1 WIAA STATE INDIVIDUAL WRESTLING Coaches Information Reminder: Division 2 and 3 will weigh-in and begin wrestling on Thursday. As is the case with all large events of this kind, certain security precautions must be observed. We have met with Kohl Center event staff and have reviewed those precautions and have included them in this booklet. Our efforts are to make this tournament as safe and enjoyable as possible for you. Your anticipation of slight inconveniences and your patient cooperation will make everything work better for everyone. FRIDAY WEIGH-INS - DIVISION 1 will weigh-in beginning at 8:30 a.m. Divisions 2 and 3 will begin at 9 a.m. SATURDAY WEIGH-INS - ALL DIVISIONS begin at 8:30 a.m. Coaches need to be aware of: 1. Weigh-in area - In order to keep congestion in the weigh-in area to a minimum, wrestlers will be called to weigh-in by weight class from their seats. Coaches are not allowed in the weigh-in area. 2. ALL Division 2 and 3 wrestlers will be required to weigh-in Thursday. Division 2 and 3 preliminary wrestling will begin Thursday evening (details inside). 3. Coaches are not allowed in the weigh-in area at any time. Coach/Contestant re-entry to Kohl Center will require that your lanyard be punched and your hand stamped, in order to re-enter the venue. All coach/contestants enter/exit via student entrance between Gates A & B. No contestant duffel bags or back packs allowed in arena seats. No laptop computers. Coaches will be allowed to carry a folder, small brief case to their seats (may not be left unattended). No laptop computers. A coat-check style service will be available for wrestler s bags. Bags may not be left unattended at any other location in the Kohl Center. Spectators will not be allowed to bring bags or coolers into the Kohl Center. Wrestlers should bring snacks in their duffel bags. Coolers are not allowed. One pound growth allowance will be added for Friday and Saturday. (e.g. On Saturday 106 becomes 111 for all Divisions.) Keep in mind, no wrestler can be eligible for three weight classes. Subsequently, for a Division 1 wrestler to be eligible to compete at 120 on Saturday the wrestler must weigh 111+; to compete at 160, the wrestler must weigh 150+, etc. Weigh-ins will be conducted per NF rules through 285. Wrestling Cheerleaders: Enter Gate B; Remind them all bags are subject to search. Refer to Kohl Center carry-in policy. Bags may be no larger than 8.5 x 11. Cheerleaders will be required to sit in their ticketed seats and report to the northwest lower level via Section 128 when their school s wrestler is called to the holding area. They will be allowed into the staging area when their wrestler is in the hole. Remind spectators and cheerleaders no food items are allowed. Competitors needing a snack following weigh-ins are encouraged to keep fruit, sealed energy bars, etc., in their duffel bags. Coolers will not be allowed in the Kohl Center. Anticipate added security/inspection procedures at the Kohl Center. Allow extra time. Reading all of the following and studying the maps and diagrams will reduce the amount of frustration you and your wrestlers will experience before and during the tournament. We encourage you to make copies of these materials for anyone they can help. 2 2018 STATE INDIVIDUAL WRESTLING INFORMATION I. DROP OFF, PICK-UP, AND PARKING A. Bus/van drop off for wrestlers will be on Dayton Street in front of the Kohl Center. After dropping off, buses can park on Frances Street (enter from Mifflin Street) and vans/cars will need to find off-street parking. Please plan on taking extra time to find parking in the area. B. There is very limited parking for sale around the Kohl Center. The University will sell parking for $8 per session on a space availability basis. They may have space in Lots 29, 46, 83 and 91. Must pay to re-enter the lot. More information is provided on page 8. C. Spectators are strongly encouraged to use the parking and shuttle service available at Alliant Energy Center (formerly Dane County Expo Center) (see Parking information). II. ENTRY TO THE KOHL CENTER AND SCHOOL PACKETS Note: Remember, all wrestler and cheerleader bags are subject to search - allow extra time. A. Free admissions provided for wrestlers competing, plus two additional persons. Additional coaches, managers, photographers, cheerleaders & advisors must enter through spectator gates and must have a ticket for admission. Note: Metal detectors will be used at all fan entry points. B. Pick up your school packets as follows: All Divisions Thursday - 12:30-4:30 p.m. - Enter via Contestant entry - student entrance on Dayton Street *Coaches Verify your tags! C. Tell your wrestlers NOT to leave string tags lying around while they shower, etc. When they are wrestling, you should put these around your neck. Lost or stolen string tags will be replaced at the cost of $8 per remaining session - billed directly to your school. III. CARRY INS, SEATING AND TRAINING SUPPLIES A. Kohl Center Policy For the safety and security