2 This past September Beta Pi welcomed a wonderful new pledge class of 38 freshmen. We met Panhellenic s quota in terms of the new pledge class, but we were also eligible for continuous open bidding. Beta Pi has not been eligible for COB in several years, so we were all very excited for this new experience. Recruitment Reflection Throughout fall quarter we enjoyed meeting several girls through the process and by the end of the quarter we had extended three bids. They all accepted! The three girls will be initiated later in the month of February. The new pledge class is enjoying getting to know each other and becoming accustomed to Kappa life. They are a group of intelligent, hilarious, and genuinely kind girls that we are proud to call our Kappa sisters. The two weeks of work week and recruitment were full of great teamwork, bonding and fun! Our retention rates remained high throughout the week a great reflection of the high morale and spirits throughout the house. All our hard work culminated in a The Journey Starts Here themed Bid Day that didn t disappoint. Running to Kappa with our new members after they received their bid cards was a highlight of my senior year. Formal Fall Recruitment 2015 was an amazing experience that I will cherish for a long time! --Kristin Hummel, 2015 Membership Chairman 2
3 Philanthropy Fun This past Spring, the Beta Pi chapter once again hosted our exciting tournament Kristy s Kickball to simultaneously raise awareness for our national philanthropy Reading is Fundamental while also honoring beloved Beta Pi member Kristy LeMond (PC 07). Within the tournament, each Kappa family coached a fraternity as they competed against one another in a series of friendly kickball games, a serenade competition, a hot dog eating contest, and a Kapture a Kappa social-media competition. This year s week-long philanthropic event also included an amazingly successful Bake Sale, where each pledge class came together to bake a variety of yummy treats, which we then sold not only to the participating fraternities, but also to other sorority members which encouraged Panhellenic involvement and unity. All proceeds we raised throughout the week granted us the opportunity to buy over 700 books, which we then donated to children at our Reading is Key Event at Lowell Elementary school, allowing every child to leave school that day with multiple new books and huge smiles. At Beta Pi, one of our biggest values is giving back to our community, and nothing beats a fun week of kickball with friends to support such a worthwhile cause. Katie Gibbs, 2015 Philanthropy Chairman 3
4 Social Events After coming back from winter break, there was a lot of excitement in the house because the legendary Icehouse Winter Formal was finally about to happen! Since this formal is only put on every four years, Kappas went all out. The whole chapter went to every fraternity house with a lucky gentleman who was asked on Icehouse. After singing a special kappa edition of Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice each Kappa gave their date an Icehouse shirt to officially invite them on the formal. Icehouse was held in amazing Fred s Wildlife Refuge and between the Chipotle catering, thousands of cupcakes and dancing all night long, Icehouse was truly be a night to remember. To end the school year, we had an amazing spring formal at Nectar Lounge. After coming back from summer break we started off the year with our classic Mariners grab-a-date, which was a great way to welcome in our new PC! Later in the quarter we had a Hawaiian themed My Tie grab-adate. We tried something a little new, and everyone s date was actually picked by another Kappa! Girls had a great time picking dates for their friends, as well as getting to dress up in Hawaiian gear. We clearly had such a fun and exciting year of social events in 2015 and we cannot wait to see what awaits us in 2016! Francis Paoli, 2016 Social Chairman 4
5 Study Abroad and Academics Beta Pi s have achieved overwhelming success this past academic year. Winter and Spring quarters of 2015, we ranked fourth in grades out of all sororities. This past autumn quarter, we had a chapter GPA of 3.51, our highest GPA thus far. We continue to set goal GPAs at the beginning of each quarter, so that members have a goal to strive for throughout the quarter. In addition to giving out scholarship pearls to the top grade earner in each pledge class, we have begun giving out rewards to each pledge class s hardest worker. It has been a great year of academic success and we are excited to emulate that same success going forward! -Catty Zhang, 2016 Vice President of Academic Excellence I studied abroad in Singapore because I wanted to have a unique experience submerged in a completely different culture. I completed a semester long direct Business School exchange studying finance at the National University of Singapore. Throughout my trip I met students from all over the world, as there was over 1000 international exchange students. I had the opportunity to travel extensively while I was studying; I visited Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Hong Kong and more. I kept very busy getting my PADI scuba diving certificate, learning how to surf, practicing yoga, taking cooking classes, exploring the local cultures and getting good grades of course! -Kate Kobuke, PC 13 5
