TEAM OPTIONS Recreational Team B (Rec B) is open to gymnasts in grades 5 and up. Top Flight Gymnastics offers two options for Rec B. 1. The first option is a non-competitive program that allows for the development of increasingly advanced skills. These skills may then be developed into routines. 2. The second option is a recreational competitive program, called the Mason Dixon League Team, which will help the gymnast learn new skills and develop routines that they will compete in Mason-Dixon League meets. The gymnast will also develop the strength, flexibility, coordination, and endurance necessary to be a recreational competitive gymnast. The Mason Dixon League Team competes in 4-6 meets per year. In order for a gymnast to participate in the Mason Dixon League option, parents or guardians are required to be members of CMGO and fulfill all CMGO obligations. TOP FLIGHT AND CMGO Central Maryland Gymnastics Organization Central Maryland Gymnastics Organization (CMGO) is an organization for parents and guardians of competitive and pre-competitive gymnasts at Top Flight Gymnastics that is dedicated to promoting competitive opportunities for all gymnasts and to supporting the training of gymnastic team members. CMGO works in partnership with Top Flight Gymnastics to maintain state of the art training facilities for gymnasts on Top Flight s teams and represents Top Flight teams at hosted meets. All parents and guardians of competitive and pre-competitive gymnasts on Top Flight teams are required to be members of CMGO and to meet the financial, participation, and time commitment requirements established by the organization. The parents and guardians of gymnasts participating in the Mason-Dixon program are required to be members of CMGO and fulfill all CMGO obligations. Refer to the CMGO Handbook for more information and details. Parents and guardians of gymnasts who choose the non-competitive Rec B option do not participate in CMGO. 3
GOALS OF THE PROGRAM Non-Competitive 1. To learn A, B, and C gymnastics elements that can be incorporated into routines. 2. To develop skill levels appropriate for the individual gymnast. 3. To have the opportunity to workout year round so that the gymnast does not need to develop new skills seasonally. Competitive (Mason-Dixon) 1. To foster the development of each gymnast by setting realistic goals that are achievable through challenging. 2. To develop flexibility and strength. 3. To learn optional skills in accordance with the gymnast s physical and emotional characteristics. 4. To progress towards a higher optional level. The following is from the Mason-Dixon rules for It should provide some insight into the league. 4

The cost per gymnast is $240 and due by September 30, The league will accept checks from the club, the parent association or individual parents (if individual checks the host club will be responsible for any and all bank fees). Since there are no longer any "cross- over" kids the level restrictions no longer apply B. Gymnasts may move up to higher levels at any time during the season at the request of their coach. They may "try- out" a higher level and do one meet at the new level to see how it goes and if unhappy may move back after the one meet. However, if they do a second meet at the higher level they then must compete the higher level the rest of the season to include championships 5
C. Coaches who find they have registered a gymnast at the wrong level for the first meet may move the gymnast back a level before the second meet. However, if they do a second meet at the higher level they must stay at that level for the remainder of the season. D. Gymnasts who have been injured may be petitioned back to a lower level when they return to competition. Cases will be decided on an individual basis by league officials. E. All levels are judged by USAG judges using Mason Dixon Gymnastics League Rules and Restrictions. The Rules and Restrictions have been reviewed by Maryland optional judges to ensure that they are clear and reasonably compatible with the USAG Code of Points. F. If a gymnast scores a or higher in the all around at the same level in two of the first three meets of the season that gymnast must either move up a level for the next competition or she may remain at the current level but will NOT be eligible for awards at that level. This will be strictly enforced. IV. AWARDS A. Age divisions will be decided upon by League officials and every effort will be made to keep the groups small enough to give most gymnasts the opportunity to win an award. B. A gymnasts competitive age is the age she will be as of the date of the last day of the Championship meet. C. Awards will be given to a minimum of 50% in every age group. D. All ties will be broken at al all meets. Ties will be broken using the USAG Tie Breaking Rules. There will be one exception: If an age group