Starting next week we will be having homecoming week! The days will be (in no particular order) twin day, where you dress up in the same way of another person; opposite day, a day where girls will dress like guys and guys will dress like girls; prep day (or nerd day) you can either dress up in your preppy clothes, or you can dress up like a nerd; hippie day, this is pretty self-explanatory, you just dress up like a hippie; finally, we have spirit day where you just have to represent the tigers in your black and orange clothing. On Thursday the 18th there will be a powder puff football game where seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen girls will all compete in flag football. Those who signed up for it will be participating and spectators can pay to watch. Then, at the end of the week, the highly anticipated football game against one of our biggest rivals, the Moore County Raiders, will be taking place here at the high school s football field. The homecoming after party will follow shortly behind the game. The after party will have a Mardi Gras theme and will take place in the commons area after the game. The after party will last for two hours, and afterwards the first ever Fayetteville High School lock-in will start! The lock-in will take place in the commons area and in the gym. There will be games, such as the Wii and Xbox, movies, and various finger foods and pizza. Also, later in the night there will be a schoolwide game of hide and seek. That's all that can be expected of homecoming week here at Fayetteville High School! Human Interest Reporter: Kat Collins
Page 2 Apple vs. Android Sixty-five percent of the population use smartphones while standing in the grocery shops or in the market and the other 35% of the population use smartphones while they are on their way to the shops. The two main brand of smartphones I ve seen in stores are Android and Apple. They are both good brands of smartphones, but they each have their own pros and cons. Android has smart watches for their galaxies. They don t crack or break as easily. Android s operating system is all about customization and flexibility. Android can hold more of a work load. On an average, Android is cheaper than Apple products. Android s software is better and more compatible For a first time smartphone user, Android can be a difficult task to learn. Android s apps do not run as smoothly as Apple. Apple s camera is better than Android s. Apple is more popular than Android. Apple s iphone is very light. The accessories for Apple is a lot better than the accessories for Android. Android devices are too big and can t fit in people s pockets. The accessories for Android are limited. Android devices only come in dull colors. On an average, Android devices are heavier than Apple devices. Androids are not as popular as Apple devices. Apple devices have a simple and easy operating system. Apple s manufacturing company uses a cheaply made glass product; therefore, it cracks easily. Apple s iphone needs charging often if not everyday. Even with a small battery, the charging time goes into great length for a full charge. The home button is not very sturdy, so it breaks very easily. With the following information taken into consideration, I have decided that Android is better than Apple. Android has all the attributes. They have a better software. They are cheaper and can hold more of a work load. They don t crack as easily and they have smart watches. In conclusion, I have decided that Android is superior to Apple. Human Interest Reporter: Bill Flynt Diet sodas: Are They Really Good For You? First, it can affect your kidneys. With the average consumption rate at two per day, this doubles your risk of kidney failure. While this can happen with any soda you drink, its more likely with diet soda because of the artificial sweeteners contained in them. Continued..
