2 The F /Stop Two Rivers Photography Club - Newsletter Founded: June 2010 website: No. 34 April 2018 A Message from Barry Biddle, TRPC President Spring is coming and we have several spring events planned. First is the annual seminar on April 7th and 8th. If you haven t signed up hurry and do so, or plan on doing a walk-in at 8:30 a.m. on the 7th. Also on May 19th the club is sponsoring a bus trip to Longwood Gardens, a great place to visit in spring. For details on these events check out the club website. What is coming next besides spring? Well it is time to prepare your images for the End-of-Year competitions. Gather up all of your images that placed first, second, third or honors and submit them for the EOY competition. Also take a look at the criteria for the Burgess Award and the Buran Millett Award and consider submitting for these competitions as well. Entries for all EOY competitions will be due by April 13th. Remember all entries, print and projected must be submitted on the club portal. The physical prints must be turned in at the April 13th club meeting. Winning print images from the 4/13 competitions should be left that night, but remember to enter them on the portal. You will have until the middle of the following week to make the portal entries for both print and projected images that were winners on the 13th. All of the entries will be displayed at the End-of Year Dinner. Speaking of the dinner, don t forget to mark your calendars for the dinner which will be on Friday May 11th at Atrio Banquets and Catering, 409 Hooper Rd., Endwell. It is always a fun evening and a time to review many of the wonderful images from the past year and to hand out some awards to club members for their achievements. As our regular meetings come to a close for the year in April don t forget to stay abreast of club happenings via the web page or Facebook. Any additional club outings or trips will be posted there as well as announcements as plans get firmed up. TwoRiversPhotographyClub/ PAGE 1

5 Successful Winter Classes! as well as his personal work. Chuck gave hints about angle, framing, readiness, and emotional impact. Following his comments about photojournalism were descriptions of his work with the Red Cross in the Houston and Puerto Rico disasters. On January 20th, at the Vestal library, the club sponsored the first of four presentations that constituted our winter classes. The kick-off event on the 20th was a well-attended and interesting talk by nature writer and photographer Rick Marsi who described and projected images of our region s wetlands and the native flora and fauna. Afterwards he answered questions and sold copies of his illustrated book, Log Cabin Year: 48 Reflections from Our Seasons Past. Next, on February 3rd, was photojournalist and Red Cross volunteer Chuck Haupt. He described his trade as capturing a story-telling moment, using examples from past greats like Dorothea Lange, Eugene Smith, Gordon Parks, etc., The February 17th session featured the annual Hi-Jinx challenge, with a variety of set-ups for close-up photography. Displays included a light-painting exercise in a darkened meeting room, colored pencils arranged artistically, flowers, a light box with translucent objects, toys, Christmas tree lights, and CDs arranged to reflect lights. The 20 participants attending all agreed it was a fun time, and a few of the images captured showed up in competitions, including the smartphone contest at the Co-op Gallery. Concluding the classes on March 3rd were several presentations by club members on challenging one s self to take more and better photographs and also on various gadgets and tools that can be useful. Continued on Next Page... PAGE 4

6 Cont... Successful Winter Classes! As a side note, these Winter Classes attracted 15 different non-members, predominantly in the first two lectures. All of the sessions had good participation, ranging from 18 to 30 attendees. High Participation in Johnston Competition Cindy Ruggieri started off the session with a slide show of photos she took on every single day in November. It demonstrated one approach for pushing one s boundaries while illustrating the challenges of finding interesting subjects on rainy days. Following Cindy was Kathy Whisman s talk about a variety of books that inspire photographers to strengthen their skills, have fun, become great, break out their rut, and to set up self-challenges. These improvement ideas include taking a picture every 20 minutes, doing the same every 20 steps in a nice environment, capturing 30 images every minute in a 30 minute time span, varying one s angle, lens, and lighting on a single scene, etc. The class concluded with several club members showing gadgets and tools that can aid any serious photographer. Our club once again co-sponsored the annual Bob Johnston Memorial Photography Show and Competition in January, with 15 members submitting 39 prints, 7 of which won awards. Judge Chuck Haupt spoke at the awards ceremony at the Cooperative Gallery 213, praising the high quality of the 100+ entries, and he gave one of his two Judge s Choice awards in black and white images to Sandra Kirker for her Adirondack Mist print. Adirondack Mist, by Sandra Kirker Honorable Mention awards went to Fr. Jim Dutko for Conscientious Canines, Geoff Gould for Dyrholaey Promontory, Sandra Kirker (again) for Painted Tulip, Deb Rockefeller for Morning Stroll, Carol Saggese for Poppies, and Mary Lou Shapinas for Cumberland Sleeps. Congratulations to all. PAGE 5

7 Closed Board Topics for Projected April 13, 2018 The Inside of Something 2 entries allowed A Good Winter Outing at the Zoo Get That Itch, by Deb Rockefeller Once again, in January, a group of club members participated in the annual Winter at the Zoo photo competition at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse. And once again, one of our club members won the Grand Prize award for the best-inshow image. Last year it was Susan Thorne for her shot of a pensive fox, and this year it is Deb Rockefeller for her striking shot of a markhor, also known as a screw-horn goat. She used the title Get that Itch. In addition, Jamie Slater won the Best Action Picture award with her in-your-face shot of a lion, entitled Fury. The zoo s contest takes place for the entire month of January and features free Fury, by Jamie Slater admission to anyone carrying a regular camera. More than 850 images were submitted this year. Predictably, for this wild winter we had been having, the initial day chosen to travel to Syracuse got changed due to snow, but the group made it there by month s end, with good results and lots of picture-taking. Upcoming Field TRip to Longwood Gardens Longwood Gardens is an American botanical garden that consists of over 1,077 acres of gardens, woodlands, and meadows in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. It is one of the premier horticultural display gardens in the United States. (Per Wikipedia) Below is the information for the trip scheduled for May 19th, Please join us & invite your friends.