goes 6 places and there is a 8 way tie for 6th place, there will be no tie breaker. ALL 8 gymnasts will receive a 6th place award and be called up to the podium. E. Medals and ribbons will be given out for all regular season meets and Trophies and ribbons will be given out at Championship. There will only be Team Awards presented at Championships not during the regular season. V. COMPETITIONS A. Member clubs are asked to host meets as dates become available. If you are interested in hosting a meet please refer to the "Meet Host" information flyer available on our website. B. The League pays host clubs $10 per gymnast and provides all awards. C. It is the responsibility of each coach to ensure that all competition is conducted according to Mason Dixon Gymnastics League Rules & Level Guidelines. Coaches are required to act in a mature, polite, respectful and disciplined manner, with complete integrity. Each coach should assist actively in promoting positive relations among all participants. G. Coaches shall ensure that competitors exhibit dignity in manner and dress when representing their club. Mason Dixon League Parent Information Handout Season The Mason Dixon League provides gymnasts with a fun and safe atmosphere in which to enjoy competitive gymnastics. Our emphasis is on having fun while using your skills to the best of your ability. We want ensure that every gymnast gets the same opportunity to compete equally and safely. When attending meets with your child, please keep in mind that your hosts are all parents volunteering their time, so please be good guests. Without these volunteers who are willing to host meets, there would be no League If the meet doesn t run like clockwork, if the facilities aren t as nice as yours, remember how hard everyone has worked to provide the opportunity for your child to compete. If you have serious complaints, please pass them along through your gym owner. 8
LEAGUE RULES Competition Area: Please sit only in the designated spectator areas. Unless marked, all mats and equipment are off limits to spectators. At every meet, there is a marked area that designates the competition area. Do not sit or stand inside this area and do not allow your other children to play inside this area it is not safe for either the spectator or the competitors when other people are in the competitive area. Remember, you are guests at the host gym, so please treat their facilities as you would want them to treat yours. Photography: NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY IS ALLOWED UNTIL ALL COMPETITORS HAVE COMPLETED EVERY EVENT. The distraction can be very dangerous to a gymnast. You may take flash photography during the awards ceremony. Video cameras are welcome without spotlights but all taping must be done from the spectator area. Adornments: Gymnasts may not wear necklaces, bracelets, ankle bracelets, rings of any kind, dangling earrings (small studs in the ears are okay, no hoops), hair glitter or nail polish during competition. Cell Phones: Please turn off your cell phones when you enter the meet. If you need to make or receive a call, go into the lobby or outside. Cheering Do not speak or signal to your gymnast from the sidelines during competition. Cheering is allowed but never boo a score or attempt to distract a competitor. Scoring/Awards Any serious concerns you have about your child s scores should be taken up with her coach after the meet. Do not interrupt the awards ceremony. Do not come out onto the competitive area during awards to get your child. All gymnasts should remain for the entire awards ceremony. Every child deserves the chance to be recognized for her performance in the meet; remember, other parents have stayed to watch your child receive an award, so you need to return the favor and stay until all the awards are presented. Injuries If your child is injured during competition, do not come down onto the floor. This puts the other competitors at risk and does not help your child. Your coach can handle the 9
immediate problems. Once your child leaves the competitive area hugs and comfort from you are of course the best medicine. Complaints If you have complaints about League procedures or about a specific meet, please take them to your gym owner. They can contact the League on your behalf, which is the most effective way to address problems. We want the League to be a good experience for everyone and we will address your concerns to the best of our ability.. Ordering information, including guidelines for measurements and sizing, will be distributed through gymnasts mailboxes. Orders should be placed in August in order to receive leotards in time for team pictures in the fall. Lockers Each gymnast will be issued a locker. It is the gymnast s responsibility to: Keep the locker clean, inside and out. Put all clothing and gear in the locker when not being used. Not leave anything out in the practice area. Be sure that lockers are closed when not in use. Gymnast COMMITMENT TO TEAM The gymnast s responsibilities are as follows: 1. To have long hair tied back 2. To assume all financial responsibilities and to fill out all appropriate forms when requested. 2. To adhere to the policy that there is no smoking allowed at Top Flight Gymnastics Center, Inc. Parents of Rec Team B non-competitive gymnasts are encouraged, but not required, to be actively involved in the parent s organization (CMGO) by helping with fundraising, working at meets, etc. 12
