1 Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology ACADEMIC BOOSTERS AWARDS RECEPTION Thursday, June 4, :00 ~ 7:00 p.m.

2 Thomas Jefferson High School Academic Boosters, Inc. TJ Academic Boosters actively supports our outstanding academic teams in their various pursuits. Some 20 academic teams compete in local, state, national, and sometimes even international events. Since financial resources are not available from FCPS, Academic Boosters asks families to join the organization at various financial levels, which is tax-deductible. This enables Academic Boosters to pay teacher travel expenses and help with student registration fees when possible. Even with Academic Boosters support, academic team members pay for their own travel, room, meals, and other related expenses. TJ Academic Teams include: Biology Olympiad, Botball (Robotics team), Certamen, Chemistry Team, Chess Team, Computer Team, Forensics, Future Problem Solvers, Japan Bowl, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Math Team, Model United Nations, Physics Team, Policy Debate, Public Forum Debate, Quiz Bowl ( It s Academic ), Rocketry Club, Rubik s Cube Team, Science Bowl, Science Olympiad and Student Congress, among others. Information about most of the teams is provided on the Academic Boosters website: Academic Boosters gathers information about team accomplishments for the TECHCETERA newsletter, recognizes family memberships, promotes Academic Teams at orientations and open houses, and organizes a year-end Team Recognition Ceremony. Our TJ Academic Teams achievements have always been a source of pride for the entire TJHSST community and are a cornerstone of our national reputation for academic excellence. Everyone is welcome (and encouraged!) to join TJ Academic Boosters by making a donation, either by check or online through Paypal. Funding comes primarily from family memberships; it is supplemented with food and merchandise sales. 100% of the money raised is used to support TJ s academic teams. Recommended donation levels start at $50 per year. THANK YOU to all of our wonderful Teacher Sponsors, for without them, we would not have Academic Teams. THANK YOU to all who have supported TJ Academic Boosters this school year! ** We look forward to seeing you all again next year ** REMEMBER it's never too early to join TJ Academic Boosters for the upcoming school year! 5 Certamen (Latin) This year, TJ Latin attended the 61 st Annual National Junior Classical League Convention, hosted by Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. TJ's performance was exceptional on all counts and competitions, academic tests, creative and graphic arts alike. Outstanding achievements, however, were wrought by: Anthony Carrington, who earned 1 st place and a record-breaking score on the Mythology V exam; Arjun Guidroz, who was a member for Virginia's Novice-level Certamen team, placing 3 rd in the nation; and Owen Hoffman, who placed 1 st in an impressive number of academic tests. TJ Latin's performance at Virginia Junior Classical League's Convention, hosted in Richmond, saw similarly exceptional results in all fields. The TJ delegation as a whole also took 2 nd place for Spirit and 1 st place for Scrapbooking. TJ attendees' scores were also scattered thoroughly across the top ten placings for many academic tests, and many awards were earned in creative and graphic arts. Sweepstakes placings, given to those students whose overall performance in all categories (academics and the arts) was formidable, were in abundant supply amongst TJ attendees: 9 th Grade: Meenakshi Balan, John Kim, Kevin Le, Minyoung Hwang 10 th Grade: Stephanie Do, Akshay Balaji, Katie Tam, Rebecca Mays, Eric Liu 11 th Grade: Daniel Chae, Ryan Golant, Michael Rodriguez, Matthew Sun 12 th Grade: June Ge This year's Certamen season was unfortunately sparse, with weather and scheduling complications canceling many Certamina. However, despite the bad harvest and limited number of competitions, TJ Latin's performance remained impressive, attending the the SCL Kickoff, the Flint Hill, the Wakefield, and the State Final Certamina. While there was no Certamen hosted at TJ for the second year, due to construction work, its members contributed efforts to support other Certamina, volunteering for setup, scorekeeping, and moderating. The final results of the State Finals Certamen, listed below, provide a glimpse into the extensive dedication of the veterans and newcomers alike: The Latin I team, consisting of Freshmen Kevin Le, Minyoung Hwang, John Kim, and Henna Nam, proved their stunning ability by placing 2 nd in State Finals; their impressive performance will be a firm foundation for future teams. The Latin II A team, made up of John Erskine, Jonathan Ko, and Joseph Park, finished 4 th overall in the finals, while the Latin II B team, Leeyung Chang, Milana Wolff, and Stephan Seo placed in the top 8.

6 The Latin III team, Arjun Guidroz, Anshu Sharma, Akshay Balaji, and Sanji Bhavsar, put on a spectacular performance, making it to the finals with a surfeit of points, ultimately taking home the 3 rd place trophy. TJ Certamen can rest assured that Upper Level will be in capable hands next year. Lastly, Upper Level A Team, comprised of June Ge, Junyoung Hwang, Minjae Kwon, and Ryan Golant, fought its way to finals and ultimately placed 3 rd. The B team, made up of Bill Tang, Andrew Huang, and Hyungju Moon, placed 5 th. State Finals had an Academic Decathlon in addition, prior to the Certamen. Awards went to June Ge, who scored highest of all seniors in attendance, and Ryan Golant, who scored second place in the OVERALL competition!! Wow! The wheel of time goes around and around and has come full circle back to the summer. This July, TJ Latin will attend the 62 nd annual NJCL Convention at Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas. 22 students will be in attendance with Ms. Conklin leading our flock! TJ Certamen players are trying out for the Virginia state team, and we hope for all the TJ students to once again show their skill and bring glory to the Virginia Delegation. Finally, the team gives the greatest thanks to Ms. Conklin and Ms. Lister, our teachers and sponsors. Without their support, effort, and infinite patience, TJ Latin would be far less than what it is today. Our Certamen Coordinators too merit recognition Bill Tang, Minjae Kwon, and Junyoung Hwang for their devotion to the cause and guidance. Last and far from least, thanks is given to all of TJ Latin's parents, without whose cooperation, we could not have accomplished what has been accomplished.

