3 From the Presidents Pen. Christmas time has arrived, the decorations are up and our members are all smiling and looking forward to a bit of time at the beach, or visiting families through-out New Zealand. Thank you to Pam, our Bar Manager for putting the decorations up. This is the time of year that you should stop, and think of those members who do not have family nearby, and will be on their own over Christmas. If you can take a little time and pay a visit to them on Christmas day, I am sure it will be well received by those you visit. Last Sunday, SANTA arrived at the RSA Clubrooms to the Pirates and Princess Christmas Party for the younger generation of 2 to 12 year olds. They had a lot of fun, playing games, eating and drinking and of cause receiving presents from Santa. A lolly scramble was held outside on the green, and it was great to see the older children giving lollies to the younger ones who had not been successful in getting any lollies. What a fantastic Christmas spirit the older children showed to the younger ones. A special thank you to Pam, Paula and Marlene for organising the Kids Christmas Party and to Di in the kitchen for the food which they all eagerly devoured. Nothing was left except empty plates. On Sunday the 16th December 2018 at 1300 hours (or 1.00pm) there will be an Awards Presentation Ceremony in the Clubrooms for 2 of our dedicated, well liked and admired members: Archie Dixon - (Posthumously) will be awarded a Gold Star and Bar and Certificate, which will be presented to Alan Dixon, Archie s brother. The other two awards will be presented to Margaret Burnard Merit Badge and Certificate and a Long Service Award (30 years) Certificate. ALL members are most welcome to attend. The presentations will be made by Bob (Bukit) Hill, the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services Association Vice-President who has flown up from Wellington for the day to present these awards. The Bar will be open after the completion of the Ceremony along with afternoon tea. Note medals are to be worn. Members of our RSA who visit veterans and other RSA members unable to come along to the clubrooms were invited along to a Christmas lunch on Thursday, organised by Colleen and the Support Services office. What a great group of Members they are, all so thankful that they can visit those less mobile than the rest of us; they give of their time to visit them in their home or in a Rest home. They regularly carry out these visits, to ensure they have everything that they need and also to ensure that they have someone to chat to. It must be horrible if no one visits them. Try it yourself, don t talk or see anyone for a day, those on their own suffer this every day. If you can make yourself available to carry out these courtesy visits, drop your name and contact number into Colleen or to Angela who will pass it on to Colleen for you. Our hours of operation over the Christmas New Year period are on the Notice Board, the main entrance and also elsewhere in this Newsletter. So, please take note of these days; as the Club is here and open for your enjoyment. In the New Year, the Bar Staff will be starting to enforce the rules on receiving the discount on purchases over the bar more stringently. January will be a running in period. Please make sure you have your card ready to swipe for your discount when you make your purchase. At the end of January 2019, if you do not have your card in your hand at time of purchase you will NOT get any discount and will be charged the full amount. No exceptions. The Bar Staff will be enforcing this 100% at the end of January If you have any complaints on this, please come and see me, Chris Harold, president. The Entertainment committee deserve a big thank you from all the members, for arranging entertainment each Friday and the odd Saturday. They are already confirming arrangements for 2019 entertainment for you. One of the first Sunday entertainments that has been organised is the PARTY ON THE GRASS that is organised for Sunday the 19th of January 2019, so please note it down in your new 2019 Diary, and we will see you all along out in the sun on the Green, having a great time. It will be an open mike event so bring along your charts to sing with the band, we will be having a BBQ (Steak Roll & Sausage Sizzle with onions) and a $20 buck-it (4 Beers, wines. RTD s or Non Alcoholic or any way you want to mix them). From the Whangarei RSA Executive Committee I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Enjoy yourselves whether at the beach, at home or visiting family and friends in New Zealand or overseas. Drink in moderation, DO NOT Drink and Drive, stay the night or do not drink if you know you have to drive. Merry Christmas from Glenis and I, see you in the New Year. Chris Harold, President
