1 Getting Involved Opportunities in this issue are open to both individuals with and without a permanent physical disability and/or visual impairments. Register At your initial visit on becoming an active participant, you will be asked to complete an intake form. To register for a Recreational you MUST contact Turnstone s receptionist by visiting them at the Plassman Athletic Center main desk or by calling the main number at (260) Payment due upon registration. To register for a Community please follow the instructions for that specific on pages 4 & 5 Individuals with Visual Impairments: If you are blind or visually impaired, we would LOVE to chat with you. With the addition of the Men s & Women s Resident Goalball teams living and training on our campus, we re blessed to have these ambassadors with various levels of visual impairments helping with many of our s. Our s that are marked in RED have specific adaptations to allow all individuals with various levels of vision loss the ability to compete at a high level. Individuals are welcome to participate in all our s; however, please contact the appropriate coordinator to confirm any adaption that might be needed. Individuals with Physical Disabilities: All opportunities in this issue (unless otherwise noted) are designed and developed for individuals with a permanent physical disability that precludes them from participating at a high level with their peers in non adaptive s. Amputation/limb loss, spinal cord injury, spina bifida, leg length discrepancy, permanent joint disorders, cerebral palsy/brain injury/stroke and other orthopedic and locomotor disabilities are just a few of the examples that would qualify a person for s in this issue. 2 Cycling Come and tryout these sets of wheels! We have handcycles, recumbent trikes, along with tandem bikes that are geared towards individuals with visual impairments, available for use. New participants must schedule an appointment to determine the proper bike. Boccia The sport is played on a flat, smooth surface, where players must throw or roll colored balls as close as possible to a white target ball, known as the jack. The player, pair or team with the most balls near the jack is the winner. Individuals can either throw, kick or use a ramp to propel the ball which makes this sport accessible to many. This training is to help individuals gear up for the Fort-4-Fitness Spring Cycle May 19. Training will start indoors and progress to the outdoors utilizing the river greenway. Our coach is Steve Florio who is also a USA Volleyball s National Sitting Team Athlete Development Coach and the Head Women s Volleyball Coach at IPFW will guide you in this sport. Just as the name would suggest all athletes are sitting on the floor to compete in this sport. The net is lowered and the court is smaller but all other aspects of the sport are the same. Individuals with amputation and/or solid trunk movement will adapt much quicker. 3 Wheelchair Football Yes, Football from a wheelchair. It s exactly how it sounds. This recreational activity is open to both individuals who utilize either a power or manual chair. A chair will be provided for those who RSVP in advance. Course/Date Day Time Age Fee Course: 218SR-6 April 25, May 2 & 9 Wed 5:30p-6:30 p.m. All $20 Bowling Bowling is an inclusive, accessible that allows everyone to come together for a great time of bowling and socialization. The alley has ramps for those who need them. Course: 218SR-7 May 8, 15, 22 & 29 Tues 6:00-8:00 p.m. 12+ $20 **$8/night visitor fee Location: Crazy Pinz (1414 Northland Blvd. Fort Wayne, IN 46825) Second City and the Jesters - Improv Nick and Lisa from Second City Chicago will be leading an improv workshop. This workshop will teach you the basics of improve. You will be empowered to break out of your comfort zone, get silly and most importantly have fun! Pickleball has the elements of Tennis, Badminton and Ping-Pong. It s played on a badminton-sized court using paddles and a wiffleball. You can play standing up or utilizing any type of wheelchair (manual chair, power chair or sports chair). These sessions will connect you with other community members where you ll naturally integrated into the sport. The beauty of this sport is that truly everyone can participate. Equipment will be provided for those who RSVP in advance. If you re a brand new player or have some experience we have the environment just for you. Our sessions are designed to connect you with others interested in this great game. The sessions are open environment where you ll learn from others on the court. As the name suggests this is open to individuals with a physical impairment that either wants to play the sport either standing up or in a wheelchair. For those interested in competing, there are many tournaments Turnstone can connect you with. Get ready for the annual Fort4Fitness by joining Team Turnstone and letting us help you prepare for your race of choice. A unified team support that is creating awareness for Turnstone while training at various community parks. By raising pledges for Turnstone, you will receive a Team Turnstone shirt for race day. 7 Air Gun Open to the experienced shooter who wants to improve on their precision along with brand new individuals looking at giving Air Gun a shot. Participants will learn the proper safety before shooting as well as techniques to help their aim. For individuals with visual impairments you can shoot by using a SCATT where you can hear a beeping sounds that becomes a higher pitch as you get closer to the target. 8 Wheelchair Basketball (Next Season: August April 2019) Many of the same rules from its counterpart apply in the wheelchair game. While plays and tactics are similar, special rules, such as those to accommodate dribbling from a wheelchair, are also in place. We re always looking for new athletes! Quad Rugby (Next Season: September April 2019) The flow of the game is a mixture between rugby and wheelchair basketball. This is a team sport where four individuals compete on a basketball court with the objective to cross the goal line with a volleyball. This sport is tailored towards individuals with impairment in both their lower and upper extremities. The wheelchair they used are engineered to allow individuals with limited upper body push their chair at a high level. We re always looking for new athletes! Date (s) Day Time. 9 National Events Turnstone is hosting That YOU can compete in The Endeavor Games goal is to provide children, adults and military service members with physical disabilities and/or visual impairment an opportunity to display their talents in a proper and competitive setting against individuals with similar disabilities. Competition Dates: Friday, April 20, 2018 through Sunday, April 22, 2018 Ages: All All information can be found at: Junior Nationals is a weeklong national sport championship event for young athletes with a physical disability and/or visual impairment. A number of events are also open to athletes with an intellectual disability as determined by the International Sports Federation for Persons with Intellectual Disability (INAS). Competition Dates: Saturday, July 21, 2018 through Saturday, July 28, 2018 Ages: 22 years and younger All information can be found at: What Sport(s) do you want to play this year?
