3 Sandy Valley School Sandy Valley School Invites YOU to the Annual Back to School Open House on August 22, 2013 in the SVS Multipurpose Room 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm Setting the Record Straight While serving on the Sandy Valley Citizens Advisory Council during the term, it became apparent that growing business demands would eventually prevent my attendance at all of the meetings. In November 2012, I contacted the other board members regarding my continuing service. Each board member requested I reapply for the term. Subsequently, I was reappointed. However, 2013 brought increased business and travel. Working in the field of educational consulting is extremely rewarding. While realizing that it would be a disservice to stay on the board, I was aware also that the board could continue with 4, or even as few as 3, members throughout the remainder of the term. Therefore on May 23, 2013, I formally submitted my resignation effective that date. I enjoyed my time on the board and especially working with Chris Munhall and Commissioner Brager as well as various Clark County departments (ie: CCPRO, CCAC, SNHD, Republic Services etc.) in providing support to and improving communication with Sandy Valley. I thank them for allowing me to serve Sandy Valley and ALL of its residents. I wish the remaining SVCAC members all the best! Patrick Lee Shiloh s Guardian Angel & Cherub Programs Shiloh is home to many many older horses. Most were rescued from slaughter, abuse or neglect at an advanced age and are living out their golden years in the rescue. Feeding these older horses can be difficult and expensive, they need extra feed to stay healthy and strong- but with so many other horses also in the rescue, the older horse care can be a drain on our finances. So, we have created the Guardian Angel Program especially for our seniors residents. Our Angel Horses are waiting to meet you! See the list of available Angel Horses. Become a Shiloh Guardian Angel with a $60.00 donation to a senior of your choice. GA wings $50.00 of this donation covers the cost of their formulated feed for one month while $10.00 from each $60.00 donation goes directly into our new HALO Fund which is a medical fund that helps Shiloh cover the many veterinary issues that arise when caring for horses in their late 20's and 30's. Or become a Cherub with a $30.00 donation to a senior horse! GA cherub Your $30.00 donation goes toward paying for half of the monthly cost of a senior horse, with $25.00 going to buy the formulated feed for your Angel Horse and $5.00 going directly into our Halo Medical Fund. One time or monthly donations are welcomed and appreciated! Guardian Angels can follow the exploits of the Gummies on their very own Facebook Page. We will also add your to our list and you will receive photos of your Angel Horse each week directly to your inbox. How to become a Guardian Angel or Cherub: Checks or money orders may be mailed to: Shiloh Charitable Trust 777 East Quartz Ave #9005 Sandy Valley, NV Credit cards are also accepted over the phone, please call Jill at SAVE THE DATE Sandy Valley Senior Center On Sunday, September 15, 2013 from 3 P.M. to 6 P.M. Idle Spurs Tavern Sat. Aug. 17th 6:00pm Calling All Leo's BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION KING OF ALL LEO'S Por Ole' George Everyone Welcome (pot luck) (Horseshoe Tournament) The Notice in the Review Journal In regards to the Legal Notice in the RJ discussing CCSD and the proposed land acquisition for a high school in Sandy Valley. This notice was posted by BLM and the application originated in 2007 at which time there was bussing of students from Sandy Valley to Liberty High School. Due to the lengthy process dealing with the federal government the notice is just this year being posted. However, this posting represents another important step toward the acquisition and could mean we will possibly see action within the next 5 years. The reversal of Keystone's offer to donate property was a setback but CCSD is still moving forward with plans to expand and improve our Sandy Valley Schools. 4

5 Valley Electric Sponsored Conference in Utah Bobby Calhoun participated and really enjoyed the event. The picture of the 4 teens that went with me will be on the cover of the September s Ruralite magazine, I am assuming there will be caption on the finished cover (attached). This year s theme was Don t Let Others Change Your Color. Our attendees represented Beatty, Amargosa Valley, Pahrump and Sandy Valley. The week-long event was held July 15-19, 2013 on the campus of Snow College in Ephraim, Utah. There were attendees from Nevada, Utah, Wyoming as well as Colorado, approximately 115 youth attendees plus many chaperones. This was a great opportunity for our youth to learn about the cooperative business model and make new friends while becoming inspired. The UREA Youth Leadership Challenge gave them a chance to learn leadership skills, build selfesteem and challenge themselves. Rebecca Lockhart, a member of the Utah House of Representatives and Utah s current Speaker of the House spoke to the attendees and answered many questions on government. Interestingly she is a Nevada native. One activity divided everyone up into groups that were electric cooperatives. They were given criteria and had to make decisions for the cooperative and create rates. It was interesting to see how the different groups came up with different rates and then had to explain them as cooperatives do in the real world. The attendees were housed and teamed with attendees from different cooperatives to enable them to make new friends, share experiences and see a different perspective. The days were long and the attendees were worn out with the daily classroom time, Snow Follies (outdoor water games, focus on teamwork) and the ropes course. They were expected to pay attention and take notes. They were given a 30 question written test on the constitution, cooperatives, Rachel s Challenge and other topics addressed throughout the week. A few questions from the test dealing with cooperatives: 1. What year was the Rural Electrification Act signed? 2. What person(s) at the coop make polices? 3. What is the single biggest cost for electric cooperatives? There was a dress code in place throughout the week with everyone expected to dress in their best dress for the banquet. They youths adhered and no one complained. Bobby represented Sandy Valley High School, the community of Sandy Valley and Valley Electric well, thank you for nominating him. I will be in touch early next year for a nominee from Sandy Valley again. Fundraiser dinner for Adrian Singh (Rachel & Larry Singh Sat.