Secondly, it can mess with your metabolism. A study done in 2008 revealed that just one soda a day can put you at a 34% higher risk of getting metabolic syndrome (which is the group of symptoms that include extra fat on the body and high cholesterol). Thirdly, obesity. Yes, that s it, everyone. Diet soda doesn t help you lose weight at all; in fact, it does just the opposite. You might ask yourself why, and the answer comes back to artificial sweeteners. They disrupt the natural processes in your body. Consuming just two a day increases your risk of becoming obese by 500%. * Fourthly, it may damage your cells. Diet soda contains something called mold inhibitors. They go by the name sodium benzoate or potassium benzoate, which is specifically found in diet sodas. These chemicals can cause severe damage to the DNA- irreversibly damaging your mitochondria. Fourthly, it rots your teeth, which I hope doesn t require any explanation. Finally, I hope this makes you think about what you re doing the next time you go to one of the vending machines. I hope this article has helped you gain a little more insight into diet sodas. * Source: MSN Healthy Living. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Page 3 Human Interest Reporter: Jarad Johnson Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis commonly abbreviated as ALS or referred to as Lou Gehrig s disease, affects 5600 people in the United States each year. Earlier this year, the Ice Bucket Challenge became a viral sensation in promoting awareness for ALS. ALS is a rare neurodegenerative disorder that causes atrophy within one s muscles, weakening them over time. The Ice Bucket Challenge is an activity in which a person must dump a bucket of ice water over themselves through personal nomination, or they can opt out by making a donation towards ALS research. The challenge has garnered massive popularity since its conception and the ALS Association has reported that it has received more than 100 million through donations. 4 Page 4 Obesity Problems are Increasing in Size! Obesity rates are rising greatly in America. Why is that? Adult obesity has doubled, whereas child obesity has nearly tripled since Not only is being obese costly, it also poses serious health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart problems. New measures are to prevent obesity in kids and teens. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have launched a project aimed to help lower obesity rated and essentially teach children how to live a healthier life through exercise and nutrition funded by the Affordable Care First off we would like to congratulate Taylor Bryan on winning Student Body President! I asked her how she felt when they announced that she won. She replied, It was a feeling of excitement and gratitude all at the same time. I was so ready to go ahead and get started on everything I had planned to do. I then asked her What do you plan on doing to better our school and make this year more memorable than any in the past? she answered, I want this year to be the best year that Fayetteville High School has ever had, and I plan to accomplish that by setting new traditions that we can come back and see happening later. I also want to introduce more activities that other high Act. This project is aimed toward low- income families and will inform and educate children ages two to twelve. Also, families can work together to make healthier choices that will benefit everyone, such as going on a hike or snacking on a fruit salad. Parents can encourage their children to turn off the TV and go outside. The whole family can get involved by planting a garden. This will providing healthy homegrown food. Tennessee was ranked number four for obesity in Experts say this can be attributed to low New Queen in the Jungle schools are involved in. I also plan on making the school more inviting to students, parents, and guests. I asked her in what ways would she make all this happen. She replied with I want to replace the old bulletin with a TV that would display news, activities, and pictures of our school and events. I would also like for our school to work with a fast food franchise so we can have new options at lunch. I am also working very closely with the senior officers to plan homecoming and other important events coming up. Sounds like Taylor has a lot of great ideas for now and the future, and I am exciting to see the changes happen! Allie Heffington Wins Vol State Award income, poor education, and lack of groceries. Getting fit is hard work, but it can be done. It does not require a fancy Weight Watchers membership or an expensive grocery bill, just research and a push in the right direction. The answer is simple, make healthy choices. By informing today s youth of the risks and the preventative measures to be taken, we can greatly decrease obesity rates, allowing us to live a longer, fuller life. Human Interest Reporter: Allie Ruhlander Human Interest Reporter: James Keith Allie Heffington, a senior at Fayetteville High School, has made a lot of accomplishments this year. She has made many efforts to exceed well beyond her requirements. Starting off, she is a Line and Design Level II State Winner which earns her a trip to National Congress and a five hundred dollar scholarship to any of the University of Tennessee schools. A Roundup was held at UTM this past year, and she was able to enjoy herself for a week there. The competition was an interview process along with 50% of it being the competitor s record book. She received the highest award a 4H-er can receive which is the Vol State award. This lands her in one of the greatest spots for countless recommendations and scholarships. Allie proves that hard work really does pay off. Human Interest Reporter: Donovan Buford
