3 SOUP LABELS Campbell s Soup is going to discontinue their Labels for Education program in August of this year. If you have any soup labels, please send them to the school as soon as possible. As of August 1, 2016, only UPCs with the Labels for Education logo will be accepted and redeemed for points into registered schools bank account. They have begun the process of removing the logo and expect there will be a limited number of products that contain these labels in stores through August 1, Once all Labels for Education logos have been removed from the products, UPCs will no longer be accepted. The banked points schools have accumulated will not be affected. ELECTION REMINDER-MAY 2, 2017 Just an ongoing reminder for trustee candidates filing for election. Candidate(s) must file no later than 5:00 pm on Thursday, March 23, A Declaration of Intent and Oath of Candidacy form must be filed with the Election Administrator (District Clerk) no later than March 23 rd. The candidate must be registered to vote at the time the Oath is filed. The candidate must also reside in the school district. For the 2017 school election, we will have two (2) trustee positions open. One position, currently being held by Shawn Beck, and one position currently being held by Johannas Brown. Both positions are three (3) year terms and will expire May If you have any interest in becoming involved in school government, please consider a position on the Board of Trustees. Please feel free to call or stop by my office for information or candidate forms. There will be more information in regards to school election in the upcoming newsletters. Cindy Cowan, Turner Schools Business Manager Phone: clerk@turner.k12.mt.us The following students have made the 2 nd quarter honor roll: High School Ella Billmayer Sarah Billmayer Brian Brekke Raegan Conlan Rylee Conlan Stacie Cornell Eddie Harmon Jack Harmon Tracer Heilig Melanie Watkins Rennay Watkins Cody Welsh Kurt Calvert Whitney Hunter Jr. High Brandy Calvert Alaynee Hawley Shyan Krass Laci Maloney Brooke Reed Ryanne Briere Ethan Heilig Lacey Hickel Austin Welsh ATTENTION!!!! In as blunt a language as I can say the district needs more than just one individual to step up to drive the Activity Bus. Prior to my return and even since I ve returned there was and has been more than one occasion that student athletes have had to be transported by parents. If we don t have individuals stepping up to obtain their CDL with the S student endorsement, etc. then, in all likelihood despite the availability of the bus, parents may again be driving student athletes.

4 SUPERINTENDENTS COMMENTS SURPLUS SALE As many of you are aware the school district had declared a number of items as surplus and there was a sale in October. Although many of the items were purchased there was at least one item that was perhaps overlooked by interested individuals. That item is the pictured weight machine which is available at no cost to any individual that would want it. It will be up to that individual to disassemble and remove it on their own. If you are interest, please contact Mr. McKenna here at the school. 3 rd QUARTER We have completed the first half of the academic school year and are now into the 3 rd Quarter with mid-term falling around the 16 th of this month. Parents, I stress again if you have questions about the progress of your children please talk to the teacher. Don t forget that you can check on each of their classes via the computer as well. LEGISLATURE Although we are always looking at budget numbers we will continue to do so even more with this being a legislative year. There has of course been a lot of talk about educational funding with the new legislature and unfortunately your guess is as good as mine as to which way it will go. The school is like any other place out there and experiences increases in all areas to include utilities, food, etc. and, so it s hoped that the legislature will provide funding to help at least cover inflationary costs. OPEN GYM We are always happy to have folks make use of the gym but unless it s an adult or the children are under direct adult supervision please don t have them just running through the school. CONCEESIONS A big THANK YOU goes out to students, sponsors, ticket taker(s), custodians, parents and everyone who played a part in making the basketball season a good one. Without the help from everyone it d certainly be a different outcome than it has been. The food that has been offered during the games has been very good and well received, thank you Mrs. Cowan. As you will note on February s calendar it s another busy month and other than a few bumps here and there the school year s been going well and again, thank you for the support given to the students and staff.

