1 Community Newsletter Week of January 7-11, 2019 A publication of the City of Dodge City Public Information Office 1. At Monday night s City Commission, the Commissioners elected Commissioner Brian Delzeit as the 2019 Mayor and Commissioner Joyce Warshaw as Vice Mayor. 2. Also at the meeting commissioners approved entering into a contract with Felis Consulting LLC of St. Louis, MO for the development of a master plan for Wright Park Zoo. The master plan will give the city some direction into the future of the zoo. Also, work sessions for community engagement to provide feedback will be held. Information on these sessions will be posted in the Community Newsletter, on social media, Dodgecity.org, and in the Dodge City Daily Globe City dog tags are available for purchase. City Ordinance requires that every dog over three months of age be registered with the City annually by the purchase of a city dog license. Any newly-acquired dog should be registered within thirty days of acquisition or bringing the dog into the City. The cost of registration is $5.00, and a copy of current rabies vaccination must be submitted at the time of registration. A dog license can be obtained during regular business hours at the Animal Shelter, 104 N. Second Ave., the police department at 110 W. Spruce St. and City Hall, 806 N. Second Ave. Contact the Animal Shelter at if further information is needed. Dog registration allows the Animal Control department to identify dogs caught running at large and helps to return the animal to their owner. 4. The Dodge City Animal Shelter would like to thank Waters True Value for their donation of dog treats, as well as a family that donated a 50-pound bag of dog food to the shelter for the New Year. 5. The Dodge City Convention and Visitors Bureau would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the citizens of Dodge City. Because of the overwhelming amount of beautiful displays, the return of the Holiday Lights Tours was a huge success and exceeded expectations. The CVB looks forward to next year and eagerly await the return of the holiday lights! Thank you again for making 2018 an outstanding success! 6. Pavement continues to be placed on Central Ave. The contractor was able to set the two parking lanes and the mainline paving of the 1500 Block of Central Ave. this past week. They will be working on the driveways and sidewalks along the 1500 block along with the Brier St. intersection the next couple of weeks. Utility work continues in the 1400 block. Most of the 1300 block has been demo d.
2 7. City and Development Corporation staff working on the University Center project were busy this week with presentations and meetings. On Tuesday, they traveled to Oakley to present to the Northwest Kansas Superintendents. Then, on Wednesday they were in Sublette to present to the Southwest Kansas Superintendents. Both of these presentations were made possible thanks to the coordination of Dr. Dierksen at USD 443 and the Southwest Plains Regional Service Center. Yesterday, they met with Tom Arpke Regulatory Ombudsman for the State of Kansas as well as community college presidents and representatives from Dodge City, Garden City, and Seward County along with Dr. Dierksen and Dr. Springston from USD Phil s Floor Care Specialists have been refinishing the stage floor at Hoover Pavilion. 9. The City of Dodge City will be hosting community engagement workshops on the Comprehensive Plan in February. The City is seeking public input on how to improve our community. Watch the Community Newsletter for dates as well as the City s social media pages and the Dodge City Daily Globe. For more information contact Melissa McCoy, Assistant City Manager at Athletic Field Maintenance staff have been working hard on various projects at St Mary s Sports Complex. This week they completed a massive tree trimming project and worked on the construction of a new Baseball practice field along with the installation of a new backstop. 11. DCFD firefighters have been starting the year off by getting back to basics with firefighting training. Training includes ladder safety and firefighter survival skills practice. In this photo firefighters Summer Rhodes and Jon Huber are practicing finding their way out of a building while completely blindfolded. This simulates heavy smoke conditions. In this drill, they have to use the survival skills they have been taught to find their way into a large open area and then find their way back out with a fire victim completely blind without getting lost. They are running low on air and need to get out quick. There are a lot of obstacles between them and safety. The idea is to conserve air, stay calm and if they have to use the buddy breathing system so they can get out before they entirely run out of air from both of their tanks. The leading cause of firefighters who die from smoke inhalation in the United States is due to becoming disoriented and running out of air before they can make it out. These drills will hopefully keep DCFD firefighters prepared and operate safer at all structure fire incidents. 12. Parks staff worked to replace a broken slide and other components of the playset at Kiwanis Park this week. 13. The Cultural Relations Advisory Board held their monthly meeting on Friday, January 11. At the meeting, the board reviewed their purpose and responsibilities as well as programs for Ernestor De La Rosa, Assistant City Manager/ Legislative Affairs will replace Melissa McCoy, Assistant City Manager/Public Affairs as the staff person on the board. 3 14. The 5th Grade Classes at Beeson and Sunnyside Elementary Schools had their G.R.E.A.T. Graduations this week. The Gang Resistance Education And Training (G.R.E.A.T.) The program is an evidence-based, national and international gang and violence prevention program that has been building trust between law enforcement and communities for almost 30 years. It is taught annually by the Dodge City Police Department to all 5th graders in USD 443 and Sacred Heart. This year s G.R.E.A.T. instructor is Officer Ashley Moyer. 17 NEWS RELEASE January 10, 2019 For more information: Heather Lansdowne Dodge City Farmers Market Workshop Feb. 8 MANHATTAN, Kan. The Kansas Department of Agriculture, K-State Research and Extension and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment will host a regional workshop in Dodge City on Friday, Feb. 8, at the Ford County Fair Building. This is one of six regional workshops which are being held this winter to assist farmers market vendors and managers. Kansas farmers markets not only provide a fresh food source, but also stimulate the local economy. In 2018, 95 farmers markets were registered with KDA s Central Registration of Farmers Markets. Farmers markets provide growers a wonderful opportunity to have real interaction with consumers, and a chance to tell their farm s story, said Londa Nwadike, consumer food safety specialist with K-State Research and Extension and the University of Missouri. It s also important for farmers to understand certain legal, safety and financial parameters before choosing to sell at a farmers market. A keynote presentation will feature tips on marketing and making a profit, and a panel will provide information selling to institutions such as restaurants, groceries and schools. KDA s weights and measures program will also offer free scale certification for attendees. Workshop topics will include: Pest Control Methods, Cover Crops and Soil Health Regulations for Selling Meat, Eggs and Poultry SNAP Program and Sales Tax for Vendors Specialty Crops and Produce Safety Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program Training The workshop will be held at the Ford County Fair Building, 901 W. Park Street in Dodge City. Onsite registration will open at 8:30 a.m. and the workshops will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude by 3:00 p.m. Registration for this workshop is now open and is $20 per participant. Registration includes lunch; however, lunch will only be guaranteed to those participants who register by Jan. 31. Registration forms can be found at FromtheLandofKansas.com/FMWorkshop or at local extension offices. For more information, contact Lexi Wright, KDA s From the Land of Kansas marketing coordinator, at or Lexi.Wright@ks.gov. Workshops are also being held in Olathe, Parsons, Wichita, Manhattan and Hays. KDA is committed to providing an environment that enhances and encourages economic growth of the agriculture industry and the Kansas economy. The Kansas Ag Growth Strategy has identified training for small companies via workshops as a key growth outcome for the specialty crop sector, particularly in the western half of the state. The farmers market workshops will provide education through partnerships to help make Kansas farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses more successful. ###
