1 Community Newsletter Week of June 18-22, 2018 A publication of the City of Dodge City Public Information Office 1. The City of Dodge City expresses our most sincere condolences to the family of Bill Miller. We fondly remember Bill as a true ambassador for our community as well as the oldest working man in Dodge City. Bill served on the City Commission from 1975 to 1980 and was Mayor from 1977 to He will be greatly missed The lap pool at the Long Branch Lagoon Water Park will be closed to patrons on Saturday, June 23rd for a Western Kansas Swim Club swim meet. The Dodge City Family YMCA Demons Swim team is hosting the meet and warm-ups will start at 8:00 am with events beginning at 9:00 am. Teams invited are: Scott City, Liberal, Leoti, Great Bend, Hays, Dodge City and Lakin. Approximately 180 swimmers are expected to participate in this all day event. 3. Firefighters, Summer Rhodes and Matt Peterson, with the Dodge City Fire Department; Housing Coordinator, Mollea Wainscott; and Developmental Services, Vickie Williamson, installed more smoke alarms in the homes on Smith Street on Wed. June 20, These homes are in the City s designated Blight Program area. It also gave the volunteers the opportunity to discuss fire hazards in the home and home renovation opportunities. 4. The Kansas Health Foundation released a new report at their 2018 Symposium regarding the change of demographics in the State of Kansas. The report shows that the Kansas population is aging and becoming more diverse. The growth in diversity is primarily due to the Latino population, which is expected to increase by 287 percent in the next 40 years. Our very own Ernestor De La Rosa, Assistant to the City Manager and Director of Human Resources, was spotlighted by the Foundation as having a unique role of leadership in our rural areas. For the full story and video visit 5. This week City Department Heads and Supervisors participated in the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) Coaching Program that talked about "Creating a Culture for Cultivating Talent and Getting Results". The webinar shared information resources and best practices to grow and retain talent in the City of Dodge City. This also provided a platform to discuss areas for improvement and new ideas for the City organization.

2 6. Melissa McCoy, Assistant to the City Manager and Project Development Coordinator was interviewed this week for a podcast on GovLove about the Why Not Dodge program. GovLove is a pod cast about local government that focuses on people, policies and the profession. Melissa had an opportunity to meet GovLove host Kirsten Wyatt at the annual Kansas City/County Managers (KCCM) conference in Lawrence in April where she participated in a panel entitled Strategic Leadership in a Community Engaging Community Spirit and also spoke about Why Not Dodge. After the presentation, Ms. Wyatt asked Melissa to participate in a pod cast about the subject so more government entities could learn about the program and what it has done for the community. To learn more about GovLove visit 7. The City will be hosting an informative session with SPARQ Natural Gas on an opportunity to have a compressed natural gas station for the public in Dodge City. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 27 at 8:30 am at the Santa Fe Depot Training Room. For more information or to attend contact Melissa McCoy at Water crews had a main break on E Mulberry St and Ave A early Sunday morning. Crews were able to expose and repair the line within the same day. 9. The DCFD has received and are in the process of putting new Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) into service. These are the air-packs that firefighters use to go into all fires to protect them from smoke and any other toxic or immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) environments that they may encounter. Each firefighter has to be fit tested for their masks to make sure they get a good seal and then trained on the use and care of this new personal protective equipment. 10. Street crews went to 500 Cherry St and tore down an abandoned trailer house. They were able to demolish the structure in one day. Crews also filled in a sink hole behind st that was caused by an old septic hole. While there, crews capped the 4 service line. 11. The Dodge City Fire Department was able to assist the Mineola Fire Department with a fire at a biofuel facility last week. They responded with the reserve Air Rescue Firefighting Unit 413 which carries a special firefighting agent called Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF). This foam is mixed with water at 3% concentration using a foam proportioner built into the truck. It is a very efficient fire suppressant agent which is used specifically for fighting pools of flammable liquid fires. The AFFF works by creating a film that stays on top of the flammable liquid to suppress vapors and a foam substance that helps to cool surfaces while it insulates and separates other ignition sources or hostile fire from reigniting the vapors. It only took a few minutes for the fire to be but out using 413 applying the foam water mixture at 750 gallons per minute from the roof turret of the truck. 12. Street maintenance crews repaired areas where the concrete and brick buckle due to heat at Hickory and 6th and 5th and Ash. Crews also added sand to the unimproved roads throughout town.

3 13. The League of Kansas Municipalities (LKM) held a Personnel Management training in Dodge City on Friday, June 22nd. Amanda Stanley, General Counsel with the LKM, was the presenter. About 25 participants from the region participated in this training course. Thanks to the Dodge City Center for Visitors Bureau for treating the participants with a couple of gifts and welcoming packets. 14. On Thursday, June 21, 2018 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that states can collect sales taxes from online retailers. The decision overturns an earlier Supreme Court precedent, which will boost state revenues at the expense of consumers and sellers who have avoided paying sales taxes in the past. Federal reports released in 2017 found that state and local governments lost out on $8-$33 billion in tax revenue. 15. The 6th Ave. Extension Project will be open to traffic later today, Friday, June 22nd. The contractor still has to finish up a few minor items next week. If you see workers in the street please use caution. 16. The University Dr. portion of the Central Ave. and University Dr./Soule St. intersection will open to traffic early next week. It may be temporarily closed again towards the end of next week so permanent pavement markings can be installed. New pavement markings will also be placed on the Soule St. leg to provide a dedicated left turn lane for east bound traffic at the intersection. This will mean there will only be one west bound lane of traffic on Soule St. from Central Ave. west 200 feet. Until such time that permanent markings are installed, the driving lanes may not line up exactly with the signal heads. 17. Central Ave. Reconstruction is tentatively scheduled to begin on Monday, July 9th. A question and answer meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 27th, from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm for residents or anyone else interested in the project. The contractor will be available to discuss construction schedule and such. This will also be a good time to let the contractor know if anyone needs any special access due to physical limitations. 18. Eisenhower Park Bench Sponsorship: The Park will feature 13 benches and you have the opportunity to sponsor a bench for $1,000. (See attached brochure) Each bench will have a prominently displayed plaque with the donors name on the front center. There are 5 more benches available to sponsor. For more information, please contact the Main Street office at (620) or krissy@dodgedev.org.
