EVENTS Minnesota Tartan Day This is the year you and your family members want to be sure to plan to take part in the Tartan Day celebration planned for the steps of the state capitol Saturday, March 31 starting at 3:00 p.m. If you've never been with us before, this is the year! March 31, 2012 Tartan Day Capitol Event Minnesota State Capitol The Tartan Day State Capitol event will feature a procession of Scottish Clans with their banners up to the steps of the Capitol, drummers, Highland dancers, historical Scottish regiment re-enactors and of course, bagpipes. presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Don Cogswell, President of the Minnesota Scottish Fair and Highland Games Board. 2:30pm - Gather at the Veteran's Service monument and assemble for procession up the Mall. Bring your tartan flag and march with us. 3:00pm - Process up the Mall to the Capitol steps for the Tartan Day program featuring Clans, Dancing, Music and the presentation of the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award. 4:30pm - Gather for an early supper at O'Gara's with music by Laura MacKenzie and Ross Sutter. 8:00pm - Macalester Pipe Band Concert at the Celtic Junction. The dates in April are Saturday, April 7 and Saturday, April 21. The fun starts at 3 pm and goes to about 6. The final raffle will take place on May 5th, which is Maifest at the Glockenspiel as well. A Ceilidh Celebration in honor of National Tartan Day In honor of National Tartan Day, the Duluth Scottish Heritage Association and Carmody's Irish Pub, 308 E. Superior Street, Duluth, MN., invite you to A Ceilidh Celebration on Friday, April 13th, 2012 from 6-9 pm, featuring Scottish and Irish Music and Merriment. Kilts and other Scottish and Irish Attire encouraged (but not required)! ALL ARE WELCOME, 21 and over. No Cover Charge. 3 The Kansas City-based group, The Elders, return to Hopkins Center for the Arts to close out the Take Five Tuesday series with their high energy, rocking take on the Celtic musical tradition. For nearly 30 years, Ross Sutter has impacted Minnesota through his work with schools and cultural organizations. His school residencies are a lively excursion into diverse cultures, with an emphasis on student involvement. His influence has spread out from his home on Minneapolis Nicollet Island to communities large and small throughout Minnesota as well as elsewhere in the U.S. and in Europe. Sutter plays an array of folk instruments guitar, bodhran, button accordion, dulcimer, bones but is perhaps best known for his singular baritone voice, performing renditions of Irish, Scottish, Scandinavian, and American traditional and popular songs. Sutter nurtures a passion for the arts in schools and cultural organizations with his engaging performances and long-term residencies. Sutter has performed on radio, television and at festivals, and works regularly in schools teaching the songs and folk dances that he has collected over the years. His rapport with children is extraordinary, but he also possesses the unique ability to thoroughly entertain the adults in the audience as well. His work is featured on the recordings Walking on Air, Up the Raw, Crossing the Shannon, Hunger No More, Songs By Heart, Over the Water, Ye Banks and Braes, and on his popular children s CD, Mama Will You Buy Me a Banana?

4 Don Cogswell to be given 10th Annual Tartan Day Lifetime Achievement Award By a near unanimous vote, members of the Minnesota Tartan Day Cooperative planning group chose Don Cogswell to receive the tenth annual Lifetime Achievement Award. The award will be presented during the Tartan Day celebration on the steps of the state capitol on Saturday, March 31 beginning at 3:00 p.m. Don Cogswell is perhaps best known as the person who single-handedly saved the Minnesota Scottish Fair and Highland Games for the Scottish community of Minnesota. The number of hours to say nothing of personal dollars Don has poured into the MSFHG is incalculable, his devotion has been unwavering. Our debt to Don is beyond measure because without him and his dedication, there simply would be no Scottish Fair in Minnesota. Don's involvement in the Scottish community did not begin with the Scottish Fair. He served for many years as president of the Minnesota Celtic and Scottish Dance Association. He made sure we had Highland Dancers for several of the early years of our Tartan Day celebrations. In some circles he is better known as Kira Cogswell's dad. Kira was for many years a champion Highland Dancer and is now the proud mom of Don and his wife Karyl's grandchildren.