of all patrons, certain items are prohibited, including, but not limited to: any food or beverage items, cans, bottles, coolers, thermoses, backpacks, any bag larger than 8.5 in x 11 in, laptop computers, video recorders, mono/tripods, luggage, strollers, baby carriers, laser pointers, noisemakers, weapons (including concealed carry), inflatables, balloons, beach balls, face paint or body paint. All patrons entering the Kohl Center are subject to search. Storage facilities are not available for checking prohibited items. Metal detectors will be used at all fan entry points. Wrestlers if you wish to bring in fluids, you may do so in a PLASTIC container. Fruit and energy snacks (in sealed wrap) ought to be kept in wrestler s duffel bag. B. Seating for participants consists of all individual seats. YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO USE SEATING AREA TO STORE THINGS. C. A coat-check style service will be available for competitors duffel bags or back packs in the lower level. Bags may not be carried or left unattended in the halls or warm-up area. D. If first-aid items are needed during a match to attend a wrestler, the athletic trainers that have been assigned to work the tournament will provide them. E. Spectators needing medical attention report to First Aid at Section 117 or alert CSC Security. The WIAA will have trainers on duty at all sessions. Their role is to deal with injuries that occur during the tournament. Our athletic trainers will not be available, nor is there a supply of tape, for preventive taping. If you need padding or tape for preventive reasons, bring a small container you can hold or leave in your wrestler s bag. You will not be allowed to place such items on the seats next to you in the participants area. (Small fanny packs work great for this purpose.) 2

WEIGH-INS Door Opens for All weigh-ins conclude Coaches/Wrestlers following 285 Thursday, February 22 Division 1 12:30 p.m. *Begins at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, February 22 Divisions 2 and 3 ** *Begins at 5:00 p.m. Friday, February 23 All Divisions 1, 2, & 3 (1 lb. over Thursday) 7:30 a.m. Begins at 8:30 a.m. (D1) Begins at 9 a.m. (D2 & 3) Saturday, February 24 All Divisions (1 lb. over previous weigh-in) 7:30 a.m. Begins at 8:30 a.m. * Coaches are reminded to have any skin conditions examined/treated in advance of the State Tournament. WIAA Tournament Medical Staff will make final determinations on all skin conditions at the tournament. ** ALL D2 and D3 wrestlers will weigh-in Thursday - including sectional champions. Note: Evening sessions doors open to wrestlers and coaches one hour and 30 minutes prior to competition - Friday 5:30 p.m. and Saturday 3:30 p.m. The Kohl Center will provide an expanded area in the lower level to accommodate more wrestlers and ease the congestion. Please direct your athletes away from weigh-in areas after they ve weighed-in. V. LOCKERS AND SHOWERS A. The University will not have lockers available this year. Please plan accordingly. B. A coat-check style service will be available for competitors duffel bags and back packs in the lower level. Though the bag check service will be staffed throughout the event, the WIAA and Kohl Center will not assume responsibility for lost or stolen articles. C. Shower facilities continue to be available for competitors in the weigh-in area. VI. WARM-UP PRIOR TO SESSION A. Only wrestlers will be allowed on competition mats during warm-ups. B. Coaches with proper credentials are welcome on the floor, but not on the mats. C. Additional space and warm-up mats will be available in the NORTH corridor (See Diagram p. 6). D. Only wrestlers actually competing in the session are to be on warm-up and competition mats. E. Coach credentials are limited to two - Third chair occupants are allowed on floor only when wrestler is competing. VII. ORDER OF COMPETITION Next Up, On Deck, In the hole A. All weight classes will proceed in consecutive order, 106 to 285. Wrestlers identified as being Next Up, will compete on the first available mat assigned to their respective division. B. All available mats will have an assigned bout to begin each session. C. Wrestlers who will compete after the initial bouts will be identified by the PA as Next Up, On Deck or In the hole (along with wrestler s name/school/division). Note: Info will also be listed on Jumbotron. VIII. REPORT TO STAGING AREA A. A small holding area on the main floor/east side, directly across from the tournament control/pa table will be identified as the staging area. (See Diagram. p. 6) B. This area will be for Next Up and On Deck wrestlers/coaches only. (We will always attempt to be two-deep in the staging area - in the event of a quick fall.) C. The official will direct your wrestler to the appropriate competition mat as quickly as it becomes available. BE READY. D. Wrestlers identified as In the hole remain in the tunnel areas, until they are called to On Deck status. E. When your wrestler is identified as either Next Up or On Deck, leave the tunnel area and report to the central staging area without delay. No more than TWO coaches are to accompany a wrestler to the bull pen. Note: Info will also be listed on Jumbotron. F. All other wrestlers warm-up in the area off the northeast or southeast corner of the floor. (The northwest tunnel area will be designated as the cheerleader staging area.) 3

