NCDC invites you to enter or just visit its 51 st annual daylily show and sale on Saturday, July 1 st at Brookside Gardens Visitors Center, 1800 Glenallan Ave., Wheaton, MD Doors open at 7:30 a.m. for those entering daylilies or helping with the show. The show will be open to the public from 1:30 to 3 p.m. This is our first Saturday daylily show in a very long time. We encourage you to enter scapes, single blooms, or both. It is fun and exciting. This is NCDC s way of showing the public our best daylilies and offers a great way to compare similar flowers side-by-side! All winning entries receive ribbons and the best entries are awarded trophies to display for a year. The top winners in each section receive checks for $25! All you need are your flowers, show tags, and a copy of the NCDC 2017 Cultivar Classification List. Class numbers for each cultivar are on this list. Simply put that number on your show tag for each daylily you enter. We have incorporated the AHS list of Doubles and Polymerous, Spiders, and Unusual Forms into our list of show tag numbers. You may download the list as a PDF from the NCDC web site or contact the show chairs for a copy. Please visit ncdcwebsite.com for show information and a copy of the 2017 Cultivar Classification List. These lists will also be available in the exhibit grooming area on the day of the show, where you may prep your daylilies before entering them. Please scope out your gardens a few days ahead of time to see what you might enter. We will have a buffet lunch for our invited judges as well as the folks who enter or help with the show. 3 President s Message I love this time of year. The anticipation of what the garden will look like in the next six weeks. Every day new scapes are popping out of their fans and growing like weeds. I try to remember what they looked like last year, or if they are new to the garden, my excitement is wild about what will be. All of it makes me smile and grateful for this hobby, my collection of daylilies and my daylily friends. I am not without my challenges in the garden, but I know I can get through them and that I and my neighbors will thoroughly enjoy the garden this year. My new life experience and biggest challenge this year is the family of groundhogs that are residing under my shed in the back yard rent free. I hate to evict a family of at least mom and two kids, but they have to go! And I am still digging beds and trying to get all of the daylilies into the ground. I make more progress every week. I have to acknowledge the help of my friends in getting the garden into better shape each year. From plant material to name tags to instructions in how to care for something new, to inspiration to go for the garden of my dreams; I couldn t do it without them. I look forward to being on the open garden circuit again in a year or two and welcoming everyone to my little piece of heaven. I am looking forward to the coming weeks, the National Convention, the flower shows, the summer sale and auction, the picnic and all those new daylilies that will come to me this summer. I m looking forward to seeing everyone at these events! --Carol Multiscape Awards???? What the heck are they? We offer two awards for outstanding entries of three scapes: one for seedlings and one for registered cultivars. But, we don t see many entries. The AHS Achievement Medal is awarded for 3 scapes of the same seedling achieving an average score of 90 points or greater in Section 11. More than one Medal may be awarded. The NCDC Registered Multiscape Award recognizes the best blue ribbon entry in Section 13 for an entry of either three scapes of the SAME cultivar (section 1300A) or three scapes from three DIFFERENT cultivars (1300B). For an entry to win a blue ribbon in either 1300A or 1300B, the average of all scapes together must score 90 or greater. (This is a local award and no scape entered in Section 13 is eligible to compete for an AHS Rosette.) Got a nice clump in your garden that puts out way too many scapes? Or maybe you only have three scapes from three different daylilies, but they all look just fine. Consider entering. Spring Luncheon: A Terrific Start to 2017 The Spring Luncheon on March 25 at Maggiano s Restaurant in Virginia was a great success. Our speaker, Sandy Holmes, made a very informative presentation about her hybridizing program and brought about 28 cultivars for auction. Attendance was up and we even had two couples from the Free State Daylily Society in attendance and Margo Reed came all the way from Charlottesville, VA to attend. The food was delicious thanks to the efforts of Kathy Schloeder (with selection input from our members as she reminded me) and her efforts to ensure the facility are greatly appreciated. 