1 Knox Gymnastics Club 4 Mossfield Ave Ferntree Gully Vic 3156 Ph: us: info@knoxgymnastics. org.au Web Site: Operations Manager: Rebecca Tilley Office Staff: Jo Salter Sam Lowe Stephanie Quittner Olivia Burton Our Mission To encourage our gymnastics community to reach their full potential in a caring and safe environment Our Vision To be a leading provider of quality gymnastics programs with a reputation of great sportsmanship and community spirit Our Values Respect, Inclusive, Community, Fun, Opportunity, Development, Safety Annual General Meeting! UP COMING EVENTS: Want to have a say about the direction of the Knox Gymnastics Club? Did you know Knox Gymnastics Club is an Incorporated Association, run by a Committee of Management made up of members? Did you know that you have an opportunity to participate in the way your Club is managed and its future direction? Do you have some ideas on how we could do things better? If you would like to have input please join us on: Tuesday 2 nd May at 7pm at the gym President: Cathy Haesler

2 Equipment Update We will be raising the level of the matting in the vault area (back of the gym) during the upcoming school holidays. We have moved the MAG high bars into the beam area in preparation for this as the ceiling is higher in this area. This means that the taller boys won t scrape their toes on the ceiling when doing giants! This will also allow us to put in a second vault, and allows for more floor space for warming up and conditioning. We will also be putting in a brand new vault strip. At the end of 2016, a brand new Spieth pommel was acquired, for a cost of $4225. Mention Knox Gymnastics Club at your point of purchase, and 5% of your sale comes back to the club. This helps us to purchase new equipment.

Pommel How has gymnastics helped you in other areas of your life? Gymnastics helped me with other sports whilst in high school, but it also taught me about discipline and determination, which has helped me in many other areas. 5 Gymnasts and their Coaches Gymnast Profile Name: Bailee Egan. Age: 6 Level: Recreational Level White How old were you when you started gymnastics? 6 years old, started first term this year What is your favourite apparatus? The floor and the pit What are your other Interests/ sports? Drawing What is your favourite TV show? Lazy Town, Grandpa in my pocket, Little Roy What is your favourite dinner? White things with stuff inside and chicken with gravy What do like best about your coach? Kim is a good teacher. Coach Profile Name: Kim Woon Age: 32 Why did you become a gym coach? I started gymnastics at the age of 7 at Knox when Ting was a junior boys coach and the floor was lime green, and took to it straight away. My competitive years lead to being selected for the VIS program and train towards potentially the 2000 Sydney Olympics (yes a while ago), however during my time there I chose to pursue other activities and ultimately retired from the sport. I have always had a love for gymnastics and after many years of getting back into it through adult gym (come and join the class adults!!!), I have been more and more intrigued how much it can assist in everyday life at any age. Coupling this with my fading youth I found coaching to be a fantastic avenue to continue loving the sport (if not more), and what better place to do it than at my old club. After every Saturday I look forward to the next class knowing that there will be smiles and hugs at the end of what will probably be a busy week for me, and also very fulfilling to give back to the sport that made me a happy kid and now an adult. What levels do you coach? Recreational Levels Red and White What s the highest level you have coached? Rec classes What is your favourite apparatus? Floor How has gymnastics helped you in other areas of your life? There are so many layers to this sport that can help 5 feed into your life, but the one thing that it has helped me with is to simply just try. There are many things we want to do in life but you won t do it unless you try it first - whether it be exploring a place you haven t been to before, a new skill you want to achieve, or climbing the bench to reach the top shelf, focus yourself and give it a go (FYI BBQ tongs help with the top shelf!). I have always had a strong tendency to lose focus (and yes still do) however keeping in mind what the end goal is, gymnastics has taught me to persevere and despite obstacles anything can be done. What do you like most about gymnastics? The feeling that you get from gymnastics is unusual and rare to any other sport or activity I have tried. I like the adrenaline that the sport can give to an individual and admire how superhuman people can be, all the while in a controlled and disciplined manner. I enjoy the social aspect too, meeting like-minded people who also enjoy the sport and find it very rewarding. Like all the physios I have met I m sure they find the sport very rewarding. What do you do in your spare time? Travelling, skiing, drums, wine and cheese!?!! What is your favourite T.V show? Mr Bean What do like most about your gymnast Bailee? Always happy Bailee is full of fun and a lot of fun to coach!!! Everything I ask of her to try in class she gives it a good go with a big smile of course. Nothing is too difficult and she is just full of beans which I love about her. I do also like that Bailee laughs at my jokes and find we are a little alike. I will pass on my BBQ tongs one day.

6 Kindergym Born to Move! We have had a very busy start to the year with our numbers growing every week! Our adventures so far have taken us to the beach (Summer Fun), learnt about our body and how we can move it around, explored BIG and little, and this week are off to the Zoo! We will finish the term off with a Teddy Bears Picnic with everyone getting a special treat! Our aim is to provide a positive learning experience for both parent and child, offering meaningful activities to develop gymnastic skills. We do this by encouraging group time and offering much assistance during our guided discovery. This term we have welcomed to the Kindergym team, Mickey and Renee. We have put to good use some new equipment purchased. Our new tunnel and restored cargo net and the kids are loving it! We look forward to a wonderful year ahead full of many achievements! HAVING FUN LEARNING BEING STRONG TAKING TURNS

8 Chinese national gymnastics team prepares for 2017 World Cup at Knox Gymnastics David Turner, Knox Leader Centre February 21, :00pm COACHES, parents and a few lucky young gymnasts had the opportunity of a lifetime when the Chinese national gymnastics team made a flying visit to the Knox Gymnastics Centre in Ferntree Gully on February 20, The Chinese men s and women s teams are in Melbourne for the World Cup event at Hisense Arena this week and needed an international quality venue for an impromptu training session. The Knox centre, after a $250,000 revamp over the past year, was just the ticket. Knox head coach Qinghua Yang, himself a former international coach, had contacts within the Chinese team and was quick to answer the call from his former colleagues. Operations manager at the Knox Gymnastics Club, Rebecca Tilley, said the visit had been an outstanding success. They were very happy with the venue, she said. We have a new sprung floor, a quality sprung floor, new sets of bars and a new pommel horse. That allows our gymnasts to train on what they are going to be competing on at major competitions. Ms Tilley said, despite having about an hour to get organised before the Chinese team bus rolled into the car park, it had been an invaluable experience for the club. Some parents pulled their children out of school for the afternoon to watch and it was a great educational experience for our coaches. The boys did pommels and parallel bars and a bit of tumbling. The girls did everything, full floor routines, tumbling. A full three-hour session.
