5 Check In Get to the event in plenty of time so you are not rushed. Make sure all your team has signed up and filled out permission slips online (in the STIMS system) or that you have the required permission slips with you. Just one person needs to check the whole team in. While the coach is checking in, the rest of the team can be setting up the pit. Make sure everyone knows your team number. This is how you will be called and known throughout the day.

6 The Pit This is where you keep all your materials and your robot while you are not competing or presenting to the judges. You can display your project posters / information for others to see. You can decorate your pit if you wish. Some teams bring things to handout. The pit is usually fairly small and has one table for you to use. When available, make sure someone is at the pit to answer questions

7 Robot Competitions Usually there is 1 practice round and 3 competition rounds. Highest Score Wins the robot rounds. Your top score is how you are ranked. Remember to charge your robot between rounds. Don t forget any attachments or accessories you need. Carry your robot around in a container to protect it. Know your team number. You will be called and cued up by team number not team name. Judging sessions take priority over robot rounds. So if there is a conflict, go to your judging session first.

8 Robot Judging Session This is where your team will show your robot to the judges and explain your design and strategy decisions. Bring your robot and all attachments with you. The judges will have the team run a mission or two for them to see. Have a couple missions ready to show. Bring a copy of your programming for the judges. The team should be able to explain unique features about their robot. Be prepared for things not to work correctly. Judging tables are often not in as good of shape as competition tables. Don t let it throw your team. No coaches/mentors/parents are allowed in any judging sessions.

9 Project Judging Sessions This is where the team gets to present what they have learned while doing their project and what their solution to the problem is. Prepare a presentation ahead of time. Creativity counts! There is a time limit of 5 minutes for the presentation. This includes set up, so don t make it too complicated. (No adults can help with this). You can use technology, but don t rely too heavily on it. There are often problems, so have a back-up plan if it doesn t work. Make sure you identify the problem you are solving and are clear about what your solution is. Make sure everyone on the team has a role in the presentation. The last few minutes will be judges asking questions about your project, so be prepared with answers.

10 Core Values Judging Session The core values judging consists of a simple activity the team solves together and then a team presentation about their core values. Be sure to make and bring a core values poster board. Practice some team building activities during the season so the team gets used to working together. It s not about how you complete the challenge, it s about the teamwork. Practice presenting your core values ahead of time so the team doesn t just read off their poster. The judges will usually ask the kids some questions about their core values.

11 Robot Tournament Some regionals will have an optional robot tournament at the end of competition for teams that are interested in participating. This is a fun way to run your robot a few more times, so don t put it away too quickly. They are usually single or double elimination tournaments. This doesn't count towards awards, it is simply for fun. You usually need to sign up to enter. Listen for announcements at the end of the regular robot rounds. If you don t enter, find a team or two to cheer on.

12 FLL Scoring Core Values Project Robot Game Tech. Judging Overall Ranking is 1/3 core values, 1/3 Project, & 1/3 Robot (half robot game and half technical judging).

13 Closing Ceremonies & Awards All the teams will gather together at the end to celebrate the end of another great tournament. All teams will receive a medal. Be prepared to give lots of high fives! You have to participate in all judged areas and robot games to be eligible to win an award. Awards are based on merit and scores. The top teams will move on to state. The championship teams, and those moving on to the state tournament, must rank in the top 40% in the robot rounds.

14 FLL Tournament Tips Remember to have fun! Dress up get matching shirts and/or hats. At the tournament, spend time looking at what other teams have done. Plan what you are going to do for lunch before tournament day. Even if you aren t ready to compete, come to the tournament and do what you can. Bring a box of extra supplies (Extension Cords, Robot Batteries/Chargers, Tools, etc.)