4 National Capital Daylily Club s Daylily Show General Information (also on web at ncdcwebsite.com) The 51 st Annual NCDC Daylily Show will be held on Saturday, July 1 st at Brookside Gardens. The show will open to the public at 1:30 p.m. The show closes at 3:00 p.m. this year. Note: This is the first Saturday show that we have had in a very long time. 1. Competition in the Daylily Show is open to all. Exhibits are to be brought to Brookside Gardens Visitors Center, 1800 Glenallen Ave., Wheaton, MD (Mapquest link = 2. COME EARLY! Doors open at 7:30 am (you don t have to be there at 7:30). Off-scape entries (blooms) must be given to the Placement Committee by 10 a.m. All other entries by 10:30, NONE LATER. 3. All daylilies must be grown, groomed, and entered by the exhibitor, except in the Educational Division. Artificial coloring is prohibited for grooming entries. Exhibitors are solely responsible for the accuracy of their entry tags. 4. Youths may enter all sections. YOUTH Section is open to youngsters up to and including those who turn 18 in The flower size, form, and color of a registered cultivar are determined by the registration data for that cultivar as published in the AHS Check List ( Size classifications which apply are: Extra Large Flower - 7" or more in diameter Large Flower /2" or more, but less than 7" in diameter Small Flower - 3" or more, but less than 4 1 /2" in diameter Miniature Flower - less than 3" in diameter 6. Spiders and Unusual Form cultivars must be registered as such and be on the AHS approved list to be entered in those Sections (6 or 7). Cultivars not on the list must be entered according to their registered size (in Sections 1, 2, 3, or 4). Polymerous and Multiform daylilies are to be entered in Section 5 with Doubles. A Polymerous daylily is a daylily having more than the normal three sepals (usually four or five) in the outer whorl and more than three petals (usually the same number as sepals) in the inner whorl. Unless they are registered as polymerous (or as doubles), daylilies with extra flower parts should not be entered. Daylilies registered as polymerous are now placed in Section 5 with the Doubles. Multiform Classification Code - Cultivars registered as multiform Double or Polymerous (e.g. Double/Unusual Form, Double/Spider, Spider/Unusual Form/Polymerous) are placed in Section 5 with the Doubles. The Double (or Polymerous) form supersedes any other form. But, for a Spider/Unusual Form, the Spider supersedes the UF and is entered in Section Each registered cultivar constitutes a name class. 8. Exhibitors may make more than one entry in each Section, provided entries are of different cultivars. Exhibitors are encouraged to enter all Sections. 9. Scapes must not exceed 30" except for Seedlings. (A registered cultivar may exceed 30" provided it is displayed with the lowest branch at the top of the display container.) 10. Cut all Seedling scapes as close as possible to the base. Write only the word SEEDLING in the Cultivar: name line on the entry tag. Names, numbers, or identifying marks must not be visible to the judges. A seedling that has won an AHS Rosette in any other show is not eligible. NCDC Newsletter Page 4 June 2017

5 11. Standard containers for horticulture entries and show entry tags will be provided by the Staging Committee. Other containers may not be used. 12. Neither the NCDC, Inc. nor Brookside Gardens will be responsible for loss or damage, but will exercise caution to protect exhibits. 13. All entries must be removed from 3:00 to 3:10 p.m. on July 1, Unclaimed flowers will be destroyed. Tags and awards will be removed and returned by the Show Committee. 14. Only AHS members may win AHS Rosettes and Medals, but winners may join at the show to qualify. 15. If you want to retrieve any of your entries, you must do so at 3:00 p.m. Those not retrieved will be destroyed during cleanup. 