VOLUME IV, ISSUE II Page 5 The Sprint For Success Has Begun! Cross Country team receives a 200 dollar check for a run dirty cross country kick off from Fleet Feet Huntsville. The 2014 cross country team consist of Bill Flynt, Garrett Blankstrom, Danny Bryant, Savanna Davis, and Haley Austin. The first race took place August 23, It was a very humid day so the times were not what was expected. Bill Flynt, Haley Austin, and Kwunjira Aimprasertsuk didn t compete in this race. Garrett Blankstrom finished with the time of 21:20, which was the best on the team. Danny Bryant had a good time finishing with a 23:34. Savanna Davis, the only girl to run, finished with the time of 33:27. The next meet is being held at Henry Horton. The starting time of the meet is 4:30. It will be held September 9, Sports Reporter: Bill Flynt The Cougar Clash The Lady Tigers volleyball had a district game on Thursday, which saw them clash with long time rivals MTCS. The Ladies came out strong and showed their zeal for the game through a strong performance. They defended well against a very well trained Cougar offense, but despite the Lady Tigers concentrated defending, the height and spiking prowess of the Lady Cougars gave them plenty of cause for concern. The Cougars showed excellent finishing abilities as they capitalized on the Tigers tactical errors and created their own scoring opportunities. Despite their best efforts, the Lady Tigers conceded the game to the Lady Cougars, with final scores of 25-7, 25-5, and in favor of the Lady Cougars of MTCS. Sports Editor: Noah Young
Page 6 Tigers Tackle the Richland Raiders! The FHS football team traveled to Richland Friday night to play the Richland Raiders. The Tigers showed incredible offensive ability throughout the game, and started very early, winning the first quarter with a score of 21-0, and winning the half The Tigers continued to steamroll the Raiders as they executed intricate passing plays and cut the Raider defense to shreds with their quick, decisive running game. The Tigers put up a staggering 478 yards offensively, with 337 on the ground and 141 in the air. The Tigers defense remained solid as they gave up only one touchdown and a meager sum of 67 yards to the Raider offense. The Tigers will be in action again on Friday night, hosting the Raiders from Moore County as homecoming. Sports Editor: Noah Young It s Tee Time! The golf team has played several matches over the last couple of weeks. The Tigers faced Huntland on August 21st at Bear Trace Golf Course, where they took their first victory. Then on the 26th, they took on Cascade and Eagleville. Unfortunately, the Tigers lost this match. On the following Tuesday, they faced Forrest at Henry Horton State Park, where the Tigers suffered another loss. On the 2nd of September, the Tigers faced both Moore County and Huntland and snagged a win against both teams! The team s only female member, Caitlyn Plunkett, is still undefeated going into the district tournament. The Tigers are now preparing for their district tournament on September 9. The match will be played at Henry Horton State Park. Update: Caitlyn Plunkett qualified for the Regional Tourney. Congratulations Caitlyn! Sports Reporter: Nick McGee
VOLUME IV, ISSUE II Page 7 The Forbidden Game series, L.J. Smith Having read L.J. Smith s The Forbidden Game this past summer, I would and willdefinitely classify it as a must-read for any readers who are looking for something good that doesn t include vampires, werewolves, witches, teens with special abilities, etc. The Forbidden Game is really three books in one and each of the three books increase in intensity until the very end. The trilogy begins with The Hunter. Here, Jenny Thornton (main character) buys a game from a mysterious game store in a strange part of town to play with her friends and boyfriend at a birthday party. Only when they start to play the game, the game becomes reality, and Julian the boy who sold her the game- reveals that he is actually a Shadow Man (from the Shadow World, an alternate world in Norse mythology) and hunts Jenny and her friends throughout the book, through the house of horrors that came directly from their greatest fears. They lose one friend but win the game, and then they throw the game away, hoping that that is the last they will see of Julian and the paper house game. In The Chase, Julian has been set free Book Reviews and takes all of Jenny s friends one by one. Jenny manages to save most of her friends, except for her boyfriend and her cousin. Now, Jenny has to go to the Shadow World to save them, which is exactly where Julian wants her to be. Only, this time, Jenny is determined to not let him win, and she isn t going unprepared. In the last book of the series, The Kill, Jenny and her friends are totally at the mercy of the Shadow World and those who inhabit it. They encounter grotesque things that are somewhat human, talking heads, a creepy arcade with a fortune-telling doll in a box with a human soul inside it, and eventually the other Shadow Men, who are much worse than Julian, much older and much more belligerent. And that is where Jenny crosses the line. I could have simply given the plot summary of the series, but that would be telling the whole story, and I don t want to be a spoiler. If you want to know more, you ll just have to read it yourself. It is the quintessence of a fantasy thriller, and I promise it will not be a waste of time. It s intense, fun, and will keep you up into the wee hours of the morning. Human Interest Reporter: Kaiya Gates
