1 The Soul of the Rockies July 2014 Mayor: Judy M. Burke Mayor Pro Tem: Kathy Lewis Trustees: Jim Gasner, Elmer Lanzi, Jeanie Baird, Lisa Jenkins, Lance Sabo Town Manager: David Hook Tel: FAX: Streetscape Masterplan and Wayfinding Masterplan Meeting Dear Grand Lake Stakeholders: You can help influence the future of Grand Lake! Join us at the Town of Grand Lake Community House on July 17 and September 18 at 7:00pm to discuss two very important projects: The Town of Grand Lake Streetscape Masterplan and Wayfinding Masterplan. The Streetscape Masterplan will define the visual appearance, flow, and function of Grand Avenue. The Wayfinding Masterplan will create a signage strategy that will direct vehicles and pedestrians, reduce signage clutter, and reflect the authentic nature of the town. Please see the attached invitation and feel free to forward. Hope to see you there! The date and time of the next Community Engagement Quarterly meeting has been changed to coincide with the public outreach meeting that has been scheduled regarding the Grand Avenue Streetscape Master Plan project and the Wayfinding Master Plan project. The meeting will now be held at 7p on Thursday, July 17 in the Grand Lake Community House, 1025 Grand Avenue. Please save the date and plan to attend to get an update on recent community engagement committee activity, to learn about these two exciting new projects and to offer your feedback on the projects! Website: NOTE: Check the website for Public Hearings and News Updates. Inside this issue: From the Town Manager 2 Chamber Update 3 Buffalo BBQ Schedule 4 Lightning safety Tips 5

Summer is officially here and we are well into celebrating the summer season in lots of ways! Check out the calendar elsewhere in this edition for some of the events on the horizon and visit the calendar on the Chamber s website. If you are not already here, I encourage you get here soon to enjoy all that Grand Lake has to offer! As noted elsewhere in this edition, there is a public outreach meeting this coming Thursday, the 17 th. I encourage each of you to consider attending come find out more about the Grand Avenue Streetscape Master Plan Project and the Wayfinding Master Plan Project and provide your input! We are just beginning these two projects and we value your feedback. It will help the team understand the community s perspective as they move forward. A second public outreach meeting will be held in September as we get further into the project. As a reminder, the Streetscape Master Plan will address planning considerations for components of the ultimate cross-section of Grand Avenue (roadway, greenway and boardwalks) between Hancock Street and Portal Road and the Wayfinding Master Plan will address planning considerations for components of a comprehensive, town-wide wayfinding program. Both master plans are being developed with a Colorado Department of Local Affairs Administrative Grant and Town matching funds. The detailed design and construction of all wayfinding and streetscape improvements will be a part of future project phases utilizing funding that may include Town funds, grants and/or debt funding. Our next quarterly Community Engagement meeting is also scheduled for this Thursday the 17 th, in combination with the public outreach meeting mentioned above. Our committee update will be very brief at the beginning of the meeting so the bulk of the meeting can focus on getting your input on the two master plans. Each of the committees has been or will be posting information at this new Community Engagement website for your perusal: grandlakecommunity.weebly.com. You may recall the Livability Assessment that was held last September. We have recently received the draft report and have begun planning the follow-up Livability Workshop. The draft report is available on our website in the news archive under Federal Lands Livability Initiative. The Livability Workshop will be held this fall stay tuned for details. The reconstruction of the boardwalks around Town Square Park is now complete. They look great and we have received lots of compliments. I appreciate the commitment of the Board of Trustees to provide a safer boardwalk adjacent to our park for the benefit of all. This month s community engagement update comes from the Chamber. Be sure to review the article elsewhere in this edition from Samantha, their Executive Director. See you around Grand Lake soon! David Enjoy Summer in Grand Lake!