16. Awards will be collected and distributed at the Fall Picnic on September 9. All members are encouraged to participate in the daylily show in some way bring scapes or blooms, be a judges aide, help with placement, help with the refreshments, or help on Friday, June 30 from 10:00 until noon to setup the event. NO experience is required! Please come out and lend your support. You ll have fun getting to know some of your fellow members better and making new friends. This award can be won only by first or second time participants. The more experienced members are not even eligible to win. So, don t be intimidated. The beginner that wins the most blue ribbons (onscape or single blooms) will take the trophy home. There were no winners for the Beginner s Luck trophy in 2011 or in 2012 because no new exhibitors entered. So, there was no one to take home Jan and Greg s trophy. It spent two years languishing in the storage locker with on one to love it. It only takes one blue ribbon (either on-scape or single bloom) to qualify. So, if you are new to showing daylilies, consider bringing a few nice blooms or scapes and entering them in the show. You may be the one to take home the trophy this year. 6 Show Tips - How to Prepare Your Daylilies NCDC has the last Color Show in the AHS where daylilies are arranged by size and color. To facilitate arranging the daylilies, use a copy of the new 2017 Cultivar Classification List and the Show Schedule Chart on page 11 to find cultivar numbers and place them on your show tags. Lists will be available at the show and on our website at ncdcwebsite.com. It is best to prepare your tags ahead of time or the night before since there may not be time to prepare entry tags, groom your scapes, and submit entries before the closing time. The Cultivar Classification List is your primary source for classification. It includes numbers for cultivars entered at previous NCDC flower shows. If you have a daylily that is not on this list, we also have instructions to guide you to do your own classification. See the Do It Yourself Guide to Classification on page 10. Classification numbers for Unusual Form (UF), Spider, Double, or Polymerous also are listed in the Show Schedule Classification Chart. Doubles, Multiform, and Polymerous were combined into the same section as Double. AHS has lists of all the Doubles, Multiforms, Polys, Spiders, and UFs on their daylily database web site at If it isn t on their lists, it goes in another section. If a daylily has extra flower parts, but is not registered as a double or polymerous, do not enter it. Pay particular attention to the difference between Large (4 1/2" or more, but less than 7" in diameter) and Extra Large (7" or more in diameter) daylilies, because it is easy to enter them in the wrong section. Check the American Hemerocallis Society (AHS) Check List or their registration on the web to be sure if you don t see them on our List. If you need help classifying a cultivar that is not on this list, please consult the Classification Desk at the show. The Classification Committee will assist in determining classification numbers of registered cultivars, but will not fill out show tags, nor will they have much time to identify unknown cultivars. Unlisted daylilies should be brought to the Classification Desk no later than 15 minutes before the closing time for entries to ensure classification in time for placement. blooms must be handed in by 10 a.m. Scapes must be handed in by 10:30 a.m. The show will be open to the public from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Admission is free. Invite your family and friends. All exhibits must be removed at 3:00, the day of the show, but not before. We encourage all members to help dismantle the show. Tips Here are some things you can do to prepare for the show and improve your chances to win ribbons. Read the Show Schedule, Cultivar Classification List, and Instructions in advance. Select your best scapes and blooms. A scape with multiple blooms is desirable but it will be judged on its weakest bloom so remove any flowers that are less than perfect. This is a common mistake that could cost you a purple ribbon or better! Make sure that your flower has all its flower parts (six stamens, three sepals, three petals, etc.). You may turn in flowers ungroomed. However, to show your flowers at their best, groom your daylilies before you submit them in to the placement committee. Careful grooming is not difficult, but it takes time. The object is to make the flower and scape look fresh and clean. Remove seedpods, damaged buds and blooms. Trim brown bud scars and brown parts from bracts or leaves; lightly scrape brown areas on the scape to make it look fresh and green. Shape the groomed leaves or bracts to natural looking points. Do not remove proliferations. Take care not to over-groom bud scars judges look for scapes with evidence of a high bud count. Remove dirt, insects, and any pollen that has fallen on the bloom. Useful tools are razor blades, exacto knives, small cuticle scissors. Dry make-up brushes, and Q-tips are good for removing pollen. Judges take off points for poorly groomed entries. Show Details Doors open to entrants at 7:30 a.m. The entry preparation locations will be the Adult Classroom and Atrium of the Brookside Gardens Visitors Center. 