PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE Dear Awesome Osceola Families, It is hard to believe we are quickly approaching the Holiday Break in December. I want to express my sincere appreciation to all of our families for supporting your child and his/her teacher. Your involvement is so important, and a big key to your child s academic and behavioral growth. We have grown together as a school staff, students, parents and community during first and most of second quarter, and I look forward to celebrating our students many upcoming successes. We are a PBIS, Positive Behavior Intervention and Support School, and this means we work diligently to recognize students positive behavior choices and academic progress daily. New this school year, our students can earn a Positive Referral that includes a small treat and a positive phone call home to the student s parent or guardian by Mrs. Richardson, Administrative TOA or me. Our school staff and teachers are here to help, and our teachers will be scheduling parent conferences to review your child s report card before and after the Holiday Break. Communication is critical in helping each student achieve their academic and behavioral goals between Awesome Osceola staff and families. We also know being on time and in attendance everyday positively impacts a student s ability to make steady progress. Please use our Twitter and Facebook accounts to learn more about and stay current with fun and exciting events at OES. We are here for you including our Office Staff and Administration, and we encourage you to contact us with your questions, concerns and inputs. Please call us at Sincerely, Lynn Bruner MESSAGE FROM YOUR TOA Happy Holidays Osceola Families! Our faculty and staff have been busy planning many awesome lessons and activities for our students. We have already had many family events including DARE Graduation for our 5 th graders and Bingo for Books. I look forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming events! Safety and Security is top priority at Osceola and in case of an emergency, you will be notified via School Message, which replaces our previous ConnectEd. Please make sure your emergency card is on file and updated in the front office. Please contact the office between 7:30 and 3:30 to update your card. Our two emergency evacuation sites are First United Methodist Church located at 336 S. Halifax Dr. and Seabreeze High School located at 2700 N. Oleander Blvd. In case of an evacuation, you will be notified via School Message as to which site students will be brought to. Thank you for your continued support as we continue to make Osceola Awesome! Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Sincerely, Mrs. Amy Richardson amricha1@volusia.k12.fl.us (386) ext

Keeping Up with Kindergarten We have been very busy learning new things in Kindergarten. The students really enjoyed dressing up for our Thanksgiving dessert feast. The students made a vest and drew Indian pictures with a message on it. They made a necklace with dyed noodles and a headband to wear to our Thanksgiving dessert feast. They all enjoyed the yummy desserts and had a fun time playing games after eating. We hope the Kindergarten parents are enjoying getting our weekly Kindergarten Korner newsletter. This has information about what we are learning in each subject area. The month of December is going to be a busy time for us. We are having Santa come to visit the students. He usually brings Mrs. Claus and several elves with him. We enjoy cookies and milk with Santa. Please remember to review the December sight words. By now your child should know 36 sight words. Please practice these sight words daily. Feel free to move onto the next month if your child has mastered the words. FUN IN 1ST GRADE In First Grade, we will be learning about holiday traditions around the world in Social Studies. In Science we will focus on the properties of Matter. In Math we will be comparing and ordering numbers to 120. In writing our focus is non-fiction writing about Arctic Animals. Happy Holidays from the First Grade Team.

Second grade is GLOWING this school year! We are still busy learning, growing and having fun! We wrapped up October with GLOW DAY! Second graders spent the day solving math word problems, text marking, recounting stories and using text evidence to answer questions while everything in their classrooms glowed! Stay tuned to see what other fun learning activities the students will be participating in! We are still encouraging second graders to develop a little more independence at school in their academics, social interactions and daily tasks. Parents we appreciate you helping us at home! With the holidays approaching we understand that life gets busy. We encourage you to keep a school routine with your child by helping your child get to school on time and do their homework each and every day. Making sure your child brings their backpack, folder and lunch box each day is also a very helpful routine. Please remember to take special note of anything in the Attention Please side of your child's folder each night. We are always in need of tissues, hand sanitizer and Ziploc baggies of all sizes. If you have any questions, comments or concerns please contact us via Remind or by placing a note in the Attention Please side of your child's folder! TERRIFIC THIRD GRADE Third Grade is gearing up for the upcoming holiday! We will be learning about Christmas traditions all over the world. Do you have a tradition from another country you would like to share with us? Then do the "Holiday Project" with your child and let us learn about it. We would also like to celebrate kindness this time of year! Encourage your child to do a Random Act of Kindness every day! Show the enjoyment of helping others and giving back to the community! In reading we are working on biographies. We will be learning about the first American woman to receive a pilot's license; a woman who overcame many difficulties to become a champion runner, and the first Hispanic Supreme Justice. In math, we will be reviewing fractions, measurement, line plots, elapsed time, and multiplication and division strategies. We hope everyone has a great winter break!

