learn more contact the parks department at Day Time Age Fee Mon 5:15-6:15p.m Free Location: Northside Park Swimming Pool, Page Parnell Ave, Fort Wayne, IN Wheelchair Football Yes Football from a wheelchair. It s exactly how it sounds. This recreational activity is open to both individuals who utilize either a power or manual chair. A chair will be provided for those who RSVP in advance. July 6, 13, 20 Thurs 6-7 p.m. 14+ $20 Boccia The sport is played on a flat, smooth surface, where players must throw or roll colored balls as close as possible to a white target ball, known as the jack. The player, pair or team with the most balls near the jack is the winner. Individuals can either throw, kick or use a ramp to propel the ball which makes this sport accessible to many. Eligibility: Individuals with physical disabilities qualify for all above sports except Goalball Individuals with visual impairments qualify for rowing, track & field, and goalball
3 TAP (Turnstone Adult Party) Monthly Social Every month our adults have a gathering, sometimes at Turnstone, sometimes out at different locations. It s a great time to socialize and just hang out with friends your age. 7/21 Friday 6:00p-9:00 p.m $8 8/25 Friday 6:00p-9:00 p.m $8 9/22 Friday 6:00p-9:00 p.m $8 Location: Varies Contact Kevin for more information Prep Division Wheelchair Basketball Camp Turnstone is hosting a mini basketball camp targeted towards current Prep level players (kids 6-12 years old), new players to the sport, and with players who have been off due to injury and want to get back in the swing of things. Lead instructor will be Bob Walda who has 30 + years of coaching basketball (including coaching Turnstone s Prep wheelchair basketball team). The camp will include both on and off the court instruction along with a fitness component. August 7-11 Mon-Fri 2:00-4:00p.m $50 Location: Plassman Athletic Center at Turnstone (Fieldhouse) Table Tennis We re excited to offer this brand new program of table tennis often referred as ping pong. This opportunity is open to both the recreational and competitive individual. This Paralympic Sports is instructed by a certified table tennis coach. A great sport that's very adaptable. For individuals who have limited grip we can tape the paddle to their hand along with other customizable adaptions. Individuals can play either standing up or in a wheelchair. August 15, 22, 29 Tues 6:00-7:00p.m $15 Location: Plassman Athletic Center at Turnstone (Center Mezzanine) August 15 & 29 Location: Plassman Athletic Center at Turnstone (Large Group Exercise Room) August 22 Para Triathlon Clinic (Tentative) Swimming, Running & Biking!!! We re running a clinic to teach these three elements in competing in a Triathlon. This clinic will be run by Dare2tri which is an organization with the mission to positively impact the lives of athletes with physical disabilities and visual impairments by developing their skills in paratriathlon. Date Sept Location: TBD Day Fri/Sat/Sun Golf Looking to hitting the green this summer Turnstone has golf clubs, access to an adaptive golf cart and complimentary 9 or 18 hole round of golf that can be used at McMillen, Foster or Shoaff Golf Courses. 4 Goalball Two time Paralympian, Daryl Walker, will train and guide you in this sport tailored for individuals with visual impairments. This program is also open to those without a visual impairment as well. These individuals may participate by playing or helping on the sidelines. Competition Opportunities: October 14-15, 2017 at Turnstone August 3, 10, 17 Thur 6:00-7:30 p.m. 12+ $30 **$10/night visitor fee for individuals with vision Location: Goalball Center of Excellence at Turnstone Archery Shoot for the moon! Back by popular demand we ll be shooting archery here at Turnstone. Open to the experienced archer who wants to improve on their precision along with brand new individuals looking at giving archery a shot. Participants will learn the proper safety of Archery before shooting as well as techniques to help their aim. July 12 & 26 Wed 6:00-7:30 p.m. 12+ $20 August 9 Wed 6:00-7:30 p.m. 12+ $10 Location: Goalball Center for Excellence at Turnstone Fort4Fitness Training: Team Turnstone Calling all walkers, joggers, runners, and rollers! Get ready for the annual Fort4Fitness by joining Team Turnstone and letting us help you prepare for your race of choice. A unified team support that is creating awareness for Turnstone while training at various community parks. Train 1-3 times per week (equitant to 51 sessions at 2 hours = 102 total hours) Training & Race Day T-shirt Race Registration covered through Board sponsorship Staff will pick up your Race Packet Casa s pasta dinner the Friday evening before Health tips and information Training logs Training Sessions: May 23-Sept 21 Tues/Thurs 9:00-11:00 a.m. Any $55 May 24-Sept 20 Weds 5:30-7:30 p.m. Any **Attend just one session or all three for the same cost Race Day: September 30, 2017 Location: Rotation between Foster, Shoaff, Soloman Farms, and Kreager Bowling Bowling is an inclusive, accessible program that allows everyone to come together for a great time of bowling and socialization. 5 Competitive Sports -Physical/Neurological/Visual We have several competitive sports opportunities available, each with their own criteria and program fees. All competitive sports are open to all individuals with a permanent physical disability and/or vision loss. The competitive sports are ran by many different coaches, who are knowledgeable and passionate about the sport they are coaching. When on a competitive team, individuals will need to have the ability to travel to away tournaments. Turnstone does not provide transportation to any tournament. To register for a competitive sport contact Molly Cinker at Molly@turnstone.org or call (260) NEW! Rowing (June August) We re hitting the water. We ll be utilizing the St. Mary s River starting near the iconic Wells Street Bridge. Rowing instruction will be led by Concordia High School rowing coach & their athletes who have all been trained by the Louisville, KY program which is considered the top adaptive rowing organization in the USA. June 12 - August 28 Mon 5:30-7:00 p.m. 16+ TBD Location: Behind the Fort Wayne Outfitters & Bike Depot (1004 Cass St, Fort Wayne, IN 46808) Limited Spots Available. All participants MUST pre-register by contacting Molly Cinker Sled Hockey (Aug April) If you like the ice, sled hockey is for you! Sled Hockey consist of athletes using sleds and two sticks with pics to propel themselves around the ice rink. This is a team sport where five individuals and one goalie compete against teams. Competition Opportunity: February 10-11, 2018 at SportONE Parkview Icehouse (3869 Ice Way, Fort Wayne, IN 46805) OPENING CAMP August 12 Saturday 8:00a-4:00pm 13+ WEEKLY PRACTICES August 20 August 27 2:50p-3:50pm 3:10p-4:10pm ***Full schedule will be sent to registered players Location: SportONE Parkview Icehouse (3869 Ice Way, Fort Wayne, IN 46805) Track and Field (Feb July) Track and Field is a very diverse sport, which allows athletes to perform in individual events or as a team. Athletes work towards their own personal goals in throwing shot put, javelin, racing in a racing chair and many other opportunities. Come check it out! 6 Power Soccer This is soccer with a fun twist. Athletes use their strike force chairs to push an enlarged soccer ball down the court into the opponents goal. This is a t e a m s p o r t t h a t encourages team work and communication. While plays and tactics are similar, special rules, such as those to accommodate dribbling from a wheelchair, are also in place.