7 Except for seedlings, which must be severed as close as possible to the base, cut your scape to a pleasing height in proportion to the size of the flower and no taller than 30" (taller is permitted if the lowest branch is at the top of the vase). Try cutting some scapes (but not single blooms) the night before the show. Select the ones you are sure will bloom the next day. Put them in a bucket of water inside your house or garage to prevent insect or rain damage. Cut single blooms the morning of the show. There are various methods of transporting scapes to the show. To keep scapes from twisting and bumping each other you could make a masking tape grid on top of a 5 gallon bucket or styrofoam cooler, put scapes in individual beer or soda bottles, or use rolled up newspapers in a bucket between the scapes. Transport individual blooms in water picks on a piece of Styrofoam. Drive carefully! To learn how the judges select winners, you can attend a judges training course or volunteer to be a Judge s Aide. Why not encourage them to enter the Daylily Show in Section 9. (All daylilies must be grown, groomed, and entered by the exhibitor.) This is a section for all kids 18 and under. No adults allowed! If you don t know how to prepare them for the show, just ask someone to give you some help when you bring them to the show. Daylily Show and Sale continued from page 1. We will also offer daylilies for sale to the public before the show opens until sold out. This is a big hit while waiting for the show to open and after seeing all the gorgeous flowers. Finally, we will need your help dismantling the Show at 3 p.m. We have a lot of fun before, during and after the show! The following classes will be offered: Class 1: five different registered cultivars; Class 2: five different seedlings. AHS ACHIEVEMENT MEDAL will be awarded to the originator of the seedling or pre-registered cultivar(s) for each collection scoring an average of 90 points or more in Section 11. Each of the judges on this panel will point score each scape individually without conference. AHS AWARD OF APPRECIATION for Educational Division entries may be awarded by the Show Chair for educational displays, exhibits, lectures, or demonstrations. NCDC Local Awards These six trophies or awards are given by the National Capital Daylily Club, Inc. Trophies are engraved with the names of each year s winners. They will be presented to the 2016 winners to display for one year. THE GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY AWARD for the best scape entered of a cultivar registered by any NCDC member (past, present or deceased). You will need to determine which of your entries qualify and mark your entry tag with an asterisk. (A hybridizer list will be available in the preparation area.) THE JAN AND GREG THOMPSON BEGINNER S LUCK TROPHY for the exhibitor entering the NCDC flower show for the first or second time who wins the most blue ribbons for on- and off-scape entries. THE REGISTERED MULTISCAPE AWARD for the best entry in Section 12. For an entry to win a blue ribbon in either 1200A or 1200B, the average of all scapes together must score 90 or above. No scape entered in Section 12 is eligible to compete for an AHS Rosette. THE PAT COCHENOUR POLYTEPAL AWARD for the best Polytepal entry in Division 1, Section 5. THE BEST OFF-SCAPE AWARD for the best off-scape entry in Division II, Sections 1-7. THE OFF-SCAPE SWEEPSTAKES AWARD to the winner of the most blue ribbon off-scape awards. In the case of a tie, the exhibitor with the most purple ribbons is declared winner. If there is still a tie, red, then yellow awards are counted as tie breakers. NCDC Newsletter Page 8 June 2017

9 How To Fill-Out Show Entry Tags Every entry must have an official AHS show entry tag. Much of the data can be filled out in advance, such as name, address (in two places), cultivar name, and the classification number. It is best to do this in advance so that on the day of the show you can spend more time on grooming than on filling out tags. Tag information should be printed clearly using pencil, or indelible blue or black ink. A small, pre-printed label or stamp may be used for the exhibitor s name and address. The field for AHS member should be filled out. A field should be left blank if it does not apply. Fill out each entry tag according to the diagram below. Divisions to use: Horticulture Division I - Scapes Horticulture Division II - Single Blooms (off-scape) Leave the fields Section and Group empty. In the Class field, enter the NCDC Classification