3 Irish Fair of Minnesota Join the Irish on the banks of the Mississippi River for a three-day celebration of Irish heritage with music, dance, family activities and good craic. Since 2001, beautiful Harriet Island Regional Park in downtown St. Paul has hosted the Irish Fair. The festival is recognized as one of the most family-friendly events in the Twin Cities, one of the most authentic Irish festivals nationwide and an amazingly great time by the nearly 100,000 people who attended last year s festival. Come by, listen to the music, watch the dancers and even enjoy a pint or two! All the activities and events at the Fair are completely FREE. Bush Lake Beach 9140 E Bush Lake Rd Bloomington, MN Scottish (Genealogy) Interest Group Meeting Hello Fellow Scots, Absolutely everyone is welcome at our next meeting, scheduled for Saturday, September 17th, at the Minnesota Genealogical Society, in Room 218, off the Library. We will start at 10 a.m. and could continue until 1 p.m. We will have delicious jelly croissants to go with whatever drink you might bring, however, coffee will also be available. We welcome one of our own SIG members, Beth Mullinax, who has agreed to speak on the History of the Scots-Irish. She has vast experience on this subject and on the Irish people as well. What persuaded the Scots to leave the Scottish homeland and relocate to (Northern) Ireland, and during what periods did they make the journey? What was the promise, or the pressure, that compelled them to go? What did they find when they arrived in Northern Ireland? I think many of us have some idea what they found in Northern Ireland, and many were disappointed. What was the Siege of Londonderry and why did it happen?? Did some of the Scots who arrived in Ireland get caught in the potato famine, and what part did they play? At what point did the Scots begin to leave Ireland and travel to the New World, or to other parts of the world? Many of these questions will likely be part of the presentation, when we welcome Beth to address the group. I am expecting this to be a very popular event. A nominal donation of $5.00 will be collected from each participant to help cover copying and other administrative costs for the SIG. Please come to enjoy the speaking engagement, but then plan to stay for some computer research of
4 your own family. There will be plenty of time, and plenty of help, if you can stay later and continue your own family projects. We will have specialists available to help you on the computer searches. For those who stay later to spend time in the Library, there will be a one day charge of $10.00 for use the library and the computers. (The $10.00 will be waived if you become, or are already, a member the Minnesota Genealogical Society.) Please let me know if you will be there. You can send me an , or leave a message on my phone. If more than 14 people come, we may need to move to a larger room (so I need to know the numbers attending, as soon as possible). For the Love of Scotland John McKeen (651) Craig Ferguson performs at Mystic Lake Scottish Entertainer, Craig Ferguson is coming to Mystic Lake September 25th, 7:00pm. Tickets are on sale now. Craig Ferguson entered the world of late night comedy following a diverse and eclectic career that encompasses film, television and the stage. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Ferguson got his start in the entertainment industry as a drummer for some of the worst punk bands in the U. Mystic Lake Casino 2400 Mystic Lake Blvd. Prior Lake, MN NEWS LOST, MISPLACED, MISSING My beautiful Humphrey tartan (tan, green, white) silk scarf woven for me by Nola Waters of St. Croix Weaving. I have had it for Kirkin' o' the Tartans at the Scottish Ramble and also at the DSHA event each November. Suddenly, I don't have it any more and I am devastated. Anyone who may have collected tartans at those events and may not recognize that tartan, and finds they have tartans "left over," please let me know. One of those "left overs" could be my missing Humphrey tartan scarf. Thanks, Babs Humphrey babsfayth@aol.com News from the Hart School of Highland Dance The Hart School of Highland Dance has 4 dancers that qualified to go to the National Scottish Highland Dance Championships to be held July 21-24th in Spokane WA. Congratulations and Good luck! News from the St. Andrew s Society On June 18, we had our Annual General Meeting at the home of JoAnn and Roger Wahl in Prior Lake. The weather did not cooperate and we had to have our meeting inside rather than on the deck overlooking the lake. Nevertheless, a good meeting and discussion was held. Mac MacPherson was reelected president for another 2 year term. Jack MacKinnon and Tom MacDougall were also reelected as secretary and treasurer respectively. Delegates at large on the Executive Committee were also elected and Eileen Stewart, Phil Sutherland, and Cathy Juenemann were each elected to one year terms, with one spot still open. New members of the St. Andrew's Board of Governors are Jack MacMillan, Lorie Croft and Stuart Hoarn. They will serve along with current members, Neil Johnson, Angie Schwartz, and Liz Michaelson. Congratulations and thanks to all the new executive committee and Board members. And many thanks to JoAnn and Roger for hosting a wonderful get-together. Congratulations to the Minnesota Police Pipe Band! The MPPB Grade 3 band took home first place honors and the Midwest Grade 3 Championship at the Illinois St. Andrews Highland Games on June 18. First place solo piping awards went to Abby Peterson for Grade 3 Piobaireachd and Alex Peterson for Grade 4 2/4 March.