3 Page 3 Summer is finally here and we are BUSY with all aspects of the Chamber and the Visitor Center. It has been great to assist so many guests and businesses and to see our town buzzing with activity! We are seeing hundreds of visitors in the Visitor Center on weekends; as I write this on a Tuesday afternoon, we ve already had around seventy guests! We are so thankful for the Town grant that allowed us to bring some great part time employees into the Center and grateful to have such a dedicated volunteer group! The Grand Lake Chamber operates two functions for the Town of Grand Lake: all of the Marketing for the area and the Visitor Center. Through grants from the Town of Grand Lake (for marketing and the Visitor Center) and from the Grand County Colorado Tourism Board (for marketing) we are able to conduct these essential operations. Check out some of our marketing highlights from this year: Co-op in Ad in AAA Encompass. Buffalo Barbecue Posters are completed and being distributed. KRKY radio to do Buffalo Barbecue promotion. 51,844 pageviews of our website within the past month. At 149,510 pageviews to date- more than all of last year! Updating content to increase web presence. Advertising on Rocky Mountain National Park through GCCTB. Advertising Snow West for four months this year with web banners. Facebook at 4,388 likes, an organic increase of 2,600 likes from last year. The Chamber also manages many historic and newer events to draw Visitors into Town. Our upcoming events are: Buffalo Barbecue July 19 th - 20 th It s the Rotary s Pancake Breakfast 40 th Anniversary! Brews & Crews August 23 rd The Chamber is currently renewing memberships for our new August- July billing cycle. As a nonprofit, memberships, sponsorships and web advertisements are critical to continued growth and increased services; we appreciate all of our members support so we can best promote a sustainable year-round economy in Grand Lake. If anyone is interested in joining the Chamber or has any additional questions please schedule a meeting with me! Cheers to a GRAND Summer! Samantha Miller Executive Director

5 Page 5 Lightning Safety Tips While Hiking in the Mountains CHECK THE WEATHER: A bright summer day can turn stormy within minutes, with lightning, high winds and even snow. In the Rocky Mountains, thunderstorms typically develop in the early afternoon. GET OUT EARLY: If hiking, start your hike early in the day -- and plan to be down the mountain by noon. Summer thunderstorms can form quickly anytime in the afternoon. Get below treeline or to safe shelter before a storm strikes. ABOVE TREELINE: Get inside your vehicle immediately, do not lean against the doors, and wait at least 30 minutes after a storm passes overhead. If you are away from a vehicle, get away from summits, isolated trees and rocks. Find shelter but avoid small cave entrances and rock overhangs. Crouch down on your heels. BELOW TREELINE: If you are in a forest, stay near a lower stand of trees. Stay away from tall, isolated trees or other tall objects. WHAT'S SAFE SHELTER: Tents, trees, small caves and picnic shelters are not safe. A vehicle or a substantive, enclosed building are. Stay away from water and any metal. ESSENTIALS: Carry raingear, map and compass, flashlight or headlamp, sunglasses and sunscreen, matches or other fire starter, candles, extra food and water, extra layers of clothing, pocketknife, and a first aid kit. ********************************************************************************************************** AVOID: Avoid water. Avoid all metallic objects. Avoid the high ground. Avoid solitary tall trees. Avoid close contact with others - spread out ft. apart. Avoid contact with dissimilar objects (water & land; rock & ground; tree & ground). Avoid open spaces. SEEK: Seek clumps of shrubs or trees of uniform height. Seek ditches, trenches or the low ground. Seek a low, crouching position with feet together with hands on ears to minimize acoujstic shock from thunder. KEEP: Keep a high level of safety awareness for thirty minutes after the last observed lightning or thunder. Don t get taken by surprise. Watch the horizon, the sky, for developing thunderclouds. But if despite all precautions, lightning approaches, here are a few tricks that might help. First, if possible, descend or get back to the vehicle. If it s too late for that crouch down with your hands on your knees, keeping your head low. Get rid of all packs and metal items, placing them as far from you as possible.
