We appreciate your participation as we all work together to make Dodge City the best place to be. 2. City staff assisted with community engagement sessions this week on the Zoo Master Plan. The sessions were with individuals from the Dodge City Senior Center and the Parks and Facilities staff. There is still an opportunity to share feedback on the community engagement site at www. corub.co/wpzooplan 3. Concerned citizens brought an issue of pedestrian and traffic safety to the attention of the City Commission in late 2018 with a notice of increased panhandling on highly traveled streets. As a result, the City Commission passed Ordinance No on February 4th, 2019, that states that It shall be unlawful for any person to.approach a vehicle stopped on the roadway or attempt to attract the attention of the driver or occupant of a motor vehicle for the purpose of inducing the driver of the motor vehicle to remain stopped, slow or stop the vehicle on the designated roadway to facilitate a transfer of anything from the driver or occupant of the vehicle to the pedestrian or the transfer of anything by the pedestrian to the driver or occupant. In order to be constitutionally fair, both the panhandler and the driver of the vehicle offering a donation will be ticketed. While we want to protect all on the road, we also understand that many citizens stop for those in the roadway out of kindness and compassion. The City of Dodge City would like to encourage you to instead donate to local organizations that are established to help those in need. With the recent weather and the melting and refreezing of snow, there is an increase of potholes in the City streets. The water from melted snow causes the roadway to expand, and when it warms up again the street contracts leading to the formation of the potholes. To report a pothole, please go to RequestTracker.aspx and complete a Request Tracker form under Public Works >> Street Concern. These submissions are sent directly to the street department and allow them to tend to these concerns faster. You may also call Public Works at for assistance.

2 5. Dodge City is hosting the Kansas State High School Activities Association 1A State Basketball Tournament at the United Wireless Arena. For game times, brackets and to watch the live feed visit 6. The Dodge City Convention and Visitors Bureau has had an unmanned table with information for the visitors at KSHSAA 1A State Basketball games. 7. Weather Permitting, Central Ave. from Elm St. to Oak St. will be closed next week to through traffic so that the trees scheduled for removal along this section of Central Ave. can be removed. These two blocks of Central Ave. WILL be reopened to traffic by 5:00 pm, Friday, March 15th. They will continue to work on sidewalk and driveways in the 1500 Block as well as waterline installation on the 1300 Block. 8. City Staff submitted testimony in support of House Bill This bill would allow cities, that do not take the maximum increase allowed under the tax lid, to go back later to the highest tax levy previously allowed without a special election, as long as the increase occurs within seven years. The Visitor Center will be open on Saturdays 9:00 am 3:00 pm to assist those stopping in as they travel to or through Dodge City. 10. The 3i SHOW is in full preparation and ready to kick off on March 21st. For a full list of activities during the 3i SHOW, please check out their website at The Dodge City Fire Department responded to a structure fire call at Cargill Meat Solutions early Thursday morning along with Ford County Fire units. The fire was contained to the bone dryer, and there were no injuries during the incident. Fire crews spent about two hours on the scene. 12. The Dodge City Fire Department has been working all this week with their two newest firefighters on basic firefighting skills. Both probationary firefighters will continue their training the rest of this month before attending a fire academy in Hutchinson on April 7th. There, they will work to attain their Firefighter I, Firefighter II and Hazardous Materials Operation certifications. Once they have completed all of their required certifications, they will be able to respond to emergencies in a working capacity. 13. The League of Kansas Municipalities shared their 2018 cover story on women in local government for International Women s Day. The story of women working in Kansas cities in non-traditional fields features our City Manager, Cherise Tieben, and her continued work at the City of Dodge City starting in her teenage years as seasonal staff. This is valuable information for everyone who is caring for a person who has dementia. As always, we will meet on the third Thursday of every month from noon to one-o clock at the Dodge City First United Methodist Church s Library. It is easiest to access the library by entering through the east entrance. The library is the first door on your right. Feel free to bring your lunch as we recognize that many of you are on your lunch break. If there is a change in the meeting room, we will have notes posted.