All weight classes wrestled in consecutive order 106 to 285. X. COACHES CHAIRS A. Two persons may accompany wrestler to staging and bullpen area. B. A third chair will be available for an additional coach or school/team photographer - during their wrestler s match only. (Proper string tag identification will be required). Note: The additional, 3rd chair string tag included in your packet allows a 3rd person onto the main floor at matside only during your wrestlers competition. This tag is not good for admission or to access bull pen or ground levels. C. No tripods allowed. D. Do not move coaches chairs from the location you find them in! XI. KOHL CENTER ANNOUNCEMENTS A. We will utilize two announcers. One announcer will be communicating next bouts. The other will be announcing results. B. The public-address system will be in continuous use. C. Be certain you make arrangements regarding when and where you will meet your wrestlers to leave. Do not rely on use of public-address system to make such arrangements. XII. ITEMS TO PASS ON TO OTHERS IN YOUR SCHOOL Note: The Kohl Center is cleared following each session. There is no smoking in the venue. A. CHEERLEADER INFORMATION Cheerleaders and advisors must purchase a ticket to enter the Kohl Center. Friday and Saturday nights may be sold out. Plan accordingly!!! Cheerleaders enter Kohl Center through Gate B. Remember all bags will be subject to search refer to Kohl Center carry-in policy. Bags may be no larger than 8.5 x 11. Wrestling cheerleaders will be allowed to bring in their pillows. Normal cheering props (small hand-held pennants, banners, pom-pons) will be allowed. Cheer Advisors Pick up credential (one per school) at Guest Services adjacent to Section 119. Cheerleaders will be required to sit in their ticketed seats. They will be allowed into Section 128, Row 1-3 when their 4

5 2018 STATE INDIVIDUAL WRESTLING INFORMATION wrestler is called to the holding area. They will be allowed into the staging area when their wrestler is in the hole. Cheerleaders must be in uniform. Only a pillow and props will be allowed downstairs. Cheerleader advisors are responsible for all articles. B. SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHER Each team that qualifies an individual for the State Tournament is permitted ONE School Photographer credential. (Co-op teams only receive one.) School Photography areas are located at each mat. Cheering at mat areas by photographers is unprofessional and will not be tolerated. Violators will have their credentials revoked and be escorted out of the mat area by WIAA or security personnel. School Photography credentials are not intended for coaches; former coaches; or family and friends of participants, coaches or school administrators. Those in possession of this credential: 1. Must only use general seating access areas to enter the floor/mat area 2. Must remain in the third chair or on the carpeted areas alongside the mats in a seated position not to obstruct views of the scoreboards during their respective match 3. Must vacate the mat/floor area immediate following the respective school s match 4. Do not have access to other media-only access areas Commercial use of photos and images taken with a School Photographer pass is strictly prohibited. Video or still images may not be sold, rented, loaned, transmitted on the Web site or shared with other schools or any entity or media outlet with intent to transmit or commercialize. Any commercial sponsorship or commercial use of the video is prohibited. Violation of this policy will subject the school or individual to the photo license, video and transmission rights fees. Only schools of competitors may receive a School Photographer credential to photograph State Tournament events for their school s usage in yearbooks, school newspaper or other school functions. A ticket must be purchased, and a signed letter from school administration on school letterhead that identifies the school photographer must accompany the individual when attempting to obtain a School Photographer credential at Guest Services on the first concourse of the Kohl Center. (Section 119) A school which designates any outside entity for its School Photographer pass forfeits the right to send its own photographer to the State Tournament and is responsible for violations of the School Photography pass policies regarding the commercial use of images. C. SPECTATOR ADMISSION There is no re-entry during a session. Spectators will be allowed in the building beginning one hour before each session. *Note: Length of Session 2 may result in a delay of doors opening for Session 3. Face/Body Paint: Remind your student fans, face/body paint is NOT allowed in the Kohl Center. Children under the age of two may be admitted at no charge. The child will not receive a ticket and will be expected to sit in the lap of a parent or guardian during the entire session. Children two years old and up will need a regular ticket for admittance. D. PARKING FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES 1. There are disabled parking spaces available on a first come basis in Lot 48. Cost is $8 - must pay to re-enter. 