2 Austin Regional Spelling Bee Makes Its Debut in March 2018 The West Austin Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to produce the first-ever Austin Regional Spelling Bee on March 25, 2018! The event, held as part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee program, will feature 50 of the region s best and brightest student spellers. The winner and his/her family will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals in Washington DC in May 2018, joining the competition on the ESPN televised event. Austin Regional Spelling Bee Key Facts Date: Sunday, March 25th, 2018 Broadcast Date: TBD Location: Zach Theatre Topfer Theatre, Austin, TX The Austin regional spelling bee is open to 4th-8th grade students in home based, private, public and charter schools. The Austin event will feature student winners from local competitions in 10 participating counties and surrounding the city of Austin. Over 600 schools in 10 Austin area counties are participating in this year s Austin Regional Spelling Bee program. In previous years, winners from these counties were required to travel to Houston in order to participate in a Regional Bee. Prior to 2018, Austin was the largest US city to not hosting a regional Bee. Inspiration to host the bee was provided by 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee co-champion and Austin-native, Nihar Janga and family. This event is produced by the West Austin Chamber of Commerce, a 7 year old chamber dedicated to advancing business, education and communities within the West Austin area. The Scripps Spelling Bee program begins in classrooms around the country and progresses to cafeterias, auditoriums and community centers delighting friends, family, communities and sponsors alike along the way. If you ve ever witnessed the amazing performances of the ESPNbroadcast National Spelling Bee, you understand how truly exceptional these children are. This Scripps National Spelling Bee program has touched millions of students over time and it continues to grow in popularity and participation each year. Besides providing entertainment to those watching, participation in the Spelling Bee program results in many benefits for the child, family, school and the community. Children learn not only memorization of words but grammar, vocabulary and components of speech/language that goes well beyond their bee event. Students gain social skills and confidence with healthy competition and improve their cognitive learning skills. They also learn life lessons in winning, losing, hard work and dedication. In previous years, Austin-area students participated in this incredible program through the Houston Public Media sponsorship, one of the largest programs in the country. The West Austin Chamber is thrilled to now provide a program where Austin s top spellers can compete closer to home. It is our goal to increase the awareness of and participation in the bee throughout our 10 county region. The winner of our bee will be featured in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in DC this Spring Scripps National Spelling Bee co-champion and Austin-native, Nihar Janga was the inspiration for us to bring the Bee closer to home. His voice echoes so many of the spellers and parents that we speak to: This is a dream come true for many Austin area kids. I am very happy that an Austin champion can now go to Scripps Nationals directly.
