1 Editor s Note April 2009 I just wanted to take this time to thank the owners of the Hansen Range, the club officers and all of you! Cher and I have made more and some of the best friends in the 8 months we have been members of the SWFPS than at any other time. Thank You, you are truly a great group of people and we look forward to each and every time we shoot with you. ~ Jon Hall. President s Blog I would like to thank everyone for the overwhelming response to the newsletter. Great job, Jon Hall. Everyone seems to really like the calendar which can be printed out and tells what's in store for the weekend. You will notice on this month s calendar that a Multi-Gun match is not scheduled in April since the SASS Cowboy Club is having a sectional match that weekend. This will happen from time to time so we will have to work together to coordinate some of our major matches during the year. Guns and ammo are still hard to come by with the buying panic after the election. I liken this to the housing market frenzy of a few years back. I think we all know how that ended up. Someone ed me a letter the other day addressed to Eric Holder, our new Attorney General. The letter was from 46 Democratic Congressmen advising him to back off the gun control and ban issue since the first ban resulted in loss of control to the Republicans. I have not seen this letter mentioned in the newspaper and I think that s because they don t want the anti-gun people to see it. I also haven t seen it on the pro-gun websites either probably because the guns and ammo dealers are making a killing on the panic buying. Let s avoid getting caught up in this and just buy what we need for now. Errol Lawson has been appointed Stage Design Coordinator. If you have any questions regarding a stage you are setting up, Errol will be happy to guide you in the right direction. He will also be checking the stages during the walk-thru for any safety concerns and IPSC rule infractions. If he finds something wrong with a stage you have designed, PLEASE do not be offended. We are just trying to put on the best and safest matches possible. I will try to schedule a Range Officer certification class this summer. If you are interested in becoming a Certified Range Officer please send me an and I will start a list. We need more Range Officers in the clubs as this would make squading a lot easier. Cost of the class will be $40.00 and we need 20 people. This will be a 2 day course with one day in a classroom, which Tactical Weapons of Fort Myers has been kind enough to offer us the use of and one day at the range. Please let me know if you are planning to shoot the Florida State Match and would like to be on the same squad with Lesley and I and we will send in our applications together in the same envelope. We did this a couple of years ago and the whole squad was comprised of Fort Myers shooters. We had a blast. The buffet restaurant in Sebring is still talking about Andy Glivic. The Port of the Isles shooting range is under new ownership. The range is located on US 41 South below Naples. Lou Zalesnak is the new owner and has renamed it Louland Gunclub. Lou sponsors a Monday night 3-gun match and also shoots 3 stages of IPSC every Thursday evening. These matches start at 5PM. He also has skeet, trap, sporting clays and a public rifle and pistol range. The public range is open Wed., Sat, and Sunday from 9 to 5. 2 Multi-Gun (When One Gun Just Isn t Enough) Thanks to everyone for a successful multi-gun match in February. There has been a tremendous response to this event and this will grow in size and popularity quickly. I would also like to take this opportunity and give a big thanks to everyone that continues to help with this event. This multi-gun event is a success due to all the volunteers that give their time, effort, and energy; to ensure the enjoyment for all of us. For those that are not familiar with multi-gun allow me to give you some highlights. The definition in the Provisional Addendum to the USPSA Rules, 2008 Edition Multi-Gun Matches states, A multi-gun match is defined as a match in which at least one stage involves the use of two or more different firearm types. A multi-gun match may involve any combination of handgun, rifle and shotgun usage, including stages which involve one, two or all three firearm types. Lets not get too technical here: What we normally do is set up three stages where we use a pistol, rifle, and shotgun. Most people are using their 1911 s or Glocks for pistol (minimum cartridge 9mm), AR-15, Mini 14, M1A, AK, or like items for rifle, and pretty much any shotgun works (minimum 20 gauge). You can expect each stage to require 30 rounds of pistol, 30 rounds of rifle, and 10 rounds of shotgun. Of course, that assumes you don t miss. We shoot poppers with the shotgun, so I would recommend using #6 shot. This is not a sanctioned match, so if everything is not just perfect; please do not crucify me. The idea is to: #1 be safe, #2 have fun, #3 see if we can still use the long guns that are locked in our safes. For those of us that can t help but be competitive, ok that s all of us; we are using The San Angelo Method of scoring. You can read a bunch about this type of scoring on the USPSA web site, but if all you want is the basics here is what you need to know: You will either be classified in Open or Limited for the match and then either in minor or major for the stage. For anyone that was scoring for the February match, you will be happy to know the scoring will be easier and quicker because of the new improved score sheets. We have this shoot the fourth Saturday of each month and the walk through starts at 9:30 am sharp. If you have questions please contact Chris Pink at Chris@msifamily.com.
