Smith , address: - jps62@tiscali.co.uk SECRETARY & Editor of MADfolk Mr Chris Warrington , address: - maria_chris@talktalk.net TREASURER Cathy Bryan , address: - cathybryan29@gmail.com ****************** Minutes of MAD FOLK AGM held at Liverpool Contra on November 13 th Apologies from:- Eleanor Mehew; Chris Durkin; Sheila and Malcolm Davies. Mary Smith opened the meeting by welcoming everyone and thanking Liverpool Contra for hosting the meeting. Minutes of the 2017 meeting were approved and there were no matters arising. Treasurer s Report:- Cathy Bryan handed out copies of the accounts for the year which showed an income of and expenditure of which resulted in an excess of expenditure of
4 This was due to a significant increase in printing and postage costs for MAD News and a one off payment for a gift given to our retiring treasurer John Smith and the loss of the affiliation fee from St. Helens group who disbanded earlier in the year. Cathy reported that we still have a cash reserve of but we are having to use some of that money to subsidise our annual losses. This, of course, cannot continue and we will have to dramatically reduce our expenditure and increase income if possible. We will reduce our postage costs and review the number of copies of MAD News we print and decide whether it is necessary to continue paying our annual affiliation fee to EFDSS. We will also endeavour to find more advertising revenue. The meeting voted in favour of increasing the 10 annual affiliation fee if we thought that was necessary. Acceptance of the accounts was proposed by Brian Doman and seconded by Brian Adams. The meeting voted in favour of acceptance. Secretaries Report:- Chris Warrington reported that the MAD Folk web site continues to prosper and had received 5058 visits from January 2018 to September He listed the items to be found on the home page which included new sections on data protection and dance etiquette. The latest section added is local dances, which includes dance notations for several dances composed by local people. Chris said that MAD News can be viewed and printed from the web site and also urged members to sign up to receive MAD News by thus reducing printing costs. Election of Officers:- As there were no new nominations the present officers were re-elected. Chairman s Report:- Mary Smith regretted the closure of the St. Helens group which was a long standing member of MAD Folk. Mary thanked the officers for their contribution throughout the past year. She also thanked Bob Lightfoot for auditing the accounts and a special thanks to Sheila Davies for typing MAD News and arranging printing and distribution. Mary again thanked Contra for hosting the meeting. The meeting closed followed by dancing to the Rainford workshop band with MC Clare Park.

6 NEWSROUND SPRING 2019 We are pleased to report that the Costume Ball held at Heswall Hall in early October was a huge success with dancers from far and wide attending alongside many of our local dancers. It was wonderful to see the floor full of dancers dressed in a marvellous array of period costumes. A great occasion and a big thanks to the organising committee. If you are lucky you may be able to purchase tickets for the Adlington Spring Costume Ball which is held annually at the magnificent Macclesfield Town Hall. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are obtainable by contacting Reg on The MC is Victoria Yeomans and the musicians are Kendall Green. It should be a marvellous event. By contrast dances these days are not as well attended as they once were and clubs are moving to smaller venues. Dance organisers may consider a Costume Ball as an alternative to their usual dance format. They always seem to attract a full house and are a lot of fun. We had a special treat after the MAD Folk AGM. We danced to the Rainford Workshop Band with MC Clare Park. The group meet once per month on Sunday mornings at Rainford Village Hall and always welcome new members. For further details, and to check their availability, contact Mary on Looking forward into 2019 Liverpool Contra welcome back MC Rhodri Davies and Knotted Chord on Saturday March 9 th for their Spring Dance which is again to be held at St. Anthony of Padua Church Hall Mossley Hill. Contact Maria on , for details. Southport Swords are holding a day of dance in Liverpool on Saturday May 18 th featuring amongst others Black Anni from the Midlands and our own Mockbeggar Ladies team. It should be a great day full of colour and exuberant dancing. By the way Mockbeggar are available to add glamour and colour to your special occasion. Contact Charlotte, on , to check their availability. The Folk on the Coast Wirral Folk Festival will be held during the weekend May 30 th to June 2 nd. The venue is the Whitby Club and grounds Chester Road / Dunkirk Lane, Ellesmere Port, CH65 6QF. They have a great line up booked already so well worth going along. Contact or visit their web site for details.
7 At the same venue on Thursday evenings, The Hungry Horse Folk Club is always worth a visit. Have a look at their web site ( to view their programme of events. Interested in having a try at Irish dancing? Liverpool St. Michael s Irish Centre West Derby Road L6 5JG hold a monthly Supper Ceilidh on the last Wednesday of the month. EFDSS Steps for Success English Social Folk Dance Today Looking through the 2018 EFDSS magazines I noticed that the Society held the first conference on social dance in living memory at Cecil Sharp House on 10 th March. Some would say not before time as social dance has tended to be a poor relation to other EFDSS activities. The event was presented in partnership with People Dancing, the foundation for community dancing. The day, which attracted 85 delegates from the length and breadth of England, had dance workshops and advice sessions on improving technique, music for dance, history of folk dance and safe and inclusive practice. Also diversity and folk dance as well as gender free calling. Visit to find further information. Also in the Spring Edition is an article by Chloe Middleton Metcalfe who is the curator and manager of the English Folk Costume Archive. Chloe has embarked on a PhD in social dance in partnership with EFDSS. Chloe s research covers the period and focuses on non specialist forms of English social folk dance, primarily barn dancing. As well as collecting archive material mainly from the Buckinghamshire District, Chloe is keen to collect people s recollections and memories of social dancing. If you have any memories you think Chloe would be interested in please send them in writing to Chloe, care of Lisa James, Department Secretary, Department of Dance, Frobel College, Roehampton University, London SW15 5PJ or middletc@roehampton.ac.uk Chris Warrington.
11 Website Update Between the beginning of January and the end of September 2018 our web site received 5058 visits. Wow. I hope the visitors found what they were looking for. As well as providing information on clubs; bands and callers the site provides diary dates; events listings and a demonstration of dance figures. We have recently added our Privacy Policy to comply with the new data protection regulations as well as guidance on dance etiquette. The most recent addition is a section called Local Dances which includes dances composed by local people. They have been gifted to the dancing public to be kept alive as part of our living tradition. Please help to keep these dances alive. PS No copyright. We are happy to receive more donations from dance composers. Please forward notations and any other information to me and I will do the rest. We printed 100 copies of our most recent issue of MAD News which along with postage meant that we incurred a considerable expense. We want to reduce our expenses and reduce use of paper. You can view MAD News on our web site and also arrange for your copy to be sent to you by . Give your address to your group secretary or send it directly to me and I will arrange delivery plus a regular what s on update. Our web site does not come free of charge. Part of your group s 10 annual affiliation fee goes towards paying for the site fees and other administrative charges. Cost of printing can only increase and we may have to increase the 10 affiliation fee which has remained at 10 for the last ten years. One way in which this can be avoided is by reducing the number of paper copies we print. I know of a similar organisation to us who print only ten paper copies of their publication and send the rest out by . We don t expect to achieve that figure but we should try to move in that direction. Please have a look at your web site and I would be delighted to receive any feedback. Chris Warrington November 2018.
