2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Hello Osceola Parents, Happy May! As we reflect on this school year, so many exciting things have happened at Osceola. In addition to the academic progress our students have made, we have enjoyed your participation in our extraordinary family events. We thank our teachers and staff for all they do every day, with a special thank you to the talented Mrs. Interdonato for her efforts to coordinate our monthly newsletter. There s still more learning to accomplish. Let s finish the school year strong! This fall, School Year , will mark the 60 th anniversary of Osceola Elementary School serving Ormond Beach families on the beachside. I look back with happy memories of my days as a student at Osceola. Although much has changed since then, what have not changed are the wonderful students, parents, teachers, volunteers and staff members who make Osceola Elementary a great place to be. Wednesday, June 3, 2015, will be our last day for students. To our fifth graders, we wish you all the best in middle school. To our returning students, we look forward to seeing you in the fall. On behalf of all us at Osceola, we wish you a great month of May and a very happy summer! Way to go, Osceola Indians! Mary Ellen Speidel, Ed.D. Principal WHOSE CHILD IS THIS? Whose child is this? I asked one day See a little one out at play Mine. Said the parent with a tender smile Mine to keep a little while To bathe her hands and comb her hair To tell her what she is to wear To prepare her that she may always be good And each day do the things she should Whose child is this? I asked once more Just as the little one entered the door ours said the parent and the teacher as they smiled And each took the hand of the little child Ours to love and train together Ours this blessed task forever -Jessie Girl Rivera Whose child is this? I asked again As the door opened and someone came in Mine said the teacher with the same tender smile Mine, to keep just for a little while To teach her how to be gentle and kind To train and direct her dear little mind To help her live by every rule And get the best she can from school

3 WORDS OF ART Hopefully many families were able to visit the Ormond Memorial Museum and Gardens for the Volusia Students Create show that lasted through April 16. The show was a great selection of artwork from K-12 students around the county and included two of our talented Osceola Artists. As we finish out the year, look for a stack of artwork to be coming home with your student. Ask your student to tell you about his/her artwork. Ask them what they learned while creating it and what they like best about their art. Some classes have been cashing in the star stickers they worked for all year through making good choices in the art room. They are able to enjoy special art centers and special art activities like drawing in PHYSICAL EDUCATION NEWS The last full month of school is now upon us. Physical Education classes will be graded this nine weeks on Responsible Behaviors and Values. We will be using the skills we have learned throughout the year in cooperative games and fitness stations. We know that many families enjoy the beach and boating activities on the weekends, so we encourage students to use sunscreen, hats, and cover-ups to protect from sunburn. Many students come to PE and can t participate due to severe sunburn. Please write an excuse note if this should happen to be the situation. We also talk about water safety and review our Bicycle/Pedestrian education so students are sure to have a safe, fun summer! Remember to fuel up on healthy food and drink choices and play 60 minutes a day! HAVE A WONDERFUL SUMMER!

4 SKYLER S PLACE WHAT S UP IN MEDIA?? Our topic of focus for the end of year Feature Island will be to explore what students like. We will be compiling opinions on all kinds of topics such as favorite lunch or favorite sport and then learning how to display this information using charts and graphs. As always, various laptop software and ipad apps will be the tools used to transform the raw data into colorful easy to understand pictures. In these pictures our data will be grouped into rectangular bars with lenghths proportional to the values they represent. This is just a fancy way for saying we will be generating bar charts to show our favorites. This month the media center will be hosting the Sunshine Book voting party. During the year our students have been challenged to read all of this year s Sunshine Books. Sunshine books are special books selected each year by the Florida Association for Media in Education Organization. Come spring, students throughout the state of Florida vote for their favorite book and the author receives an award. Osceola students that have read at least five of this year s Sunshine State Books will receive an inventation to the voting party, which is a grand celebration event filled with games, food and prizes. Not sure if the Jeopardy challenge or the Kahoot contest will be more fun. RIF is coming. You ask what is the RIF Program.. RIF stands for Reading is Fundamental and under the PTA sponsored RIF Pragram every student will receive a free new book. The only catch is that all borrowed library books need to be turned in to receive the free new book. So make sure your library books have been turned in by the week of May 18th, which is when these new books will be given away. The Hit the Books reading program has begun and bookmarks have been distributed. To round the diamond on your bookmark and be eligible for baseball tickets at Jackie Robinson Ballpark you need to read just 15 minutes a night for 20 nights. Once you have completed all 20 boxes (5 hours of reading) parents should sign the bookmark. Completed bookmarks may be submitted to your teacher at any time prior to the program end date of May 20, So let s get reading!! Remember, the sky s the limit, Skyler DISMISSAL If there is a change in how your child will be going home, you must call the office at by 1:30 p.m. (12:30 p.m. on Early Release Days). No changes may be accepted after these times.

5 COUNSELOR S CORNER April showers bring May flowers.and May activities. This is always a very busy time of the year. I hope to be making my rounds of all of the classrooms in order to present the much-delayed Child Safety Matters program. This program presents our students with safety rules and knowledge regarding bullying and child abuse. Opt-out parent forms were sent out at the beginning of the year; new forms will only be sent to students enrolling after that time. To preview the program please visit The program is age-appropriate with take-home items to help the children practice the safety skills that are taught. If you have any questions regarding the program, please contact Ms. Sullinger at or ksulling@volusia.k12.fl.us. Our primary students enjoyed Vehicle Day on Monday, May 4th. They enjoyed visits from the Ormond Fire Department, Bright House Network, Votran and Volusia Lifeguards. The students always enjoy seeing the vehicles and hearing about how they are used in various lines of work. Future kindergarten students and their parents will be visiting us on Wednesday, May 13th. We look forward to the visit. It is always so amazing to see the growth that our present K-ers have made in one short school year. They of course, now prefer to be called future first graders and will enjoy showing the new students how it s done! Check out my new website at Kathleen Sullinger, School Counselor PIZZA WITH THE PRINCIPAL 5TH GRADE CAPTAIN AMERICA & DR. SPEIDEL SALUTE OSCEOLA ELEMENTARY!
