We are all given the right by our founding fathers that all men are created equal. Carter G. Woodson was the son of a slave. He had always been self-motivating despite the circumstances of his life.

Years later, he traveled to Chicago to participate in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the end of slavery. Later, Woodson proposed the idea of Negro History Week.

FHS Blood Drive 2 3 We live in an increasingly diverse society where we are unlike any other person of this world. However, although we all have our differences we all have one similarity. We are all given the right by our founding fathers that all men are created equal. Carter G. Woodson was the son of a slave. He had always been self-motivating despite the circumstances of his life. Despite these difficulties and the lack of money, he was able to teach himself the basics of education and went on to college eventually earning a doctorate degree. Years later, he traveled to Chicago to participate in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the end of slavery. Later, Woodson proposed the idea of Negro History Week. The idea caught on quickly and was expanded into Black History Month. Black History Month is now a time where we honor, appreciate, learn, and celebrate all the men and women who fought to create equal rights throughout history. Page 2 Principal Appreciation! It is rare to find a friend that is constantly by your side urging you to try your best, helping you when you struggle, and celebrating when you succeed.

2 Page 2 Principal Appreciation! It is rare to find a friend that is constantly by your side urging you to try your best, helping you when you struggle, and celebrating when you succeed. For all of the students attending Fayetteville High School, there is an immense amount of faculty that have all these qualities, including our principal, Mr. Jones, and our vice principal, Mr. Stevens. Picture it. As students, we struggle to wake up everyday for school, to study, to do homework, and to attend our extracurricular activities. However, our principals struggle without complaint to ensure that we have all the resources we need to succeed such as overlooking all games, fundraisers, community events, and many other things. It s easy to forget all of the great things these two people do for their school and their students. So, Mr. Jones and Mr. Stevens from all of the students and faculty we would like to honor and thank you for all of the things you do to make our school the best it can be!

On January 30, 2014, Fayetteville High School hosted a blood drive! Through the participation of students, staff, and parents, our school raised 31 units of blood! Much thanks goes to the coordinator Mrs. Carla Warden and others who were involved with this success!

As you know these quickly prepared and unbalanced meals are filled with grease and calories.

Well, if you knew the effects that these meals have on your body physically and emotionally maybe you could make the healthy choice of not eating fast food!

4 VOLUME III, ISSUE V Page 4 Is Fast Food Making Our Country Fatter? Fast food chain restaurants, such as McDonalds, Burger King, Sonic, and many more, have been spreading throughout the United States rapidly. Do you think fast food is making us into a fatter country? As you know these quickly prepared and unbalanced meals are filled with grease and calories. Although these meals have this fault, why are over fifty million people still dining at fast food restaurants? Is it because it s affordable and convenient? Well, if you knew the effects that these meals have on your body physically and emotionally maybe you could make the healthy choice of not eating fast food! In New York, the average fast food lunch meal totals to around 827 calories. According to this statistic, Americans are consuming too many calories in just one meal alone! This is absolutely outrageous! Because of this excess influx of calories, you are at a higher risk of becoming a victim of obesity, a completely controllable condition! Not only has obesity become an issue, eating fast food regularly over a long period of time can increase your chances of type two Diabetes. Editor s Corner Editorial, by Annie Ho We must pay greater attention to keeping our bodies and minds healthy and able to heal. Yet we are making it difficult for our defenses to work. We allow things to be sold that should not be called food. Many have no nutritive value and lead to obesity, salt imbalance, and allergies. -David Suzuki Fast food restaurants are the source of physical conditions, but they are also the source of emotional difficulties such as addiction and depression. People who eat fast food regularly are at a 51% higher risk of attaining these conditions that can be avoided. Now that you know the horrific effects of eating fast food hopefully you will be able to make the healthy choice of not consuming it. Perhaps if we all choose to eat healthier, the United States will be able to elude obesity and other conditions to become a healthier person and a healthier country, not a fatter one.

Lady Tigers Fall to the Eagles! VOLUME III, ISSUE V The Lady Tigers and the Lady Eagles tipped off on Friday, January 31, for the last home game of the Tiger s regular season.

Carrie Staples lead the Tigers in scoring, bagging 10 points. Tamia Baker and Mackenzie Moorehead were tied for second with 5 each. Tigers Storms Over the Eagles!

5 Lady Tigers Fall to the Eagles! VOLUME III, ISSUE V The Lady Tigers and the Lady Eagles tipped off on Friday, January 31, for the last home game of the Tiger s regular season. The Eagles put out a strong display winning the first half The Tigers fought hard to make up the lost ground, but ultimately still lost the game with a final score of Carrie Staples lead the Tigers in scoring, bagging 10 points. The Tigers and the Eagles faced off in the battle of the claws on Friday, January 31, as the two teams decided the result of the last home game of the regular season for the Tigers. The game stayed close for the first two quarters, with a half time score of The Tigers took the lead after halftime and quickly secured the win, finishing the game with a final score of Nick Hopkins led the Tigers in scoring, netting 28 points. James Keith put up 17, although he missed the first quarter due to an ankle injury. 6 Page 6 Tigers Come in Second! Fayetteville High School s Tigers basketball team takes a rough loss against Forrest at the District 9-A tournament! In the Tigers opener against Moore County, they came out on top for a win, Then beat Community to advance to the final round of the tournament. Meanwhile, the Forrest Rockets played and won against Eagleville and Middle TN Christian. Many supporters filled the stands at Community High School on Friday in support of their Tigers. In the first quarter, the Tigers trailed the Rockets Then finished the half, During the second half the Tigers had trouble with scoring, because of this they went into the fourth with a score of Even though the Rockets were not able to score from the floor during the final frame, they were able to rack up 14 points from the line jumping further ahead of the Tigers. The final score of the District 9-A championship game was with the Forrest Rockets taking the win. The lead scorers for the Tigers was Nick Hopkins with 19. Behind Nick was Aaron Parks and James Keith with 6, Osborn Cowell with four, and Michael Parks scored 2. The Tigers hit 10 of 18 from the line and 3 from the arch coming from Nick Hopkins and Aaron Parks Fayetteville High School hosted LEAD Academy on Saturday, February 22. The final score was with LEAD stealing the win in a heartbreaking buzzer beater. Congratulations to the boys basketball team and Coach Murdock for the hard work and dedication.

He achieved this feat at the game against Community. FHS Soccer: The Pre-season Fayetteville High School s Coed Soccer Team begins their pre-season matches under new supervision, Coach Chris Leonardi. On Thursday, February 20, the Tigers clashed against Riverside Christian Academy in a thrilling game! In the beginning of the first half the Knights scored two goals. However, the Tigers were persistent and finally earned a goal scored by Drew Bradford. This marked the beginning of a come back. The final score was 7-2 with Drew Bradford scoring 5 and Noah Young scoring 2. To begin the season, the Tigers will play against Cannon County on March 18th. JV starts at 4 o clock followed by Varsity at 6.

Become A RAKtivist! Kindness is important because it spreads happiness and joy to those around you. Not only that, it helps us generate a sense of joy and tranquility within us. Our students of the National Honor Society have taken up the challenge of spreading random acts of kindness, or RAKs, throughout our school and our community. However, I believe that this challenge should not just be confined to only the students participating in NHS. Instead, I encourage you to follow the lead of the NHS and spread kindness as well. Imagine if everyone in our school did at least one RAK every single day. This kindness would have an impact on everyone! So for once, I m asking you to ride the bandwagon and become a RAKtivist!!!
