THE MARITIME MODELERS NEWSLETTER THIS ISSUE SIZE IS 112 MB S HAPPY SAINT PADDY S DAY! ELECTRIC, STEAM AND SAIL North 4 Spruce Via. Anaheim, California West VOLUME: 4 MARCH Y2K+12 ISSUE: SHIPS OFFICERS Captain/Newsletter Publisher: Bob Tiscareno (562) Executive Officer: Jim Shultz (562) Secretary: Gene Sauter (626) Treasurer: Frank Milowicki (714) Maritime Modelers MARCH 2012 BOAT OF THE MONTH Maritime Modelers is proud to announce this month s selection for BOAT OF THE MONTH Maritime Modelers would like to congratulate member Armando Leriget for being chosen this month. Armando built this beautiful cabin cruiser from a Lindberg kit, and converted it to radio controlled For being a new member to the club, Armando has shown some great potential for becoming a master modeler.

MARCH 2012 BOAT OF THE MONTH CONTINUED Armando has only been a member of our club for just a few month s, but has acquired quite an extensive collection of boats, and ships. I first saw this boat several months ago, when it was still in the box. Armando has built several boats/ships. Some are scratch built, and others were kit s, and others are ready to run, but this one has got to be the crème de la crème. The colors on this boat, are just in one word Beautiful, and when it s on the water, it screams Look at me!. I wish that I had taken more digital images of this boat, but I didn t. If you should happen to see this boat at one of our meetings, you ll will see why it was chosen for Boat of the month. I for one cannot wait to see more of Armando s boats. Keep up the good work Armando!. ARG! MATEY S HERE BE A MESSAGE FROM YE CAPTAIN. Happy St. Patricks Day Hello everybody. I wanted to make this months message short and sweet, but due to the need to talk about several things, that is not going to happen. So grab a cold one. Put your feet up, and read. CAPTAIN BOB We have several things to talk about this month, and the first of those would be the up and coming elections for the officers of the club for the period. Many people have come forward to run for office, and others have been, shall we say Volunteered. Before I list the candidates, and the offices that they are seeking, I would like to thank those individuals who have held office for the period of Frank Milowicki has held the office of treasurer for more years than I m aware, so a great big thank-you goes out to him. Frank your help in running this club was, and will always be appreciated.

Second, I would like to thank Jim Shultz for running the office of Executive Officer. Jim also deserves a great big thank-you, especially for getting to the park at 4:00 a.m. on the days that we were holding our BBQ N BOATIN. If it were not for him, we might not have had the great location next to the lake for the event. Thanks for the help Jim. I really appreciated it. Now. Listed below are the candidates and the offices to which they are running. Captain; Bob Tiscareno, Executive Officer; Armando Leriget, Secretary; Gene Sauter, Treasurer; Ron De Simone, Newsletter Publisher; Bob Tiscareno. Everyone loves a good race, especially myself. So, just because someone is running for an office that you might have thought of running for, don t let that stop you. As we did the last election, ballots will be mailed out this week, and the election results will be announced at our second meeting this month. Please fill out the election ballot, and return it as soon as possible. A postage paid envelope will be included with the ballots for easy return to the club. There will also be a space available for you to write in a candidate s name if you so choose. Last election Captain Jack Sparrow got one vote, and Goofy got another. On a sad note, we at Maritime Modelers were sad to hear about the passing of Mike Dory s wife Barbara. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Dory family at this difficult time. Also my father Robert had gotten sick last month, and was rushed to the hospital, and was found to have prostate cancer. I m not taking this news very well, and I would appreciate your thoughts and prayers regarding my father. I have chosen not to tell him of his condition, because that would only make him worry about my brother and myself, and the time that he has left should not be a sad time. We have several events coming up this month and next. There will be a list of these activities listed in the Upcoming Events section of this newsletter. If you are looking for a good time, and I m not talking about the writing on the bathroom wall, then you must attend the upcoming regatta that the Inland Nautical Society holds each April and August. If you are looking for a bargain, than go to the swap meet that the Inland Nautical Society is putting on this month. Again, more information will be in the Upcoming Events Page of this newsletter. I m looking forward to seeing all of you at the next meeting. Also, please let me know if you are not receiving your newsletter. I have cut out the mailing out of the newsletter because it is now available on the web. ( If you do not have internet access, and you need to receive the newsletter via snail mail, please let me know, and I will do so. Newsletter will be available at the meetings for those without internet access. RESPECTFULLY YOURS..Captain Bob

In Loving Memory Barbara A. Dory January 7 th, 1943 January 14 th, 2012 Maritime Modelers was sad to hear of the loss of Barbara Dory wife of our member Mike. Although words are of little comfort at this most difficult time, we at Maritime Modelers would like to express our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the Dory family, and especially to Mike. May you take comfort in knowing that Barbara is now in the glory of heaven, and is dwelling in the house of our lord and savior, and that you and we will see her again some day. May you also be comforted in knowing that your friends at Maritime Modelers are grieving along with you and yours. Barbara A. Dory Again, please accept our deepest sympathy, and let us know if you need anything at all. Respectfully Yours..Maritime Modelers A loving mother, wife, and Granny, she was born in Moscow, Idaho on January 7, 1943 to Robert and Gerardine Hayes. She married Mike Dory on July 20, 2002 in Cheney, Washington, and worked and retired from Washington State University after 34 years. GO COUGS! She is survived by her husband; brother, Robert Haynes of Spokane, Washington; sons, John Scott of Chehalis, Washington, and Lance Scott of San Diego, California. She is also survived by five grandchildren. THE DRY-DOCK THE SAN FRANCISCO BARGE PROJECT BY CAPTAIN BOB TISCARENO

