PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE Osceola, the Greatest Elementary School in the World! We have seen the first grading period go by in a flash! Speaking of flash, we had our paparazzi lighting up the stage at our Awesome Osceola Oscars Award Assembly last week as many of our students earned awards for following our four expectations: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Cooperative. It was such a challenge for our staff to choose who would earn the honor of receiving an award, but to see the looks on the students faces after their names were called was priceless. We can t wait to see the students faces at the next award assembly. I have even overheard students talking about how they are trying to earn specific awards next nine-weeks! Our teachers are using the language to help students identify what it means to exemplify our expectations. By doing this, students learn how to attain the skills that will greatly benefit them in all settings throughout life. Our school has worked very hard at increasing our attendance. So far our attendance is improving slightly. Please do all you can to get your child to school and be on time every day. Finally, I am happy to announce that our school s positive behaviors are increasing. In the month of October, we had a total of 13 Office Discipline Referrals including bus referrals. This is a grand achievement! During an assembly to celebrate this, our students set a new goal for the month of November. The goal for November is five total referrals. As always, please call the school if you have any questions at Sincerely, Kevin Flassig MESSAGE FROM YOUR TOA Team Osceola continues to amaze me each and every day! The recent awards ceremony was amazing! Check out the pictures in the newsletter of this awesome event. Our safety and security audit is just around the corner. Ask your child how the recent drills have been going, what each of the codes means, and how they can remain safe while here at school. Safety has and continues to be a top priority here at Osceola. We are still looking for business partners to sponsor our school. Please share the flyer in this newsletter with local businesses. Speaking of partners, have you partnered with our PTA and become a member? The cost is only $5 and the PTA is a tremendous support for all of our school needs including student and staff recognition. The application is in the newsletter and you can return it to your child s teacher. Thank you for all you do to keep Osceola AWESOME! Sincerely, Amber McAndrew

BINGO for Books

Keeping Up with Kindergarten In fall kindergarteners are discovering all of the different methods that we can use to add and subtract. We are pointing to the words and using picture clues as we read books. We are learning about the first Thanksgiving and are talking about all that we are thankful for. We look forward to our dessert feast this month. December brings science lessons about motion and, of course, Cookies and Milk with Santa. FUN IN 1ST GRADE On October 31 first grade held Spooktacular STEM Day! STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics. Students spent the day working in teams to complete spooky STEM challenges! The morning challenge was to construct a working Solar Oven that could toast yummy s'mores. In the afternoon teams were challenged to build a Tower of Terror using only spaghetti and marshmallows. The towers had to be able to support a ghost Peep. The teachers were very proud of how the first graders kept working when the STEM challenges posed challenges! The teachers were also very proud of how the teams worked together to complete each challenge. At the end of the day students were able to enjoy the yummy s'mores they toasted in their solar ovens! We would like to thank all of the families who provided supplies to help make our day a spooktacular! SENSATIONAL SECOND GRADE Happy Fall! November is off to a great start! We are studying the water cycle and weather in Science. We are looking forward to a special guest speaker to talk more about weather. In math we have been decomposing numbers, now we are learning to add and subtract 2 and 3 digit numbers. Ask your child to teach you. You ll be amazed!! In reading we are making text to self and text to text connections. It has been exciting watching the students make those connections. Have a very Happy Thanksgiving!!

FANTASTIC 4TH GRADE 4 th grade was thrilled to see the Osceola Oscar winners represent their grade level with pride. We are looking forward to the next nineweek Oscars. We have been working hard in our Gardens. Some of our crops are ready to harvest. We have been tasting our hard work when our Nutritionist, Ms. Sara, comes in to visit. Osceola Writes has been AWESOME and our students are feeling a bit more confident with the writing process. Our Social Studies Fair projects will be coming up very soon. Students will be able to research a historical event and participate in the fair. More details to come soon. FABULOUS 5TH GRADE ELA/Social Studies: We con nue to work on the 5th grade standards. Currently we are focusing on theme and inference. Have your child prac ce more of these standards on learningfarm.com. Math: We are currently working on add, subtract, mul ply, and divide decimals using standard method and models. Next, we will move into frac- ons. Learningfarm.com is a great resource for prac ce. Science: We currently are looking at Ma er. We will look at chemical and physical change. OSCEOLA SCIENCE Congrats to our fifth grade team for being selected as Volusia County FUTURES mini grant recipients! The fifth grade team is tackling some amazing projects that will impact the study of Science on our entire campus. If you are interested in helping their efforts, please visit the following website and search for Osceola: grants/? sortby=sortby2&sortorder=asc&schoolyear=&subj ect_id=&business_id=&title=&keywords=&teacher =&county=

AWESOME OSCEOLA ATHLETES Hello Awesome Osceola athletes! At P.E. we wrapped up the first nine weeks with some super fun Halloween rotation stations. There were six stations for the students to rotate to. Ghost throwing, ghost getters, monster mouth, soccer ghoul, fill the witches hat, and dizzy bat. The kids worked on over-hand and under-hand throwing, kicking, and striking. Now that we are in the second nine weeks, P.E. has been finishing up physical fitness testing with events such as shuttle run, 50 yard dash, mile run, sit-ups, pull-ups, standing long jump, and sit & reach. We do these tests twice a year (fall and spring) to see if any improvements have been made and to also invite qualifying students to the county Fitness Festival in March. We hope to have these events completed before Thanksgiving break so we can play some fun Thanksgiving themed games! As always, the proper shoes for P.E. are a must for safety! Osceola Awesome Artists! Osceola Awesome Artists! Awesome student artists are developing the craft of paper weaving, discussing culture, creating posters promoting KINDNESS and designing sugar skulls. The following awesome artists exhibited their original works of art at The Halifax Art Festival: Emily Glass, Naomi Attar, Margueritte Pittochi, Payton Garner, Hannah Neumann, Stella Spark, Sophia Watkins, Shannon Clow, and Edward Budgen. Congratulations to Emily Glass! Her work Lost at Sea was selected and will be on exhibit at ArtHaus (3840 Ridgewood Ave., Port Orange, FL There will be an Opening Reception on 11/17 from 5:00-7:00 PM.