2. Drop off for the disabled is in front of the Kohl Center on Dayton Street. 3. When dropping off in front of the Kohl Center, if needed, you can call University of Wisconsin Guest Services five minutes before arriving at Guest Services will meet the disabled patron with a wheelchair, they will take them into the building and to their seating area. The disabled patron cannot keep the wheelchair. If the patron wishes to be picked up with a wheelchair after the session, tell Guest Services at the time of drop off, they will come back. XII. TEAM PRACTICE - Reminder For those teams qualifying for the State Team Tournament: Schools are responsible for their own practice arrangements. The Kohl Center and UW Wrestling room are not available for team practices. 5

Some are available only certain times. The sign at the lot entrance lists restrictions. If you ignore these, your car could be ticketed and/or towed away. We encourage you to walk or use the hotel shuttle if you are staying in the area. You should try to use only the lots shown on the map above when available per the lot entrance signs. Street parking, your only option other than the shuttle mentioned below if the lots are full, will probably be several blocks from the Kohl Center. Plan accordingly as it may take a while to locate parking and then walk to the Kohl Center. The Kohl Center will offer a shuttle from the Alliant Energy Center. The cost is $7 per vehicle and $21 per bus to park and the shuttle ride is $10/3-day pass per person, $5 per person round trip or $3 per person one way in cash or make check payable to Alliant Energy Center. The shuttle runs every 20 minutes. It will drop off and pick up in front of the Kohl Center. The pick up/drop off point at the Alliant Energy Center is directly across from Pavilion 2 on Fairgrounds Drive. On-site signage will direct you to the appropriate lot. RIDE THE SHUTTLE FOR HASSLE FREE PARKING IN DOWNTOWN TRAFFIC. The shuttle will run Thursday noon, Friday 7 a.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. until 1 hour after the last match each day. Possible University parking lots available include the following: a. The City of Madison State Street Campus Ramp is $15 per day. b. Lot 91- Available after 5 p.m. $8 must pay to re-enter. c. Lot 46 - Available for the entire tournament based on availability. $8 must pay to re-enter. e. Lot 29 - Available after 5 p.m. $8 must pay to re-enter. f. Lot 83 - Available based on availability. $8 must pay to re-enter. g. If all lots are full, give consideration to using the Alliant Energy Center Shuttle or the only option will be street parking. Many streets in Madison have restrictions allowing only a maximum of two hours of parking. Plan accordingly and read the signs posted on the streets. Kohl Center Entrance All coaches and contestants must use Contestant Entry (Dayton Street) for early admission. 8

9 To Verona Team And/Or Spectator Buses 1. Each school will be allowed to park their team/spectator buses (no vans or cars) on Frances Street (if space is available). Schools bringing buses should notify the WIAA office by Wednesday. 2. Park temporarily in the cut out area in front of the Kohl Center, off Dayton Street. A security officer will get on the bus to assist you to proceed to Frances Street where you will unload and load spectators. Security officers will assist you in parking or other questions associated with the event. 3. After stopping in the cut out area on Dayton Street, you will be directed to proceed to Bedford Street, turn right, proceed to Mifflin Street, and turn right again. Drive through Lot 91 onto Frances Street and unload. There will be security officers positioned at each corner to assist. 4. Bus drivers must have a ticket to gain admission to the Kohl Center. 5. Buses will reload spectators on Frances Street. Remember to tell your fans when and where they will be picked up. 6. There is no parking allowed on Dayton Street. 7. If no space is available on Frances Street proceed to Alliant Energy Center (1919 Alliant Energy Center Way, Madison 53713) and park at the north end of Alliant Energy Center. The cost to park at the Alliant Energy Center is $21 per bus in cash or make check payable to Alliant Energy Center. Shuttle service back to the Kohl Center runs every 20 minutes. The cost of the shuttle is $10/3-day pass per person, $5 per person, round trip or $3 per person one way. For additional information see parking section on page 8.