FANTASTIC 4TH GRADE 4th grade has been really busy these past couple of months. We have been learning and growing so much. We are learning to communicate effectively by using accountable talk discussions in our classrooms and becoming great citizens in our communities by learning and applying strategies that help us stay safe, respectful, responsible and cooperative. Please review below what we are learning in each academic area Reading- We continue to explore non-fiction texts and are now developing the understanding of text structures. We have learned chronological order/sequence and will continue working on Main Idea/details, cause and effect as well as compare and contrast. We are also reading and exploring myths and embedding our learning of story elements into them. Writing- We have been enjoying our Osceola Writes lessons with Mrs. Greene. She has been teaching us what makes good writing according to the Florida State Rubric. Students have been learning about Mega-Stuffed Paragraphs and how to put text-based evidence into their writing. We will continue working on both genres of writing: Expository and Opinion as the nine-weeks continues. Social Studies- We have been doing a lot of great reading, and discussions on Florida Indian Tribes. Your child has done an in-class Diorama project where they had to represent one of the tribe he or she learned about. It was great seeing the tribes come to life. ** 4th Grade participates in the district Social Studies Fair every school year. Students are select a topic to research, write a report based on their research, create a craft, model, exhibit or poster for their topic and do a oral presentation on it. Social Studies Fair information went home with students the week of 11/16. All Social Studies Fair projects are due on January 14th! Please help your child be successful with their project by keeping them on a good pace of getting the project completed. Math- We have been working hard understanding fractions and strategies to help us model fractions. We will be working on measurement after the Thanksgiving break. Science- Science has been a blast this year! We have been discussing matter and its properties. We will continue working on matter and go into forms of energy as the nine-weeks continues. ** The 4th graders have an exciting field trip coming up! We will be going to the Gillespie Museum at Stetson University. There we will be able to take a tour on rocks and minerals that we have learned about in science. Please have your child s permission slip signed and a payment of $8 submitted no later than December 6th. Please feel free to contact your child s teacher through Class Dojo or through the office to set-up conferences. We truly believe that it takes a strong parent-teacher-student team to help every child be successful through the 4th grade school year. Fabulous 5th Grade ELA: We are currently reviewing all standards and getting ready for our VLT2. We are working on our writing for the FSA writing test. Ask your child about their writing planner. Social Studies: Our Social Studies time is during our ELA block. We are currently learning about the important individuals responsible for the New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies. We use graphic organizers, turn and talk, and whole group discussion as ways to remember the Social Studies content. Math: Our focus will be on the reviewing fractions, rounding, comparing, scaling, and word problems. We will be taking the VMT2 and SMT2 when we come back from break. Have your child practice their standards on Learningfarm.com. Science: We are discussing matter, physical and chemical changes, and forms of energy.

Music Hello Osceola Families! We are rolling right into the Holidays here in Music Class! This is a wonderful time (the most wonderful time of the year?) for music, it seems. Between the classic holiday tunes of the past and the new ones that come out every year, music is often times a great way to get in the spirit! Students will be getting in the spirit soon enough, but we continue to focus on our core music-making skills like demonstrating a steady beat, singing with good vocal quality and developing our instrumental techniques. Encourage your student to teach you one of the songs or games we play in Music class! We have a busy schedule coming up, so please take a minute to read through the Music calendar below: Bethune-Cookman Music Outreach Program (K/1st grades) December 6th Ormond Beach Holiday Parade (Osceola Thunder) December 8th Osceola Thunder Winter Program (student assembly) December 11th Osceola Thunder Winter Program and Art Show (evening performance) December 13th Finally, take time to pass along your Holiday musical traditions with your children. Sing a favorite carol or song, go see a live performance or break out that old instrument in the closet! Celebrate the season with Music! Happy 2019, Mrs. Johns Hello Awesome Osceola family! P.E. has ben working hard throughout the end of our first nine weeks and into the second nine weeks with the first round of fitness testing. Students test out their strength, endurance, flexibility, speed and agility by participating in different events such as running the mile, 50 yard dash, sit and reach, standing long jump, pull-ups/flex arm hang, curl-ups, and the shuttle run. We do these events twice a year to see if we improve and also to find out which fourth and fifth graders qualify for Volusia County Schools Fitness Festival in March. When we return from the holidays we will begin teaching some fun sports like golf, hockey, and tennis. All of these sports are fun, but have lost focus with today s youth. We hope to bring a spark back to them as we focus on sportsmanship and hand-eye coordination with a long handled implement. As always, please be sure to know your P.E. days and wear the proper P.E. shoes! Also, don t forget winter is coming and we need to be prepared to play outside in the cold so please wear pants and jackets. Stay safe and have fun!

Did you know.. Reading to your child does not only benefit his/her language development, but it is only one among other very important benefits. It calms your child, especially when he/she is feeling restless. It promotes increased communication between you and your child. It promotes longer attention span, which is an important skill for your child to be able to concentrate. It builds listening skills and imagination. Books teach your child about relationships, situations, personalities, and what is good and what is bad in the world he/she lives in. Fantasy books provide material for his/ her imagination and free play. Fairy tales fascinate your child, and help him/her distinguish between what is real and what is not. Please read to or with your child today and everyday! Osceola has a YouTube channel where school activities are sometimes broadcast LIVE The Osceola OSCARS for the first nine weeks and the Kindergarten costume parade were all broadcast LIVE for you to enjoy! Watch our Daily news broadcast to learn about events happening at our school. Scan the QR Code to take you directly to our page and make sure you SUBSCRIBE today.