Pictured below you will see a series of digital images as taken by Bob. It will show the progress of a new vessel as designed by Bob. It starts out with a fiberglass hull sitting on blocks that Bob purchased from member Will Oudmayer. For a sense of looking more realistic, Bob drove down to San Pedro several times, and photographed the model at different stages of it s construction sitting alongside the docks. Bob got the idea for this barge, when he visited San Francisco a few months ago. One of the first images is that of the actual barge as it was seen along the waterfront of San Francisco Bay. Bob wanted to make his model as close to the actual barge itself, but decided to make a few minor changes/improvements. Bob hopes that this article will motivate other members to do the same, and photograph they re boating projects as they progress from an idea or photo to construction, to a working model boat/ship, along with a story of your project for publication in the newsletter. Pictured Above Left; is the actual barge as it looked when Bob took a digital image of it dockside in San Francisco Bay. Bob s reproduction of this vessel will pay the original a great compliment, by making many improvements. Pictured Above Center; is the hull of the vessel sitting on timbers at it s construction site at the Los Angeles Harbor Shipyard. Pictured Above Right; is the hull as it sat upside down as it sat while the bottom was painted black. After drying the hull was shot with a clear satin finish and the white waterline will be added using ¼ wide pin stripe tape. It will then again be re-photographed in San Pedro to show the finished job. Pictured Previous Page Left; is a digital image of the two Kort Nozzels after being painted to match the bottom of the hull. Pictured Previous Page Center; are the two propellers stuck to a lint roller for easy painting. Later they will be mounted to the Kort Nozzels, and installed in the boat. Pictured Previous Page Right; are the completed Kort Nozzle assemblies installed into the boat.

Pictured Above Left; is a picture of the radio and other electronics installed into the boat. Pictured Above Center; is an image of Frank Milowicki working on Bob s boat. Frank did the actual installation of the electronics, because I know absolutely nothing about the electronics part of the build. Pictured Above Right; is a picture of the barge as it was photographed in San Pedro again after being painted, and numbers added, and the deck mounted. Bob likes taking pictures of his boats down there to add the harbor image in the background. More images of this project will come next month, along with photos of a project that Frank Milowicki is working on. If you should have a project that you re working on, please send photos and a story about your build, and it will be published. After all, this isn t my newsletter, it s yours. 9 THE BIG I IS COMING TO SAN PEDRO U.S.S. IOWA BB-61 By: Bob Tiscareno As many if you might know, and maybe some of you don t, the U.S. Battleship Iowa BB-61 will be coming to San Pedro California to become a floating museum. The other day, I took a ride don t to San Pedro with my friend Armando, to visit the Maritime Museum, and also to check out the future site where the Iowa will be. The location of the battleship Iowa will be just off the Vincent Thomas Bridge between the World Cruise Center, and the Maritime Museum. It will be arriving in San Pedro sometime in April. I plan to be there all night, so when it does come, I will get some great shorts of it arriving, and the fire boats shooting water into the air to welcome the ship, etc, etc. Depending on the restrictions of private vessels, I might even be aboard my own boat watching it come in. The ship is currently being readied in Virginia for it s cruise to San Pedro. From what I understand, the ship will not be under it s own power on it s journey to the west coast, but will be towed the whole distance via tug boats, traveling through the Panama Canal. As I said, the ship will be arriving in April, but will not be open to the public until sometime later this year. If you would like to get more information about the U.S.S. Iowa BB-61, and it s journey to California, go to it s web-site at MORE INFORMATION TO FOLLOW NEXT MONTH!

Pictured Above Right; you know that you are truly a master of boat maintenance when you can wipe down your boat with your eyes closed as demonstrated by Bob Kiewiet. Pictured Above Left; Will Oudmayer works on his boat prior to putting it in the water. By the way! Will is selling some og his boats, so if you want a really quality built boat, talk to Will. 13 Pictured Previous Page Left; is yet another of Will Oudmayer s gigantic tugs. This boat has everything including a 56 channel radio. Hey! It s for sale. Pictured Previous Page Center; is the newest addition to Bob Tiscareno s ever growing fleet. This boat is called The Thunder Tiger Lobmaster. Pictured Previous Page Right; is Larry Tate s dual cockpit Typhoon. Pictured Above Left; Larry Tate s Typhoon died out on the lake, and needed to be pushed into port by his sea-doo. Pictured Above Right; is another view of Armando Leriget s Challenger. Note the mini blinds covering the windows and the curtains. LEONARDO DA VINCI S PADDLE WHEEL BOAT One of our members recently purchased this highly detailed model of Leonardo Di Vinci s Paddle Wheel boat from Ultimate Hobbies. It s a very detailed model, that is really simple to put together. The whole assembly process took less than 30 minutes. The owner who shall at this point shall remain nameless, plans to convert it to R/C. He hopes that he can find parts small enough to hide somewhere on the boat so that they cannot be seen. The model has a working rudder, and is propelled by both paddlewheels via a spring loaded mechanism. It will be at the next meeting.
