2 Indy South Tournament at Center Grove MS N. On December 15th, 2018, Center Grove Middle School North in Greenwood, Indiana hosted 29 robotics teams for the Indy South Tournament. These teams all competed in five matches that followed the format outlined in the Rover Ruckus game manual, and then the finalists competed in team alliances. Greenwood Robotics arrived around 7 AM and set up two tables for 8791 and 8793 in the pit. They displayed team names, numbers, and robots even got festive by setting up a tree! Some members stayed and answered questions, while other team members went to tables belonging to other Robotics teams and enjoyed getting to know them. After getting settled, some team members also scouted the matches in the gymnasium and observed the strategies of other teams. Drivers for Greenwood Robotics competed in five qualifying matches. In terms of the 8791 matches, the 8791 robot went through five matches and achieved thirteenth place overall. They won matches two, three and five, but gained a major penalty in match one (due to staying too long in the depot) and lost communication with their robot in match four. They worked among themselves with their mentors and solved the issue quickly.

3 High School Team (8791) won matches 2, 3, and 5, and lost matches 1 and 4. Match 1 was a rough start with a major penalty due to staying in the depot too long, but they picked themselves back up in the next two matches. It was during match 4 where problems began: the robot stopped responding. Mentor Mr. Zook and a referee worked with the drivers to solve the connection issue, and they won match 5. They finished in 12 th place out of 29. Our middle school team (8793) also had their own issues, but still managed to compete well. They won matches 2, 3 and 5 and lost 1 and 4, just as In the first match they were stuck to the lander and could not gain any points. Because of this, they decided to begin on the ground rather than hanging from the lander. They then ran a successful autonomous program to score points. The drivers began pushing minerals into depots during the driver-controlled period in matches 3, and 4 and managed to attach to the lander at the end of both! In match 5, however, they couldn t latch, so they parked halfway in the crater. They finished in 10 th place out of the 29 teams. Overall, the competition was a success! The teams each won an award (shown on the cover), and Ivy Rimer was revealed to be a semi-finalist for the Dean s List. Support the team at our next competition! 4 Ivy Rimer Semi-Finalist for FIRST Dean s List Ivy Rimer, our head programmer at Greenwood Robotics and a programmer for the team since 2014, was nominated by head-mentor Chris Campbell for the FIRST Dean s List Award. This award is given to sophomore and junior students in FIRST who prove they are great leaders to their teams. At the Indy South Qualifier, Ivy Rimer was revealed to be a Semi-Finalist for the list, which is a great achievement. Ivy is involved in other parts of GHS as well. Since her freshman year, she s participated in the Purdue Academic Super Bowl for the science team. She also is a part of the Unity Club, a club that welcomes students in the LGBTQ+ community. They discuss current policy and social events that affect the community.

5 Tatiana Andrade s Scholarship from Rose-Hulman Tatiana Andrade, a senior builder for Green Machine and a part of Greenwood Robotics since 2015, recently was given a full tuition scholarship from Rose-Hulman, thanks to her academic standings. She s earned exceptional grades through all of high school and has gotten the attention of one of the top engineering colleges in the state. If she keeps her standing, this scholarship will pay for her classes, books, and a computer. Rose-Hulman informed her through a letter in the mail. She said that she was surprised. Rose-Hulman is a hard school to get into, and getting a full tuition scholarship on top of that is amazing. Before receiving the letter she was also considering Purdue, but with the scholarship, Rose-Hulman may be the better option. Tatiana is not only a good student and a senior builder for our robotics team, but she s also the choir vice president. She sings in the Rhapsody Choir and Vocal Jazz.
