3 Notes for the diary Sunday 19th June 2016 at Cowra Bowling & Recreation Club Association meeting at 1pm followed by a presentation by Yvonne Tracey on an Orchid display in Singapore. As usual, members will meet for lunch at 12 at the club. Saturday 10th September 2016 Blayney A & P Association Spring Flower Show from 1- pm at the Anglican Hall, 88 Adelaide Street, Blayney. Inquiries to Joan Stonestreet - Ph Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th September 2016 Horticultural Society of Canberra Spring Bulb & Camellia Show from Noon 5pm on Saturday; 11.30am-4pm on Sunday at Lancaster Hall, Wesley Centre, National Circuit, Forrest, ACT. Inquiries to Show Secretary Sheila Hodgson Ph Saturday 24th September 2016 Orange & District Horticultural Society Daffodil & Spring Flower Show from 1-5pm at St. Barnabas Hall, corner of McLachlan and Dora Streets, Orange. Inquiries to Show Secretary Yvonne Tracey Ph Season Review Rob Slarke 2015 has been quite successful with a higher and more consistent standard of entries over the three shows Blayney, Canberra and Orange. The colder winter this year appears to have affected flowering with varieties that were in flower for Blayney last year, not ready until Canberra this year, and some that were ready for Canberra last year, not ready until Orange this year. The exception was cyclamineus Rapture (6Y-Y), the only flower of which was poor and flowered early. As is customary at this time of year, I have been reviewing my stock and noted a number of non-performing varieties that will be culled. The better varieties of previous years, including trumpets Newcrest (1W-Y) and Bravoure (1W-Y), large cups Lady Diana (2W-W) and Cowboy (2Y-O), small cups Dateline (3Y-O) and Surfer Girl (3W-W), and doubles Kiwi Solstice (4YO) and Crackington (4Y-Y) were supplemented with new Tony Davis releases trumpet Kevin 07 (1W-W) and a delicate large cup Seedling 9/14 (2W-P). Always on the lookout for new stock, the following showed up on my radar for future acquisition large cup Highland Mist (2W-W), large cup Sizzle (2Y-O), triandrus Sun Tiger (5Y-Y), poeticus Seedling 28/15 (9W-GYO) and a neat split corona seedling from Lawrence Trevanion (11W-Y). Four others that stood out and have been put on the immediate acquisition list are large cup Seedling 22/08 (2Y-Y), and the early flowering large cup Seedling 31/10 (2Y-O), large cup Miss Noelene (2W-W) and small cup Hanrahan (3W-YO).
4 2015 Season. From John Woodfield A late start to the season was hardly noticeable with good flowers right through to Orange with a great number of different exhibitors being successful at all shows. One should have made notes at all shows rather than trusting a fading memory some weeks later. One of the things that stands out as we think about the high standard at all shows is the success local breeders in the area are having improving standards of many divisions. By sharing some of their exploits and knowledge with the rest of us the improvement of all our entries has made for competition must closer in all shows. Many thanks to all of those breeders and we hope many more introductions will be available as time goes by to tempt us. The season what was the best flower? In our garden and I think maybe at all shows was 25/08 2 Y Y shown at Canberra picked up off the sales table in March after everyone had gone broke. Other flowers consistently appearing Highland Mist, Burradoo Magic, Burradoo Road, Sizzle, Hanrahan (wish the corona didn t separate), Miss Rhiannon ( why can we all get this so different every time). A number of other Davis introductions look more than promising with 13/09 1 y y a big improvement I think we scored a sibling off the plant stall hope we can isolate it for next season. 22/08 2 Y O took pride of place at Orange. Also of interest is the range of split coronas that I am having trouble separating the best maybe at this stage 35/08 and 11/07. How do we sort the range of division 9 maybe again 28/15 and 29/15 not forgetting the attractive 25/14 with the red stripes through it maybe a decorative, love to see a vase of it in the three containers in collections at the Canberra Show. How can we miss Sun Tiger 5 Y Y lovely and maybe the one I would really like to get my hands on to add to the 5 t0 13 list. Fencourt Jewel still appeals to judges and the public while I felt Nicholodeon has much better form. Division 7 were missing a number of cultivars early in the season and only in Orange did we see a couple different and reasonable flowers in Indian Maid 7 Y Y and Regeneration 7 Y W and I loved Rob Slarke s Dateline 3 Y Y O at Orange with a bit of size and good clean form. Thanks to all for all the hard work putting on these shows, so we can all show off our treasures Season from Tony Davis A simple request list the ten best daffodils for the season. This is a very difficult task for me as it is a big choice between those with 20 or so bulbs for a cultivar and in some cases the very first flower of a new seedling e.g. 5/15 a very nice 4y-o which was shown at Leongatha. In fairness to other growers I have chosen from those you may already have or are likely to be available in the next year or two. The list is in no particular order.