Parents (Mason-Dixon only) All parents of Top Flight Competitive Team members must be responsible for supporting their gymnast in meeting their commitment to the team and for fulfilling financial obligations to the gym and the parent organization (CMGO) in a timely fashion. A Mason-Dixon League registration form will need to be completed when forms are made available, usually in September. General 1. To be an active member of the parent organization (CMGO) and to attend all quarterly parent meetings. To meet both financial obligations and participation requirements to CMGO. All members of CMGO have the following obligations: Fund raising Each family must meet a fund raising requirement as established by the CMGO Executive Board each year in May. Each family must contribute to the Activity Account as determined by the Executive Board. Participation Attend quarterly general membership meetings Participate in, and support, all CMGO sponsored events(not required) A team rep (parent) must be appointed/elected each year to attend monthly board meetings on behalf of the team and serve as a communication liaison between CMGO organization and team members. Please refer to the CMGO Handbook for full details regarding the organization and parental obligations. 2. To assume all financial responsibilities and to fill out all appropriate forms when requested. Failure to meet financial deadlines (for commitments to Top Flight and CMGO) may result in your child s temporary suspension from practice and competitions until debt is cleared. 3. To assume responsibility for your child s attendance at practices, exhibitions, and meets, including sending notices and calling in for sickness, homework or injury. To make a sincere effort to get your child to all practices. 13
4. To call the Team Director if your child must miss practice due to illness and to alert the Team Director, through the receptionist, if your child is taking any medications (over-the-counter or prescription) or complaining of any injury. 5. To allow your gymnast to complete all training assignments before leaving the gym, even if practice is running late. 6. Gymnasts age 7 or older may be dropped off for practice in the front or back of the gym. Gymnasts under the age of 7 should be escorted into the lobby by an adult. Gymnasts may not wait for their ride outside the gym building alone. Gymnasts must be picked up in the front of they gym. 7. To remember that during practice sessions, parents are not allowed to communicate with their child or with the coaches. Please do not try to gain the gymnast s attention from the waiting area. This practice is dangerous to all the gymnasts because it could lead to an interruption of concentration of any of the gymnasts. If there is an emergency or pressing situation, please contact the receptionist or the Team Director and we will send the gymnast to the lobby. 8. To occasionally try to observe (from the lobby) all, or a portion, of a practice. During these times, your child will learn to concentrate better on the activities at hand and not on who is watching. The development of this ability is very beneficial to the gymnast in competition. Disruptions in concentration and poor handling of stress result in negative experiences in gymnastic competition. 9. To control diet and nutrition. 10. It is highly suggested to have a yearly physical exam for your child and have its results filled out on medical forms supplied by, and returned to the Front Office by May 31. Yearly Physical Exams are not required. 11. To be a positive influence on your child and the team. 12. To adhere to the policy that there is no smoking allowed at Top Flight Gymnastics Center, Inc. To never talk to judges during meets or directly following competition. 4. To avoid entering the competition area during a meet. 5. To try not to convey your own nervousness or emotions about competition to your gymnast. Remember that most parents become tense or nervous during competition. Although it can be difficult, if parents can remain at ease before and during competition, it can allow the gymnast to feel less stress, which can improve performance. 6. To provide transportation for your gymnast to and from meets. 7. To serve as a chaperone at meets when asked by the Team Director. 14
