2 Summer Safety Summer Break. Finally. After months of hard work, its time for some hard play for students, faculty, & staff alike. Summer is the time to enjoy the sun and cool down at the lake, the beach, or wherever you find yourself traveling. Along the way, it is very important to remember safety for you and those who are going with you (especially if you have children). No matter where you are going this summer, even if its right here in your backyard of San Antonio, below are some general summer safety tips that will help you avoid harm or risk along the way: BEFORE LEAVING If you will be going out of town this summer, always prepare your home before leaving. Leave your porch lights on while you are gone; turn on a few lights throughout your home that will make it look like someone is there; leave the radio or TV on inside the house to also make it seem as though someone is home. Invest in anti-burglary equipment, alarm system, and locks for your home to make it more secure. Getting a home inspection is a good first step to ensure you have the right things in place in your home. Most law enforcement agencies offer free home inspections, which can sometimes also get you a discount on your homeowners insurance. Call your local agency and request an home inspection to make sure you re set up correctly. 2

3 SUN The sun is out and it will be blistering hot. Here in Texas it can be unforgiving. So you must be sure to wear sunscreen. The CDC recommends wearing a sunscreen with a minimum SPF 15, with both UVA & UVB protection (a higher SPF like 50 or 70 will protect you much better). Ensure to put it on at least every 2 hours and make sure your bottle is not expired! HEAT Heat injuries are very dangerous and it is important to watch out for them because they creep up on you. Hydration is the key to avoiding these injuries. Drink plenty of water or fluids throughout the day. New studies show that even drinking tea, coffee, juices, milk, & soup will hydrate you even though some have a slight diuretic effect. Alcohol is not part of this because it is extremely dehydrating be sure to drink water if you will be consuming alcohol. WATER SAFETY If you have children, never leave them alone or unattended in the water. Child drowning victims account for 20% of all drownings swim lessons & lifeguards should not be relied upon as drown-proof. For the adults, be careful when you swim and never swim after consuming alcohol. If you will be swimming in the ocean, always make sure swim where there are lifeguards on duty and be careful with the rip currents. If you will be boating, do not drink and drive a boat. Always make sure you and all passengers wear a life jacket. Take time plan ahead for your summer no matter what you will be doing. Enjoy the slower months and get some rest and relaxation before the start of the Fall semester. 8 1st Shift Congratulates Ofc. Sam Kulbeth for being appointed as our new Bicycle Patrol Coordinator. Kudos were immediately sent in for his efforts to revitalize our bicycle patrol program. Great Job! Strikes for Scholarships 8

9 In April, Officer Johnson encountered a male who was in the midst of a crisis. OFC Johnson patiently worked with the individual to assist him in getting the treatment he needed. Officer Johnson s patience and compassion left an impression on the individual, who was able to later thank Officer Johnson in person and he submitted a letter of appreciation. Great job to OFC Johnson for your professionalism and veteran leadership as a police officer! Lieutenant Thomas Calucci was nominated by Captain Dan Kiley and selected by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement (IACLEA) Awards and Recognition Committee to receive the 2017 IACLEA Award for Merit. Lt. Calucci will be accepting the award on June 24 th, during the opening ceremonies at the 2017 IACLEA Annual Conference which will be held at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The IACLEA Award for Merit is presented to a member or employee of a campus public safety, police or security department who daily displays professionalism and excellence in performing his/her duties or whose actions and attitude brings credit to the campus law enforcement community. Lieutenant Calucci has demonstrated excellence on a daily basis while managing the Criminal Investigations Section, the Police Communications Center, Co-Chairing the University Behavioral Intervention Team, participating as a senior member of the Police Departments Honor Guard as well as a number of other responsibilities as the Support Services Lieutenant such as Training, Accreditation and Community Affairs. on a job well done!