5 Highland mist, Miss Noeline and Burradoo Magic Largely not shown this year due to heavy rain but of excellent quality before that event. Burradoo Road again produced top quality blooms and many could have been picked. Hanrahan consistently good. Held up well in the sun Mogo champion division 3 at Leongatha. One of the many from the Go Wo x Miss Maureen clan. Very consistent. 6/09 a nice 2w-w will be named this year. We took a bucketful to the national show. 35/08 An all yellow split of very smooth form. We even showed this one in the open seedling championship class. Could be some available this year. Mr Les This one still sets the scene for the top class. Very big and showy and every bloom was good. Miss Sally Another we show every year and a must for serious exhibitors Gentleman Jim and Bundanoon both of these were very good but they always develop better when grown in the ground 60/10 A late 2wy of excellent form. Bright colour and good size. Should be available soon. 31/10 some outstanding 2yo flowers from this one. Better colour and form than Banker 22/08 this is a failed split but I will take it every time. For what it is worth I grew some Keira Bulb miniatures this year. They were all unnamed but of excellent quality. The named ones must be out of this world. Make a bid! From our friends in Victoria we have received some bulbs from Graeme Brumley. They are varieties he has bred. Photos are on daffseek for most of them. There is one bag of each available with between 1 and 3 bulbs. Make an offer highest bid received before 30 March will be the winner! Send your bids to graemecdavis@hotmail.com or 89 Wakefield Gardens Ainslie ACT 2602 Eumeralla 3w-yyo this was champion daffodil Kyneton 2014 Nariel 2w-p Narracan 1y-y Campaspe 1w-p Warrambine 2w-p
6 Select Bulbs from Tony Davis The varieties below are available in limited numbers. All orders must be received by Graeme and Sharon Davis before March 30. New Release Go Mo 3w-yo Sibling to MOGO. This is slightly later to flower and, if anything, slightly larger. An excellent addition to a high quality classification $25 Mogo 3w-yo Champion 3 in Leongatha at the national championships. Excellent flower that is consistently good. Only a couple available (see photo) $35 Jumbuck 1y-o this borderline trumpet was champion div 1 at Canberra Excellent colour and worth space in any garden. We also showed this in 2015 at both Blayney and Leongatha. (see photo) $30 Objective 31/10 2y-o Grand Champion Blayney A big consistent flower that is a strong grower. (see photo) $35 Grateful 22/08 2y-y excellent consistent flower that grows strongly. We used this is both championships in Leongatha. (see photo) $30 Spalpeen 35/08 11y-y Champion split at Leongatha. Very smooth and very consistent. Worth a place in any exhibitors garden. (see photo) $30 Bong Bong 6/09 2w-w High quality white - grows and multiplies well without effort $25 Mannerism 9/14 2w-wwp this is one of those flowers that makes you look twice. On first look it is a high quality white large cup. Then you realise it has a soft pink rim to the cup. (see photo) $35 Previously named varieties Miss Di 2w-w High quality all white in an increasingly crowded class. $30 Burradoo Magic 2w-w One of our best white large cups very hard to beat. $30 Highland Mist 2w-w Strong growing all white with plenty of size and quality. Almost a trumpet but not quite. $30 Hanrahan 3w-yo a most consistent small cup that is large, well-formed and stands up to the sun very well no problem with burnt cups. Anyone trying to breed sunproof red cups should be adding this to their breeding program. $30 Miss Noeline 2w-w another high quality white large cup. Excellent flower which can glisten at its best. $30
