1 ELECTRIC, STEAM AND SAIL THE MARITIME MODELERS NEWSLETTER THIS ISSUE SIZE IS 314 MBS HAPPY HALLOWEEN! North 4 Spruce Via. Anaheim, California West VOLUME: 4 OCTOBER Y2K+12 ISSUE: SHIPS OFFICERS Captain/Newsletter Publisher: Bob Tiscareno (562) Executive Officer: Jim Shultz (562) Secretary: Gene Sauter (626) Treasurer: Armando Leriget (714) Maritime Modelers OCTOBER 2012 BOAT OF THE MONTH Maritime Modelers is proud to announce this month s selection for Boat of the month. This month s honor goes to Bob Tiscareno for this beautiful fishing boat that he recently purchased from Warren Speilmann. Although the boat was perfect, Bob thought that it needed a new paint job, and proceeded to do so. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

2 SEPTEMBER BOAT OF THE MONTH CONTNUED The color scheme that Bob picked was a bright white, with red trim. compliments the boat that was already a really great looking vessel. This color combination really Bob replaced the front windshield that was a little worn with new plastic, and also replaced the other windows with new plastic sheets. Bob also added an American flag mounted on an extension to the mast, a life raft container, fishing nets, and net rollers. Bob later plans to add a roller assembly, and small boat with a prop protector that would be used to aid in the retrieving of the nets. Check out the before and after shots of the boat below as it was, and how it is now. Pictured Above Left; is Bob s boat as it looked when he purchased it from Warren, and after. A MESSAGE FROM THE BRIDGE HOSPITAL! Hello Everyone, Your probably wondering why the above says A MESSAGE FROM THE BRIDGE HOSPITAL! Several days before this newsletter was finished, I was walking home from a friends house, when that s when it hit. I was bent over in excruciating pain, and went to my friends house (Armando Leriget), who took me to the hospital at my request.. After several tests, it was determined that I had acute appendicitis.

3 I was schedule for emergency surgery for the next morning. The surgery was successful, and I was the father of a bouncing baby appendix. Healing is going well. Well, enough about me. It s really great to see so many of us enjoying our hobby, and even more, enjoying our friendships with each other. I hope all of you enjoyed the picture field trip of the U.S.S. Iowa (BB-61) that was included in the newsletter a month ago. Although seeing the photos was cool, you really need to take a ride to San Pedro, and visit the Iowa for yourself. It s really something to experience. There is a web site for the Iowa, which is A couple of years ago, we went on a field trip to the U.S.S. Midway in San Diego, and then later on in the year, we went on another field trip to the Maritime Museum in San Pedro. Maybe after the field trip, we can go have lunch or dinner at the Acapulco Restaurant that is located a short walk from the ship. Hope to all of you at the lake. Check out the flyer in this issue. Also, check out the future events page for more activities. Our member Paul Lau paid us a visit last month after going through open heart surgery. It felt so good to see that he is doing so well. Our thoughts are prayers will continue to go out to Paul, and his family for continued improvement of his recovery. This month and next there are a couple of events that you might want to attend. One is the regatta that is put on this month by The Inland Nautical Society. If you ve never attended a regatta, this is something that all model boat enthusiasts should attend. Inland Nautical Society always puts on a great event. Get there early, so that you can have one really great breakfast. The coffee isn t bad either. Several of our members won awards at the regatta. Read all about those who won, and even better check out the many photos that would be included in the article. Respectfully Yours..Captain Robert (Bob) Tiscareno M/M BOARD MEMBERS ADDRESSES CAPTAIN: Bob Tiscareno robertt92801@aol.com EXECUTIVE OFFICER: Jim Shultz N/A SECRETARY: Gene Sauter: N/A TREASURER: Armando Leriget: N/A NEWSLETTER PUBLISHER: Bob Tiscareno robertt92801@aol.com

10 Maritime Modelers would like to congratulate, the Inland Nautical Society for putting on yet another of their successful bi-yearly regattas. These events are looked forward to by many of those who attend. I can t imagine anything that would make these regattas more of a success than they already are. We would also like to thank those individuals who won awards for everything from the navigation course, and those who won awards in their categories, such as Military, Work Boat, and Pleasure. Those from the Maritime Modelers who won awards, a special pat on the back goes out to you all. To those of you who didn t win, you really should have, but there is always the next regatta in April. Can t wait until the next one! SOMETHING REALLY COOL! By: Bob Tiscareno

11 How many times have you wanted something exciting and different for your build, but just couldn t find it? Well this might help. I m building a replica of a small push barge that I saw one day in San Pedro. I was surfing the net, when I came across this company that manufactures, and carries die-cast models of diesel engines. I plan to build a fake engine room on my barge, and will have these engines in it, along with pipes, radiators, and anything else that is found in an engine room that I can find or build from scratch. 15 THE SPACE SHUTTLE ENDEAVOUR HAS COME HOME TO LOS ANGELES Digital Images By: Bob Tiscareno Space Shuttle Endeavour with 747 Wheels Up. Space Shuttle Endeavour with 747 Wheels Down. I along with many thousands, if not millions of people throughout the nation rose early out of their beds to welcome the shuttle Endeavour to it s new home at the California Science Center at Exposition Park in Los Angeles.

16 In my case, since I live in Anaheim, I drove my car to the Green line rail system in Norwalk, California and rode it to Aviation Boulevard near Los Angeles International Airport. I thought that this would be a terrific place to see the shuttle as it came to southern California, and get some terrific digital images of the shuttle. I think I succeeded by the images that I took. I wanted to share these images with my friends for their enjoyment as well. If you would like copies of these any many other of the images that I took, contact me, and I will make you copies. They should cost no more than $5 for all the prints. No! I m not making any money on these. It was about 12:30 p.m. when a shout was heard There it is! I looked up, and saw a faint image of the shuttle as it flew over the southern California mountains before making a turn to the west to make a pass over L.A.X. The shuttle made one low level pass over L.A.X. and then again turned east to make a pass over J.P.L., Long Beach, Huntington Beach, Disneyland, Orange County, and then onto it s final destination of L.A.X. The first pass was made with Wheels Up. The second pass was made also with Wheels Up. And then the final pass was made with Wheels Down. A loud cheer could be heard as the shuttle approached each and every time. That was nothing when the shuttle made it s final pass, and landed. People cheered even louder, and some even shared a tear or two, and then each and every vehicle that was parked in the parking lot where I was, sounded their horn in celebration. The shuttle will remain at L.A.X. for several weeks, where it will travel down the streets of Los Angeles to it s final stop at the California Museum of Science and Industry on October 12 th. I plan to be there also, and get some even closer shots of the Endeavour. It should be fairly easy, as the shuttle will be towed at a break-neck speed of 2 m.p.h. Yes! You heard me right! 2 m,p.h. The average person walks faster than that. Once the shuttle arrives at the Science Center, it will be towed into the newly constructed building, by a Toyota Tundra truck. Toyota plans to use this event for one really impressive commercial, showing the towing power of it s Tundra Truck. Once the shuttle is in the building it will be hoisted into the vertical position that it s in when it is about to be launched. This will be really something to see, as the shuttle is the size of a 737 airliner. I know that this article has nothing to do with model boating, but I thought you would like it. I hope you enjoy these pictures, as much as I do, and did taking them. Bob Club Dues Reminder! Please check with Bob Tiscareno to check on the status of your dues. Many of you have fallen behind, and the money helps with the running of the club, and it s events.
