TasDance is once again undertaking its annual educational performance project. This project is a vital part of the company s annual program as it nurtures the development of it s dancers as choreographers and continues to educate and inspire young dancers within the broader community. The theme for this year was chosen to provide the participants with a mechanism to examine their lives and their place in the world, and to be able to articulate through dance that Tasmania is part of the world stage. MicroScope zooms in on the individual and explores the idea that looking at the bigger picture often obscures our view of the finer detail. Using movement and imagery this young Tasmanian ensemble will take you on an explosive journey through the macro and into the abstract world of the micro. The choreographic talents of Trisha Dunn, Catherine Freeman and Emma Porteus have been utilised for this project and they have collaborated with sixteen talented young dancers selected from around Tasmania to develop the production. The performance ensemble has representatives from the following high schools: Deloraine, Devonport, Kings Meadows, Ogilvie, Prospect, Taroona and Ulverstone; successful colleges include Claremont, Elizabeth, Guildford Young, Hobart, Launceston, Rosny, Scotch Oakburn, The Don and St Brendan Shaw. This broad cross section makes this project truly unique and invaluable, contributing significantly to the understanding of contemporary dance throughout schools and communities in Tasmania. The choreographic team and ensemble of dancers exhibit innovation, expression and passion, and they share this with you in the performance. TasDance is assisted by the Commonwealth Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding body and through Arts Tasmania by the Minister for the Arts. TasDance also acknowledges the assistance of the Ian Potter Foundation, Rotary Clubs Hobart, South Launceston & Queenstown and the Estate of the late Winifred Booth.
Trisha, originally from South Australia, studied at the Queensland Dance School of Excellence and later gained a Bachelor of Arts in Dance from the Victorian College of the Arts. Trisha has worked with TasDance in various capacities for the past five years. As a performer in Passion fruit, Obsession, Hyper_mobile, Treasured Island, Ripple Effect, Fair Game and Light & Shade and as a choreographer for Storylines, Project 000, Generations, X-tinct, Fresh and the Wild Rice seasons. Trisha has also spent time with Sue Healey and Dancers and Chunky Move. Highlights for Trisha include performing in Seoul, Korea and Rishikesh, India for the 4th and 5th Asia Pacific Performing Arts Festivals. In June Trisha will embark on a Tasmanian tour with TasDance s new season Divine Harmonies, performing works by Sue Healey, Anna Smith and Shaun Parker. Catherine graduated from the University of Tasmania with a Bachelor of Performing Arts in Dance in She is a teacher, performer and choreographer who utilises her broad skills in many community projects including Yelling the Edge, Streets Alive Youth Festival and Roundabout Georgetown. Catherine performed with TasDance in the 1997 Poetry and Dance Festival, in the circus based show, Tease plus Skin Deep, the Passion fruit tour, and choreographed Sophie was a Fish for the Storylines season. She has also been co-director and choreographer for TasDance s educational projects 000, Generations, X-tinct, Fresh and Wild Rice. Catherine created her own style - belly-hoop, a mixture of hoola-hoop and belly dance. Catherine was a member of THE! Marching Girls where she developed her street theatre skills. In 2004 Catherine was part of the Rub Collective, choreographing and performing a solo work and short film.
Emma is a performer and choreographer based in Melbourne. Emma began her dancing career in Launceston with Stompin. In 2001 she performed for Ten Days on the Island in Stompin s Placement and in 2004 she returned to the company for Creative Workshop, which was performed at the 2004 Next Wave Festival. In 2004 Emma collaborated on and performed in the Melbourne Fringe Festival show Lamplight versus the Moon. This production was selected to feature as part of the 2004 Graduate Showcase held in December at Dancehouse in Melbourne. Emma is currently undertaking Honours at Deakin University researching the collaborative process. Hydro Tasmania actively supports a range of initiatives and events throughout the State with a particular focus on the arts, the environment and organisations that benefit young people. Hydro Tasmania is pleased to demonstrate its commitment to creating a sustainable future by providing support to the TasDance Microscope performance project. We wish all the young performers well as they provide us with some insights into how our individual actions contribute to the wider community.
Ruth Barratt-Peacock Hobart College Life is about connections, with people, with nature, with a myriad of small things, which make life full and rich. Alayne Bonney Devonport High School I am a believer in equality. Young to use their age as an excuse that difference, but I think the youth many opportunities to voice their their ideas into action. Anika Bratzel people often tend they can t make a of Australia have opinion and turn Deloraine High School I love the world! Its big, beautiful and full of people from many different backgrounds and religions... everyone has their story to tell and the right to tell it. Cherish Devine Guildford Young College An important part of my life is dancing. Another smaller, yet no less important part of my life is sight. If I couldn t see, I would miss the beauty of the world.
Alex Duncan Taroona High School I am excited by the potential to be anything and not knowing my place in the world yet. Emma Fallon Elizabeth College Even though the world has been torn by wars and aggression, it only takes one tragic event to unite the world as one. The world s beauty is truly inspirational. We really are privileged and fortunate. Bronwen Hart Ulverstone High School My favorite colour isn t pink and I don t like Delta Goodrem. Stephanie Heathcote Scotch Oakburn College I feel comfortable in my own skin. I am me! We can make a difference the journey begins with just one step. Those who have chased their dreams have inspired us if it s going to be it is up to all of us to make it happen.
Sarah Holden The Don College We are privileged and fortunate to be living in a place such as this, with so many opportunities. People should be inspired by the world s beauty. Ashlee Hulme Kings Meadows High School I love taking something really big and breaking it down into small pieces and examining it carefully, this way I fully understand it and it s purpose. Rajani Rajaram-Chivers Ogilvie High school Love is most important in my life. I think it s also important in life to help people and other living things. Shannon Scott Prospect High School I am happy with my place in the world. Simple things that I love are long showers, the smell of rain, clothes fresh out of the dryer and camping at the beach with friends.
Amy Van Galen Rosny College An important thing in life for me is my friends and family. If it were not for them I would not feel loved or happy. Rebecca Warner Launceston College The world is a place waiting to be discovered. Kayne Watson Claremont College The performing arts excite me to the max, the thought of standing on stage in front of hundreds of people and doing what you love is the greatest feeling. Jacquinta Young St Brendan Shaw College When it comes down to it it's not necessarily the big things in life that make a lasting impact, but the little things that often go unnoticed, such as a smile from a stranger or a well done from a teacher, remind us of the importance of our existence and our right to a place in a greater whole.