number for the cultivar. Enter the registered name of the daylily in Cultivar or the word Seedling for your unregistered or pre-registered daylilies. Do not add a seedling number. The NCDC Classification List with the numbers for previously entered cultivars soon wil1be available at ncdcwebsite.com. Copies also will be available at the show. If the daylily is not on the list, use the Do It Yourself Classification Guide on page 10 and verify the flower size on the AHS website at Or at the show, the Classification Committee will be available to help you. 10 NCDC Daylily Show Do It Yourself Guide to Classification Daylily Show entries are organized by size, form and color. To determine what number to put on your entry tag, first check the NCDC Classification List, which assigns numbers to most locally grown cultivars as well as all registered cultivars currently listed by AHS as spiders, unusual forms, polymerous (formerly called polytepal) or multiform flowers. The classification list will be on the NCDC web site (ncdcwebsite.com). If the registered daylily you wish to enter is not on the list, you will need to know its color, whether it has a color pattern, and its registered size to determine what number to put on your entry tag. Simply looking at the daylily may tell you all you need to know. Official AHS registration information is published in the AHS Hemerocallis Check List and is now available on-line in the AHS Daylily Database at You will also find links to lists of doubles, polymerous flowers, spiders, unusual forms and multiforms at the bottom of the AHS database web page. You may want to survey your garden a few days before the show to see if you have any cultivars you might want to enter that are not on the NCDC Classification List. Determining the Class number in advance will save time on the day of the show. Take extra care to distinguish between Large and Extra Large Flowers since they are easy to confuse. NCDC Flower Show Class numbers are composed of a 1 to 3 digit number followed by a letter. Each digit or letter has a prescribed meaning. E.g., 134P would mean a single bloom (1) of a red (3) mini (4) with a pattern (P). Leading zeros are omitted. E.g., a scape of a near white self (solid colored), extra large daylily would be 1S. As shown in the classification chart, Class numbers for Double/Polymerous/Multiform (5A or 105A), Spider (6A or 106A), and Unusual Form (7A or 107A) are not broken down by color or pattern. The AHS Hemerocallis Check List and the AHS Daylily Database Online provide conclusive information on registration, flower size and whether a cultivar is a double, polymerous, multiform, unusual form or spider. They may be less definitive in other areas. If a daylily has an obvious eye or edge, classify it as patterned, even if the AHS sources do not mention an eye or edge. Color descriptions can often be confusing. A daylily described as rose may be pink or red or even orange. Beige might be dull pink, light brown, or near white. In such cases, your own eye and color sense are probably your most reliable guides. If you aren t sure which classification number to use for your daylily, check with the Classification Desk at the show. Use the following guide and look at the Daylily Show Schedule chart on page 11 to determine the Class number for daylily cultivars that are not included on the NCDC Classification List: 100 s Place Digits none = On-scape (Division I) 100 = Blooms (Division II) Ten s Place Digits (Colors are based on the background color, rather than the eye or pattern color.) none or 0 = White to Cream (or any color for a double/ polymerous/ multiform, spider, or unusual form.) 10 = Yellow to Gold 20 = Orange to Brown 30 = Red 40 = Blend or Polychrome 50 = Pink 60 = Purple or Lavender 70 = Bicolor or Bitone Last digit 1 = Extra Large (7" or more) 2 = Large (4½" or more, but under 7") 3 = Small (3" or more, but under 4½") 4 = Mini (Under 3") 5 = Double, Polymerous or Multiform* (must be registered as double, polymerous, or multiform) 6 = Spider* (All registered Spiders are on the NCDC Classification List.) 7 = Unusual Form* (must be registered as an Unusual Form) (All registered Unusual Forms are on the NCDC Classification List.) Alpha character P = Patterned (bordered, banded, edged, picoteed, eyed, haloed, or watermarked) S = Self A = All (i.e., either self or patterned.) (Used only for double/ polymerous/multiform, spiders, and unusual forms.) *Daylilies registered as having more than one form (e.g. both spider and unusual form) are called multiform daylilies and are placed in Section 5, Double/Polymerous/ Multiform.
