Inside this issue: Economic Dev News 2 Commercial Grants 2 Free Day at RMNP 2 Chamber Events 3 Bears 4 Training Series 5 Town Manager s Musings What a summer it s been so much to do at work and at play, and great crowds in Town for visitation and for the centennial year! As a couple of examples, last Friday night my wife Amy and I went to Peggy Mann and Dakota Blonde at the Community House. On Saturday morning, we took in the Artistic Director, Michael Querio s remembrances of his twenty years at Rocky Mountain Repertory Theater and the Corvette Show. That s just a taste of the available activities! This week, the RMRT wraps up its summer season and the Chamber Hosts the Spirit Lake Blues Festival on Saturday! At the Town, we are working on potential future uses of the Grand Lake Center, the former elementary school. A committee has been meeting throughout the summer on the first and third Monday evenings to identify suggested uses, consider new ideas, and to develop a business plan. Bids have been received for roof repairs; and a plumbing assessment has been requested to determine what modifications will be needed. Meanwhile, on another project, the Town is getting technical work done by Geoff Elliott, Grand Environmental Services, in anticipation of planned replacement of the docks and renovation of the boat ramp at the East Inlet. We are remaining optimistic in our hopes to complete this work later in the fall of The Town s long term effort, started in 2010 or 2011, in planning to build the Grand Lake Water Treatment Plant Hydro Project at our water facility is coming closer to fruition, through our association with Telluride Energy and the efforts of Dave Johnson, our Water Superintendent. We are working with Kurt Johnson, our consultant at Telluride Energy to meet the stipulations of the federal regulatory requirements. Currently, we are awaiting a decision on an exemption from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Once we clear the regulatory hurdles, it is likely the construction phase of this process would be in the spring of We are also working with CDOT on an Intergovernmental Agreement to help solidify the process to complete the future repairs needed to the West Portal Bridge. In 2015, we are focused on the planning phase for the repairs needed and cost projections. In 2016, we will be focused more on the actual repairs. Remember, the Centennial Celebration planned for the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park will be held at Holzwarth Ranch on Thursday, September 3, 2015 from approximately 10:30am -12:30pm. Please note that busses will be available to transport to the event. More details will be forthcoming soon. Hope to see you around Town! Jim White Constitution Week September September 14 thru 19 Grand Lake will celebrate the anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution with Constitutional scholar speakers, a parade, events, fireworks, a 5K Run for the Republic and presentation of the movie, Honoring a Commitment, on Friday and Saturday in the Community House. The Constitution of the United States was signed on September 17, Although the 4th of July, 1776 was the birth of our nation and our independence from England, the Constitution is what defined our nation and it's people. Please join in a variety of daily events in this wonderful celebration! Contact the Grand Lake Area Chamber of Commerce for more information at (970)

3 Page 3 Blues Fest August 22 On August 22nd International Blues star Ana Popovic makes her Grand Lake debut. Ana has played all the major festivals in the world and has headlined Blues From The Top. She recently was the only female on the Experience Hendrix Tour. She has toured lately with Buddy Guy, and Jonny Lang. She was also on the Joe Bonamassa cruise last February. Ana has been living in Memphis for the past few years after moving to the U.S from Holland. Ana has been in the top tier of guitarists for over a decade. Her recent show in Winter Park at Blues From The Top was reviewed as one of the greatest guitar displays in the history of that festival. The line up for Spirit Lake Blues Festival has Australian born Kara Grainger, recently moved to Los Angeles. Kara also has been starring at Blues From The Top and has toured the world for years. Powerful vocals and sizzling guitar. My Blue Sky is the Allman Brothers award winning tribute band. They just won their second 1st place award at a annual tribute band challenge with 2,000 people in attendance. You will get why they have become a Colorado must for festivals. The Keeping The Blues Alive band, sponsored by Joe Bonamassa has some firepower well known to Colorado. Austin Young packs a big punch, recently presented a Gold Top Les Paul by Joe himself, working with local organization Blue Star Connection and John Catt. Austin Young has a reputation for putting on a show you won t forget. Along with Austin is the famous Michaela Rae Knox, Michaela has been a staple at Blues From The Top and other Colorado Festivals/Events for over 10 years. A guitar wizard for a long long time. She and Austin have been touring this year with the support of Joe Bonamassa s Foundation known as Keeping The Blues Alive. Also on the bill is a strong singer/songwriter/guitar genius, Cary Morin. 2 time Colorado IBC winner in the solo category of that International challenge in Memphis. Cary is a veteran of touring and lives in Ft Collins. Amazing unique finger picking with a voice that you will hear in your sleep. Don t miss his set. Rounding out the line up is John Weeks Band with torch singer Stacy Turpenoff. Strong guitar and strong vocals will rock Spirit Lake. Kicking off the event is Ft Collins power trio the Symbols. Jasco Duende is a well known guitar virtuoso with fascinating styles you will not have seen elsewhere. Mer Sal on bass and vocals will keep you glued to the stage. We have a few rising stars on a second stage that will keep you excited while we change bands. All you hear all day is real people playing music, no cd s blastin you out of your chairs. The event starts right at 11am, gates at 10am. The Symbols, Cary Morin, John Weeks, Austin and Michaela, My Blue Sky, Kara Grainger, Ana Popovic will come on at 5:30. VIP tickets are $70, general admission tickets are $20 before August 22 or $25 at the gate. Chamber Chili Cook Off Contact the Grand Lake Chamber for ticket information at

4 Page 4 Bears in the Area Follow these tips to help keep bears out of trouble: Each year in Colorado dozens of bears must be relocated or euthanized because of conflicts with humans. Often times these conflicts can be avoided by following a few simple steps. Colorado Parks and Wildlife is asking people to do their part to keep bears out of trouble. Once a bear identifies a location as an easy food source they will return over and over again. Colorado, generally, has a two-strike policy for bears. The first time a bear becomes persistent in its search for food near humans, it may be trapped, tagged and taken to a remote area to be released. If the bear gets in trouble again, it is destroyed. Sometimes, however, if a bear shows very aggressive behavior on a first encounter it can be euthanized. "Destroying a bear is never an easy decision for a wildlife officer," Abbie Walls, Public Information Officer for CPW in southeast Colorado said. "But human health and safety is always our number one priority. That being said, if humans take just a few minutes out of their day to do what is right we could really cut down on the amount of conflicts we have every year." Bears are not typically aggressive toward people but may become so if food is present. Never approach a bear. If you see a bear, encourage it to leave the area by yelling, throwing rocks, or spraying water at it from a safe distance. However if food continues to be present they will likely return. - Keep garbage in a well-secured location and only put out garbage on the morning of pickup. - Clean garbage cans regularly to keep them odor free. - If you don't have secure storage, put items that might become smelly into the freezer until trash day. - Don't leave pet food or stock feed outside. - Bird feeders should be brought in at this time of year -- birds don't need to be fed during the summer. - If you have bird feeders clean up beneath them, bring them in at night and hang them high so they're completely inaccessible to bears. - Secure compost piles. Bears are attracted to the scent of rotting food and they'll eat anything. - Allow grills to burn for a couple of minutes after cooking to burn off grease and to eliminate odors. Clean the grill after each use. - Clean up thoroughly after picnics in the yard or on the deck. Don't allow food odors to linger. - If you have fruit trees, pick fruit before it gets too ripe. Don't allow fruit to rot on the ground. - Always close garage doors. - Keep the bottom floor windows of your house closed when you're not at home. - Do not keep food in your car and lock the doors. - Talk to your neighbors and kids about being bear aware.
