3 DID YOU KNOW THAT HIGH TECH KIDS ORGANIZES ADDITIONAL FIRST PROGRAMS? Check out a FLL Jr or FTC event! Schedules available at Students grades K-4 Teams research the current challenge theme and display their finding on a Show Me Poster. Using LEGO elements, incorporating LEGO WeDo, teams design and build a model with a simple machine and moving part. Students grades 7-12 Teams design, build, and program their robots using Java to compete in an alliance format against other teams. Teams, with the help of coaches, mentors and volunteers, are required to develop strategy and build robots based on sound engineering principles. Awards are given for the competition as for well as for community outreach, design, and other real-world accomplishments. 10 FLL Jr introduces STEM and science discovery to our youngest Minnesota learners. As students age out of FLL, FTC fosters additional STEM opportunities to Minnesota students. CODE CHAMPIONSHIP COMING AUGUST 17, 2019 Competitive computer coding has arrived! Build a computer bot to play head to head against other coders in your age group. Fun for both the experienced and first time coder. Code Championship is for students ages 8-15 Information about the Code Championship and Coding Boot Camps may be found at Brought to you in partnership with Abamath. CORE VALUES The FLL Core Values are the cornerstones of the FLL program. They are among the fundamental elements that distinguish FLL from other programs of its kind. Discovery: We explore new skills and ideas. Innovation: We use creativity and persistence to solve problems. Impact: We apply what we learn to improve our world. Inclusion: We respect each other and embrace our differences. Teamwork: We are stronger when we work together. Fun: We enjoy and celebrate what we do! IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW Teams should arrive 5 minutes early to judging and sessions will last 15 minutes. Research and Design & Programming judging is open to the public as space allows. Be respectful of the team and turn off all cell phones before entering the room. Please NOTE Core Values judging is NOT open to the public. One adult is asked to accompany the team to this judging session. Please keep all food and beverages in the concession/cafeteria area. No food or beverages are allowed in the gymnasiums. Concessions proceeds are typically fundraisers that support local school and youth programs. Please consider supporting them! This is a public facility. All robots, computers and other valuables are the team s responsibility. Items should not be left unattended. Wi-Fi is not guaranteed to us or the general public. Merchandise is available for purchase from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. All proceeds support High Tech Kids. Everyone working today is a volunteer, giving their time and doing the best he/she can. KEEP CORE VALUES IN MIND TODAY Share Challenge Sets and Practice Tables in your Pit Area. Officials may observe teams at any time during the day. Please demonstrate Gracious Professionalism! 3

Advancement is based on a combination of all three judging sessions as well as a teams highest robot performance score. Teams must be well rounded in ALL areas of competition. Note: Robot Scores during the head to head rounds are not factored into advancement. Another team did something REALLY awesome! If you witness, or are the recipient of, a kindness please come to the officials room and let us know! Our team needs to leave early. Please let us know if your team is leaving early. To have medals and rubrics mailed, simply go to the merchandise table and fill out the mailing envelope. The cost to mail awards is $7.00. Our team advanced to Sectionals! What s next? Congratulations! Teams may choose from the three Sectionals offered. There will be instructions in your envelope about how to register along with a link. The coach will also receive an from High Tech Kids. Remember Kids do the Work Please note that all work presented at an official event should be the work of the students on the team. Why does HTK collect Demographics of our team? High Tech Kids is a 501(c)3 nonprofit entity and demographic data is something our sponsors ask. HTK does not receive financial support from FIRST to run these programs nor do they share this type of team information with us. We appreciate your cooperation. Are High Tech Kids and FIRST the same? High Tech Kids and FIRST are completely separate entities. They are not tied together financially or organizationally. FIRST has partners around the world who manage events locally. In Minnesota, High Tech Kids is the partner organization for FLL Jr, FLL and FTC. Young Mentor/Leader Awards Do you know an outstanding youth who works with Minnesota FIRST LEGO League teams? Each year we recognize our extraordinary MN youth leaders and mentors with a scholarship. Nominations are open on the High Tech Kids website under Grants and Scholarships. Can I still volunteer? Absolutely! We have opportunities in judging, refereeing, scorekeeping and more. Please see the volunteer section of our website or contact Kendra@hightechkids.org. 5
