3 2017 CIYC Summer Kick Off Welcome to the 2017 CIYC SKO A Celtic Festival! The ancient Celts prided themselves on their feastings. Social events with ritualistic ceremonies allowed participants to indulge their love of eating, drinking, and sport. These feasts were often rowdy which makes A Celtic Festival the perfect title and theme for the SKO. I welcome you with an old Gaelic saying: An té a bhíónn siúlach, bíonn scéalach. Pronounced: On tay a vee-on shoo-loch(k), bee-on skay-loch(k) Or loosely transalated as: He who travels has stories to tell. 4 Friday June 16, 2017 When you arrive at Cobb Island announce your arrival on Channel 72 and ask for the Summer Kick Off Dock Master. Our Dock Master will direct you to your slip or anchorage. The CIYC Dock Master, Roger Fajans, and the marina personnel are currently scheduled to welcome you to The Emerald Isle of Cobb and assist you with docking. The radios will be monitored from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Please make every effort to be in your slip by 4:30 p.m. Check-In: 3:30-4:00 p.m. For your convenience, welcome packages will be available for pick-up at The Scuttlebutt located at Neale Sound Drive on Friday afternoon prior to Captain s Hour. For late arrivals in need of their welcome packages, please call Pam Simpson, the CIYC Treasurer, at CAPTAIN S HOUR: 4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Commodore Stine and the CIYC Bridge will welcome all of our guests at the The Scuttlebutt lounge located at Neale Sound Drive. Captain s Hour is your official welcome to Cobb Island and the start of the Cobb Island Yacht Club s Summer Kick Off. Dress is casual all weekend unless you intend to go regimental. (Cash Bar) Dinner - On your Own Cobb Island is fortunate to have four restaurants all within walking distance of our marinas. Captain John s, Shymanskys, The Scuttlebutt, and The Rivah. Please look in your welcome packages for menus and dinner specials this evening. 7:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. Musicfest featuring The Parrot Bay Trio Location: Neale Sound Drive at The Scuttlebutt To get the weekend started The Parrot Bay Trio will provide some ceoil agus craic. Parrot Heads are welcome! As an added attraction, having just issued their newest CD, two members of The Duke Brothers Band are scheduled to be on Cobb Island this evening to join in for some savage craic. 4

5 Saturday June 17, :45 a.m. -11:15 a.m. The CIYC Highland Games Location: Neale Sound Drive on the Highlands Green. See the Cobb Island map on the last page of this program. THE COBB ISLAND HIGHLAND GAMES What do you get when you bring all of the PRYCA Clans together on Cobb Island?.The Cobb Island Highland Games of course. The Highland Games are as iconically Scottish as bagpipes, kilts and whisky - all of which are featured heavily at any gathering. The games are also noted for their unique sporting and athletic events, many of which involve throwing and lifting. These include the Putting of the Shot, tug-o-war, the caber toss and hammer throw - collectively known as heavy events. The PRYCA clans, who are all known as fierce competitors, will gather their clans to compete in the Cobb Island Yacht Club Highland Games. The games will include traditional Scottish games such as The Cabor Toss, The Putting of the Shot, THE BAILING OF THE YACHT, A Clan Scottish Dance Contest, and of course GOAT HERDING. Helping with the morning s Highland Games will be our own Highland Games Barista serving Coffee, Blue Dyer Distillary to help us make the coffee Irish, and many other surprises. The Celtic Society of Southern Maryland will also teach the traditional method of Kilt Wrapping. The morning entertainment will be the Cobbonite Clan s favorite Celtic Band DRAGONFYRE. 5

6 DragonFyre Think of Celtic music and you think of pints of beer, pubs, and good times. The Celtic music of DragonFyre will entertain you with jigs, reels, and ballads of war, women, and whiskey. Oh, and don t let me forget Bagpipes. DragonFyre will bring a smile to your face, pint to your lips, and dance to your step. Everyone becomes part of the show and you ll have to try to not have fun. David Rich David has played venues such as the Kennedy Center, The Celtic Classic in Bethlehem, PA, and festivals throughout the United States. He plays guitar, bass, mandolin, whistle, as well as performs vocals. In addition to being a member of DragonFyre, David organizes a Celtic music session which meets each month in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Deborah Wenrich Deborah plays the fiddle and accordion and is one of the band s vocalists. She has played at The Kennedy Center (2009), Riverside Dinner Theater's Johnny Cash-Ring of Fire Show (2013), Matthew Rhys Star of the television series, The American- 40th Birthday Party as well as festivals throughout the East Coast and the Midwest. Bob Roser Bob is the band s bagpiper. He has played with the Washington Scottish Pipe Band, the Mary Washington Eagle Pipe Band and was a Piper for the Munich Germany Scottish Society. Playing the highland pipes, ceilidh pipes and small pipes he has performed at venues such as the Kennedy Center, the North American Festival of Wales, and the Celtic Nations Heritage Festival in Lake Charles, Louisiana. James Brown James is a guitarist, Bodhran player and vocalist who has performed with Celtic bands for ten years. He has written many original Celtic ballads and has rearranged traditional melodies with a country flair and others with modern flourishes. James take pride in representing both his Southern heritage as well as a Scottish family heritage. Amy Meyer Amy has been playing Celtic music on the harp for more than 20 years. Her music has been broadcast live on PBS and FOX29 News, and she has performed at Longwood Gardens (PA), as well as several Celtic festivals throughout the Northeast. Amy is a 2-time winner of the Mid-Atlantic regional Fleadh Cheoil na héireann (Irish music competition) and has competed in the all-ireland Fleadh. 6

7 12:00 p.m. 12:40 p.m. Cindy Roser The Welsh Teller Location: Location: Neale Sound Drive at The Rivah When Cindy was a child she was fascinated by the stories she heard. She enjoyed telling stories herself and hoped to be a storyteller when she grew up. Now, many years later, Cindy is an accomplished teller of tales based on the vast repertoire of Welsh and other Celtic stories. Cindy has a BA degree in speech and drama and is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and the Virginia Storytelling Alliance. Cindy was the winner of both the 1rst Prize for Storytelling and 1rst Prize for Poetry Recitation in English at the 2005 and 2007 North American Festival of Wales, Eisteddfod competition. 12:40 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Celtic Tree of Life Painting Location: Neale Sound Drive at The Rivah Local internationally known artist, Vicki Markel, will lead you as you paint your own Scottish Tree of Life. Vicki achieved notoriety around the world when she was commissioned to create a painting for Pope Francis that now hangs in the Vatican. There is a participation fee of $25 that will include your own canvas, paints, and supplies. This event is strictly limited to 27 participants. 7

8 2:15 p.m.-3:30 p.m. A Taste of Scotland Location: Neale Sound Drive at the Scuttlebutt Carla Jackson, President of The Celtic Society of Southern Maryland, will lead us through a Whiskey and Scotch tasting tour of the old country. Carla has spent much of her life actively involved in her ancestral Scottish Clan, Clan Donald, and various other Scottish organizations. Growing up she had been brought up with stories of her MacAlister/MacDonald roots which trace from Boston back through New Brunswick to Kintyre and Skye. CSSM runs year-round programming with concerts, dinners and workshops, as well as staging the largest single-day games in the Mid-East, the Southern Maryland Celtic Festival and Highland Games. Carla helped run the Celtic Arts and Education Tent each year at the Southern Maryland Games. In 2013 Carla was elected President of CSSM, a capacity in which she is still serving. In 2013 Carla also served Clan Donald Mid East as the Treasurer for the 2013 Clan Donald Annual General Meeting in Williamsburg, VA.