7 Working Together þr School Success Februory 2017 CONNECTION' Turner School On time every day Arriving at school on time allows your child to settle in and take full advantage of every learning activity Let him take the lead on this important responsibility by teaching him to set an alarm. Tþ: Suggest that he place the clock across fhe room so he has to get out of bed to switch it off. A "mind rehearsaltt Have your youngster "practice" challenging situations in her mind to boost her confidence. Before a cheerleading competition, for example, she could picture herself nailing her routines. Or if a big test is coming up, she might imagine staying calm and answering questions to the best of her ability Field trip learning When you sign a field trip permission slip, show interest-you'll inspire your child to learn more from his outing. Ask him to predict what he will see and learn. Together, look up the destination online or in books, and say something like, "I can't wait to hear which instrument is your favorite at the symphony" Then, follow up with him afterward. Worth quoting "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?"' Martin Luther King, Jr IUSI FCR FUT Q: Why can't you tell a joke while standing on ice? (( A3 Because itmight crack up. Great graphic organizers Organizing information in creative ways can make studying more interesting and productive for your youngster. Encourage her to try these graphic organizers-and to invent some of her own! Gars in a train Drawing a train is one way to understand and study steps in a process or events in a <.<= sequence, such as the parts of the scientific method or the plot of a novel. Suggest that your child label each train car with a step ("Ask a question," "Make a hypothesis") and add a picture to illustrate it. Toppings on a pizza Have your youngster draw a puza Ío visualize facts. On each slice, she should write a category of information (example: "Lewis and Clark," "Cartier," and so on for a qulz on explorers). She can draw toppings (pepperoni, mushrooms) and put a fact on each one. On the Lewis and Respect all around Every day, there are plenty of opportunities for your child to show respect for others. Here are examples. ll Clark "pepperoni," she might write, "Started in St. Louis" and "Ended at the Pacific Ocean." Letters of the alphabet Let your child divide a sheet of paper into 26 squares and label them AJ. Then, she could write a fact that begins with each letter. If her topic is habitats, she can define desert in the D square and rainforest for R. Being creative with lesscommon letters will get her thinking more deeply about the material ("Quick temperature drops happen at night in the desert" for Q).? / _t 'l /t o At home...the dinner table is a great place to start. Tilach your youngster to thank the cook. He'll show respect for the person's time and care in preparing the food. o In school...encourage him to be respectful of other children's backgrounds by learning greetings in the languages they speak at home. o In your community...explain that shoppers respect store employees by not creating extra work for them. If you decide you don't need an item in your cart, help your child return it to where it belongs. After you load groceries into your car, have him walk with you to retum the cart.? l' -rl O 2016 Besources for Educators, a division 0f CCH lncorporated

8 Home & School con N ECroN' Keep screen time in check Do you worry that your child spends too much time in front of a screen? Do you wonder how he could best use technology? Consider this advice for helping him to balance screen time with other activities and to make the most of the time he does spend on electronics. Aim for a mix. Together, look for ways to balance screen time with schoolwork, active play, and Fraction art Your youngster can practice identifying and representing fractions by creating this colorful mosaic with you-fraction by fraction. Materíak: pencil, paper, index cards, crayons l. Let your child draw l0 geometric shapes on a sheet of papeq such as circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, trapezoids, and pentagons. 2. On separate index cards, have her write any 12 fractions (examples: t,!, +, 2, Ð.Shuffle the cards, and stack them facedown. 3. Take tums flipping over a card (say, f). fict< a shape, and color in that fraction on the shape (draw lines to divide it into I equal parts, and color 3 parts). 4. When you've used all the cards, shuffle and keep going. Continue until you've filled as many shapes as possible. Note; If you get a fraction that isn't available to color, turn over cards until you select one you can use.? Front Royal, VA rlecustomer@wolterskluwer.com tssn I O 2016 fles0urces for Educators, a division 0f CCH lncorporated A plan for problem When your child faces a problem, having a solid plan can help him figure out how to solve it. So whether he's had a disagreement with a friend or has fallen behind on his schoolwork, suggest this approach. My daughter Gabrielle has always been shy and quiet around people she doesn't know well. This year, her teacher told me she was worried because Gabrielle rarely speaks in class. We met with the school counselor, who had some good advice. For example, I'm trying to let Gabrielle speak for herself rather than jumping in to "rescue" her. When someone asks her // Februo family time. Make rules about where and when your youngster uses a computer, tablet, smartphone, or video game (say, in the living room after homework is finished). Have him set a timer while he uses a device-when it goes off, it's time to go out and play or help you prepare dinner, for example. Use technology as a tool. Encourage your child to regard a device as a tool to use for specific purposes. He might download an astronomy app to help spot constellations in the night sky or a birding app to identify bird calls during a hike. He'll Iearn to rely on technology for real-life purposes.? solving o ldentify the problem. Let him write a quick summary of what's wrong. ("Elliott doesn't like basketball, but that's what I usually play at recess.") o lmagine the ideal solution. For instance, he probably wants to remain friends and still play basketball. o F gure out alternatives. Encourage him to brainstorm solutions. Examples: "Offer to play with Elliott at recess every other day" "See if he wans to find something to play that we both like." o Choose a solution. He could pick the solution he likes best or that he thinks is most likely to work. o Evaluate. Have him try out that solution and ask how it went. If it didnt work, then he can consider another alternative from his list.? Overcoming shyness name, I smile at her and wait instead of sayrng it for her. I'm also encouraging her to order her food in restaurants and to speak up at places like the hair salon and the dentist's office The counselor helped Gabrielle set a goal of raising her hand to answer a question at least once a day We're having fun practicing by playing school at homeand her teacher.just sent home a note saying she's seeing a little progress!?