A team of Justin Yum, Ryan Golant and Ruyan Zhang defeated teams from Stonewall Jackson and La Plata in the first round and advanced to the playoff rounds where the TJ team played against St. Anselm and Osbourne Park. The first round was broadcast on NBC4 at 10:30 AM on March 21, and the playoff round was broadcast at 10:30 AM on May 23. In addition to these achievements, we have had great success in our regular season tournaments playing at University of Delaware Novice Tournament on November 1, 2014, at Centennial Invitational Tournament on November 9, 2014, at Cavalier Classic at UVA on November 15, 2014, at VCU Winter Tournament on December 6, 2014, at GSAC XXII on December 13, 2014, at HERMES at Richard Montgomery High School on March 28, 2015 and at VA NAQT States at UVA on May 2, Members Rohan Hedge, Alex Howe, Grant Li, Varun Mosur, Aditya Sarkar, Andrew Wang, Wendy Yin, Nikul Dar, Colin Murphy, Ruyan Zhang, Michael Yue, Saurav Pattanayak, Ryan Golant, Joanna Gerr, Paul Dumitrescu, Justin Yum, Bobbie Sheng and Ranjani Parthasarathy represented the TJ teams at these tournaments. The novice tournament is an annual event and a wonderful opportunity for freshmen to get involved in Quizbowl. We were thrilled to have such a great turnout this year! On April 18, we hosted the annual Thomas Jefferson Invitational Academic Tournament, or TJIAT which is the only Quizbowl Tournament for high school students in the Northern Virginia area. 16 teams were in attendance, and the tournament was certified platinum by the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE), meaning it

24 was very well-run and the question set used was of exceptional quality. Many club members volunteered to help staff the tournament, which was run by Tournament Directors, Bobbie Sheng and Joanna Gerr, and coaches, Mr. Laffy and Mr. Loo. Due to these successes this year, TJ Quizbowl qualified two teams for each of two different national tournaments. The High School National Championship Tournament (HSCNT), which is run by National Academic Quiz Tournaments, held in Chicago, IL on May Members Rohan Hedge, Alex Howe, Aditya Sarkar, Andrew Wang, Ruyan Zhang, Michael Yue, Saurav Pattanayak, Ryan Golant and Paul Dumitrescu will represent TJ at the tournament. The National Scholastic Championship (NSC), which is run by the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE) will be held in Reston Virginia on June 6-7.

25 Rubik s Cube Every year, the TJ s Rubik s Cube Club sends eight members to participate in the You Can Do the Rubik s Cube team competition. Teams compete to solve 25 Rubik s Cubes as fast as possible. This year, the TJ team came in 2 nd place IN THE WORLD WITH A TIME OF 1:10.03! Results over the years: 2011: 1 st place 2012: 1 st place 2013: 1 st place 2014: 2 nd place 2015: 2 nd place 2015 TJ team members: Peter Gunnarson (Senior) Devin Kim (Junior) Eli Lifland (Junior) David Zhao (Junior) Landon Chu (Sophomore) David Chao (Freshman) Frank Ding (Freshman) Shreyan Jaiswal (Freshman) Adam Yee (Freshman) Members of the TJ team first meet through tryouts, which are often hosted in late January. Candidates are selected based upon a combination of speed, which is gauged through solve times, and teamwork, which is noted through club participation. After the tryout period, team members spend the next two months practicing together three times a week before competing in the competition! Additionally, all individual members of the club are encouraged to participate in competitions hosted by the World Cubing Association. These are official competitions where people meet other Rubik s Cube solvers and break records!

26 The team would like to thank the club sponsor Ms. Christine Conklin for an incredible amount of work towards keeping the club together, the parent volunteers who graciously offered to help with transportation, and the club officers Albert Chuang, Alex Wendt, Peter Gunnarson, Eli Lifland, and Catherine Im! We are incredibly sad that our four-year Senior Members are leaving us for college. Their enthusiasm for TJ Cubing and dedication to teaching new members have been superior!

27 Science Bowl Congratulations to the TJ Science Bowl Team of Janice Ong, Ross Dempsey, Franklyn Wang, Tiger Zhang and Matthew Barbano, who competed in the U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl in Washington D.C. from April 30 through May 4, Lead by their coach, Ms. Mary Ann Donohue, the team played against the top students from 68 schools across the nation and won 2 nd place, bringing home $ and a trophy for the school, as well as individual medals.
