1 Long Island Dahlia Society Rules for Dahlia Show Entries 1. Latest classification list of the American Dahlia Society is to be used, with exhibits entered accordingly, not classified entries to be entered as they appear. 2. Show is open to all exhibitors. No entry fee to be charged, exhibitors must sign register book. 3. Suitable containers supplied for all classes. 4. There will be no restrictions as to the number of blooms entered from one garden in any class, except for the Show Flower. 5. In 2016 the Show Flower is Pam Howden, there is a limit of one (1) entry per person 6. Entries must be correctly labeled with cultivar name. Incorrectly named entries will be disqualified. 7. Unnamed seedlings must have growers ID. Past trophy winning seedlings cannot be entered in the future as a seedling. 8. Exhibitor s name must be concealed, all entries remained sealed until Tri-Color and further awards are chosen. Failure to observe this rule will disqualify entry. 9. All entries to be grown by exhibitor. 10. No other flowers permitted, all materials used to support stems must be removed before judging, or entry will be disqualified. Two sets of leaves are preferred on all entries, excluding Pompons and AOTs, which require a single set of leaves. 11. Judging begins promptly at 11:00 A.M.; all entries must be in place at that time. 12. Only judges, clerks, and committee people are permitted on the floor during judging. 1

2 13. First, second and third awards will be made in each class (except seedlings). No award will be made in any class if entry is unworthy. Tri-colors are awarded as noted in the schedule. Judges should check length of the stems especially in close or tri-color decisions. 14. The best entries in the nine classes of Other Type dahlias in both 1 and 3 bloom sections will receive Tri-Color ribbons and awards. 15. The decision of the judges will be final. No appeals will be considered except in cases where the entry is in the wrong class. In this case the Show Committee may consider the appeal and act as they see fit. 16. We shall not be held responsible for loss or damage to exhibits or personal property, but will exercise the utmost care to protect exhibits. Baskets and vases should be labeled with the exhibitor s name and address for proper return. 17. The Show Committee reserves the right to make additional rules, classes, or to change the schedule as it becomes necessary, or to remove from the tables before or after judging any exhibit it considers in poor condition. 18. All entries except exhibitor s baskets become the property of the Show Committee, to be disposed of at their own discretion at the close of the show. 19. Dahlia foliage is preferred in both baskets and vase classes. Other foliage is permitted but should not overpower the dahlias. Judges may not participate in decisions involving their own interests or entries. In the event a substitute judge is required, that judge must sign the appropriate sheet No exhibit shall be removed from the hall without the Show Committee s consent 2

3 Court of Honor The dahlias judged the winners and best blooms of the show are moved to the Court of Honor. On this table you will see the top dahlias and the ribbons they won. Dahlias are judged in a variety of categories, from single blooms to basket displays. Only one (1) show flower entry per person. Award Largest Bloom in the Show Best Novice A novice is a winner of less then three (3) tri-color awards at LIDS Shows Additional Awards Description Must be of exhibition quality, diameter plus width. Novice categories: Large AA, A, or B Medium BB, Ball, Waterlilly, Stellar, NO, NX Small Miniature, Mini-Ball, Pompom, and AOT 2016 Best New Introductions Large (1AA, 1A, 1B) Small (all other sizes / forms) Old Timers Award Any dahlia introduction at least 50 years old Best Undisseminated Seedling No ADA Classification One choice from each form: 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd year - Best fully double dahlia 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd year - Best open centered dahlia ADS Seedling Bench Open to all Exhibitors must read and adhere to the rules on the entries and judging as printed in the ADS Classification Handbook of Dahlias 5
