Last year s show was a resounding success and we hope to exceed last year s performance. Please visit for further details. Open to all comers, membership of the Society is not a requirement and all are encouraged to enter any of the Classes detailed in this booklet. However, should you wish to join our Society and enjoy the benefits, do not hesitate to ask we should be pleased to welcome you. Once again, we are welcoming visitors to the sympathetically restored Court House, which includes all the modern services we have come to expect, plus the delightful adjoining walled Pageant Garden, situated in the centre of Historic Warwick, close to the Castle (CV34 4EW). This prestigious medal is named after Joseph Banks a founder of the RHS. He also sailed with Captain James Cook on HMS Endeavour. 7

11 RULES & GUIDANCE SECTION a. Exhibits may be staged from 9.30am until 2pm on the Saturday immediately prior to the Show s Opening Bank Holiday Sunday. Judging will commence 2.30pm Bank Holiday Saturday, promptly. b. The Show will be open to the public from 10am Bank Holiday Sunday. c. Early entries notification would be appreciated. Entry applications will not be accepted after 6pm Wednesday immediately prior to the Show. d. Entries must be sent to: Helen Pearson (see page 3). Class numbers must be clearly marked on all entries submitted. e. Exhibitors entries should match those stated on their entry form or risk disqualification. f. Exhibitor s objections are to be lodged with the Official or Show Official by 4.30pm Saturday accompanied by 1 deposit, returnable if the objection is upheld. g. If insufficient entries are received in any one Class, the associated awards will be at The Show Judges discretion. h. Show competitors must have grown their exhibits. This is subject to verification by the Committee. Exceptions are classes 1-5a, 50-55, & which must have been constructed by the competitor. i. Exhibitors are restricted to one points award in each Class. j. The Show closes to the public 4pm August Bank Holiday Monday, competitor s exhibits are not to be removed before 4:15pm. k. WHAS and its Committee will not accept liability for loss or damage to personal belongings. l. WHAS means Warwick Horticultural & Allotment Society. m. Contingencies not covered in this booklet are to be referred to WHAS for consideration however their decision/ruling is final. n. All trophies must be signed for immediately after presentation and returned to WHAS on or before July the following year. o. Prize monies not claimed by the close on Bank Holiday Monday will be regarded as a donation to WHAS. 11

12 TOP TRAY (Class 44) 1. Top Tray Class is for a display comprising of any three types of vegetables taken from the following list of eight along with their respective quantities in the following brackets: Carrots (3) Cauliflower (2) Onions (3) Parsnips (3) Peas (6 pods) Potatoes (3) Runner Beans (6) and Tomatoes (6). 2. Each type of vegetable will be judged out of a total of 20 points, split into three sections: 7 points for size, shape & colour. 7 points for condition & 6 points for uniformity. Therefore, overall marks out of All vegetables are to be displayed for effect. Vegetables displayed within an area not exceeding 18 x 24 without bending any parts. No parts of the exhibit may exceed the size of the tray. A tray or board may be used provided it does not exceed the size area limits. If a tray or board being used has a raised edge the internal dimension is used to measure the size. Black cloth is permitted and the tray may be painted. Parsley is allowed for garnishing but no other foliage. Accessories such as plates, sand & rings etc. will be allowed. Onion tops may be tied or whipped using raffia or string. NOTES FOR EXHIBITORS & JUDGES Carrots & parsnips must have their foliage trimmed back to 3, Peas & Beans must be displayed with some stalk attached. Tomatoes must be displayed with calyces (the green flowers bed case). Judges may handle exhibits, open pods etc. to check quality. The tray/board or staging must not be cut or mutilated in any way e.g. cutting holes to hold onions. Judges can use their discretionary powers when marking exhibits from the inexperienced. Points awarded are to be clearly marked by judges on the exhibitor s card. Queries arising not covered in the forgoing should be passed promptly to the Show Officials for their decision. Failure to comply will result in disqualification. 12

13 TOP VASE (Class 21) a. The Top Vase is for a vase of mixed flowers containing a total of between 5 & 10 stems, taken from a minimum of two different varieties of plants. b. The display will be judged from a total of 35 points, 25, maximum for: colour, form, condition, quality & freshness plus a possible 10 points awarded for overall presentation & effect. To be viewed at 360. c. Stems used in the display must be showing flowers only. Seed heads, berries etc. are not allowed. Foliage which is growing naturally, is attached to and forms part of the flowering stem is allowed. d. The vase may be any shape or size & made of any material but must be proportionate to the display. No marks are awarded for the vase. e. Accessories such as bows or additional foliage are not allowed. Florist s foam, packing etc. to support the stems are allowed. NOTES FOR EXHIBITORS & JUDGES Flowering stems can be taken from ANY flowering plant. Different kinds of plants need to be taken from different genera e.g. pinks, carnations & sweet Williams which are all dianthus, would not be classed as different kinds. Using only fresh, home grown flowers. Dried or silk flowers are not allowed. The definition of a vase is any vessel can be used to hold cut flowers which is taller than it is wide at its widest point. TOP VASE is open for anyone to enter and is not intended purely for growers who regularly display single species classes at shows. Judges should use their discretion, bearing in mind that entries may be from inexperienced exhibitors. Judges should note the display should be viewed all round, points clearly marked by the judges on the exhibitor s card. Queries not covered by the rules above will be referred to and decided by the Show Officials. 13

14 THE WHAS CHALLENGE PRIZE (Class 10a) 1. The WHAS Growers Challenge Prize is open to any group of exhibitors from an existing single allotment site, or a charity, gardening organisation or similar horticultural group. The group shall be named on the entry form. A group leader must be nominated who will be responsible for the overall entry and to whom any prize money will be paid for the group. 2. Prize monies will be awarded under the following conditions: Third prize may be awarded to any entry; Second prize will be awarded only if three or more entries in the class; First prize will be awarded only if five or more entries in the class 3. The entry shall consist of a Show Bench of Harvest Produce (any vegetables/flowers/herbs/fruit/home produce). The exhibit stand/ bench s footprint should not exceed 36 wide x 30 deep (90cm x 75cm). The Show Bench may be covered in cloth or painted, at the exhibitor s discretion, and may have raised edges. Accessories such as plates, sand and rings will be allowed. 4. Innovation and creativity is to be encouraged, and the points awarded will reflect this. 5. The number and variety of produce items to be displayed is not limited, but all must be contained completely within the footprint as above. 6. Onion tops may be tied or whipped using raffia or string. Peas and beans should be displayed with some stalk attached, tomatoes with calyces and soft fruit with stalks, unless there are reasons in the overall exhibit design that makes this undesirable. 7. Judging will be made by judges panel. Up to 60 points may be awarded for the entry at the judges discretion: 20 for the variety and/ or choices of produce; 20 for the condition, presentation, quality and (where relevant) uniformity; 20 for the creativity shown in the display design. 14
