Hello Darkness My Old Friend, I ll Probably Fall Off the Deck Again... K aylin Dennis, proprietor of the Smoky Bar Store, the Camas Prairie s northernmost commercial/recreational outpost, dropped by the County Commission meeting last week to express her thanks for the heroic performance of Camas County s Road and Bridge crew. R&B battled water, rocks, snow, wind, weird vibes and avalanche debris to get the over-couch-summit access to our backcountry playground open for the Little Smoky/Big Smoky summer season! Do you seek Outer Peace, grasshopper? Enlightenment? BBQ? Make a pilgrimage to the Smoky Bar Store 24 miles north of Fairfield. The store plans to host a special In The Dark event on the store s deck on August 21, offering privileged seating for the deliriously anticipated Total Eclipse of the Sun. From the Smoky Bar Store facebook page: Smoky Bar Store is in the path of totality for the Great American Eclipse of August 21, 2017! Observers there will see (approximately) 1 minute 4 seconds of totality! JOIN us on the deck to observe this once in a lifetime event that is not easily viewed from areas out of the "path!" As the Moon's shadow crosses into Idaho over the Snake River, the eclipse will traverse over mountainous terrain. Idaho will be a desirable state to view the eclipse because of good weather prospects. BBQ on the deck! It's a total eclipse of the Bar! ;)

Hamburger dinner $6! Hot dog dinner $5! The Chamber will contribute all proceeds for festive explosives! ü July 4! Fairfield Fireworks! Gather in the City Park as dark approaches! Fairfield firefighters will ignite the sky and launch new stars into the Camas firmament. Look up! Totally free! ü July 7 & 8! Camas County Rodeo! A top-notch pro rodeo! ICA! IMPRA! Pro-West! More of these rodeo acronyms than I can understand! Drama! Thrills and spills! Great human and animal scenery! Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. at the rodeo arena in West Fairfield! Admission $8, and kids under 8 free! Stand back: Hometown Bull Riding, too! ü July 16! The 104 th Camas Pioneer Picnic! All are invited to the community potluck picnic in the Fairfield City Park beginning at noon! The first Pioneer Picnic was held in 1913 in Soldier! No. 104 will continue the edible history tradition with music, tables loaded with side dishes, desserts and salads brought by picnickers! The hümongous timeline display! Entrees (beef and chicken) will be provided by the Pioneer Picnic Association. Tall tales and socializing, among pioneers young and old, newcomers and oldtimers! ü August 4, 5 and 6! The Camas County Fair! 4-H kids showing livestock. Displays in the Legion Hall! A Community Picnic in the City Park! A hüge (sort of) parade that you get to see both sides of since it goes through town to the highway and back! So nice, you get to see it twice!!!!! Kids carnival in the park! Vendors and food booths! Music! Bull riding! Theme: Country Pride County Wide! ü August 21! The Great Eclipse! Totality of Eclipsitude will be achieved north of Fairfield and some less consequential places as well. Smoky Bar Store in Smoky Bar, 23 miles north of Fairfield at Smoky Bar, has a front-row VIP location for this astronomical event! See you in the dark, or perhaps not. The 104th Pioneer Picnic! All are Welcome! Vandalized Johnson Hill overlook sign goes in for repairs!!! T he vandal-damaged Welcome to the Camas Prairie sign has been temporarily removed by Bruce Whipple for restoration and refinishing after suffering a crazed hammer attack. The damaged sign is itself a replacement for the late George Carrico s famous overlook relief carving stolen years ago! Bruce Whipple and Bill Koller remove the sign for repairs. Photo by Kathy Whipple This project kicks off a locally funded project to install a jazzy new vandal-proof stainless-on-steel pictorial heritage map on the site, to welcome visitors and display historical info! Fundraising for the jazzy sign project is underway! A display sample of the new sign construction is available for viewing at Leah s hair salon on Main Street!
