It is important to our institution that our ATCs maintain the appropriate credentialing and obtain continuing education credit by attending meetings. The Tennessee Athletic Trainers Society (TATS) presented the 2010 Annual Meeting & Symposium on January 16th 17th in Nashville. Vanderbilt was well represented as 8 of our faculty and staff presented on various topics. Athletic Trainers: Merideth Cooper: Personal & Professional Growth Barbara Edwards: Olympic Training Center Jeanie Neumeyer: Musculoskelatal Issues in Mountain Biking Jasper Richardson: Medical Coverage of Martial Arts Physicians: Dr. Carey: Shoulder Injuries in Skeletally Immature Athletes Dr. Diamond: Sports Medicine for the Aging Athlete Dr. Gregory: Pre-Participation Physical Red Flags Dr. Rummo: Ice Hockey Injuries The TATS Meeting had a record high attendance this year at 165 people, of which 20 were Vanderbilt athletic trainers. Thank you for coming out to support your colleagues and hopefully learn new things. Thank you to Tina Cole for her help in coordinating this year s meeting. Congratulations also go to Tina as she was nominated to lead a task force to review the by-laws. And finally, thank you to the ATCs and physicians who presented at the meeting. 1
2 VOI Clinic ATCs We have started the new year off with the celebration of new marriages, new babies, and exciting announcements. Our athletic trainers continue to provide excellent patient care as clinic volume increases. Our newest endeavour centers around the new CSI Program. No, we are not investigating crime scenes Cool Springs ATCs We would like to congratulate Amanda Donohoe on the birth of their first child, Kennedy Ann. Kennedy was born January 12, 2010, 7lbs 6oz!! Also, Happy Belated Birthday to Amanda!! She had her birthday on New Years Day!! We wish Amanda and her family all 2 the best and look forward to seeing her when she returns in mid-march. Matt Yampolsky recently completed Level 1 of the Titleist Performance Institute s, Certified Golf Fitness Instructor. He will continue with the certification process which includes Level 2 and Level 3. The focus will be on the Medical Professional as it applies to golf rehabilitation. Matt and Jasper Richardson, who also completed Level 1, will be working on a golf rehabilitation program. They are hopeful in starting a program in the near future in Franklin. but we are gathering clinicians from all disciplines for a monthly Clinical Skills In- Service. The goal of this new initiative is to build a stronger bridge and increase clinical skills among all disciplines in the clinic for more positive patient outcomes. Coordinators will be asking those who have attended workshops, conferences, or gained new certifications to share that knowledge with co-workers. Some of the presentations will be centered around understanding the role and scope of practice of clinicians in our practice environment Physical therapists, Athletic Trainers, and Occupational Therapists. Tina Cole completed her HKC (Hardstyle Kettlebell Certification) and continues to implement these new skills into her patient care. We are also thrilled to have Anne Louise McDonald back in clinic.
3 Belmont University The Belmont men s basketball team took a road trip to Lawrence, Kansas in late December to take on the then ranked #1 Kansas Jayhawks. The Bruins played a great first half of basketball, but the Jayhawks pulled away in the second half. Paul Malloy stated that it was the best college basketball atmosphere that he has had the pleasure to experience. The Belmont University Cheerleading squad is heading to Orlando, Florida to compete at the UCA Nationals competition. The have worked very hard to perfect their routine and we wish them the best of luck. Kelly Bachus and Megan Goerlinger attended the Tennessee Athletic Trainer s Society s Annual Meeting. Several of the VSM doctors and staff gave presentations. A special thanks to everyone who represented Vanderbilt Orthopaedics. Belmont Univesity hosted Vanderbilt Sports Medicine Appreciation night on January 21st during the Belmont basketball games against Campbell University. The night included a special dinner and on-court presentation for our sports medicine team. Our athletic trainers and team physicians were very thankful and enjoyed the night. We would like to say thank you to Dr. Carey. We have kept him pretty busy so far this Winter and we really appreciate his efforts and willingness to go the extra mile for Belmont athletics. Vanderbilt University As 2009 came to a close, the Vanderbilt Athletic Training room staff embraced the spirit of the holidays with the Salvation Army s Angel Tree program. We thoroughly enjoyed helping many grateful families while spreading holiday cheer Vanderbiltstyle (matching reindeer antlers included). Our community outreach continues in 2010 as we get set to volunteer at the Nashville Ronald McDonald House in February. On the academic side, this spring will mark the completion of both, twoyear CQI projects focusing on injury prevention in the collegiate athlete population. Preventative screening and training programs for the lower extremity have been successfully implemented with our Women s Basketball, Soccer, and Lacrosse teams by Michele Loftis, Sara Melby, and Daniel MacLea while Chris Ham has had continued success focusing on the upper extremity with Baseball. 3
4 High School Outreach Outreach is bustling with new ideas and upcoming programs kicks off our CPR/AED Initiative to certify and educate community coaches and administrators on the importance of CPR/AED Certification and AED Access within the schools. This initiative kicked off on January 20th at the bi-annual Metro-Nashville Athletic Directors meeting where Dr. Hannah presented a lecture on suddencardiac death in athletes. Mitch Bellamy, Jennifer Reist, and the Special Events Management Team are also developing VOI Fitness Center The Orthopaedic Fitness Center is busy as we start the new year. There has been a large number of new members joining over the last few months and it has kept all of our Athletic Trainers very busy building programs and performing orientations. To keep up with the demands of our members, our 4 First Aid Provided by: a CPR/AED certification program that will be implemented within the Metro-Nashville High Schools during teacher in-service days starting this Spring. Teresa Pritchett is in the process of working with Dr. Hannah to redesign our Emergency Action Plans for each of our VSM covered High Schools. We intend to not only get these posted at the high schools, but also begin a mandatory review with the coaches at each school prior to the 2010 Football season. Jennifer Reist is in the process of collecting ideas and 2010 information for the upcoming National Athletic Trainers Month in staff has come up with ways to meet their needs through continuing education and program development. Jasper Richardson completed his Level I certification from the Titleist Performance Institute. Jasper will use what he learned to develop a golf injury prevention and performance program. Using functional testing and looking at an individual s swing, Jasper will find imbalances that can be corrected to help improve a golfer s performance by reducing their risk of injury. March. Our team is thrilled that this year s theme is Sports Safety is a Team Effort, because it reflects our Team attitude for providing care. If you are interested in helping develop our AT Month strategy please Jennifer at Jennifer.y.holcomb@vanderbilt.edu. Megan Lawrence noticed there was a lack of information in the NATA News for our district and therefore created and submitted a short article about the great things Vanderbilt Sports Medicine is doing. You can find her submission in the District Nine update in the January NATA News. Finally, Vanderbilt Sports Medicine will be inducted into the Metro Nashville Coaches Association Basketball hall of fame this spring! Congratulations to all of our Outreach Athletic Trainers for making Sports Medicine an excellent experience for our coaches and athletes! Scott Cooper and Sean Richard completed their Functional Movement Screen certification and are now FMS Specialist certified. This will add another program and outcome measurement to our fitness center programs. We are also in the midst of hiring to replace two positions in the fitness center to replace Mark Snow and Staci Savorias.
