1 THE SETTLERS HIGH SCHOOL DRUM MAJORETTES General Information & Expectations MEMBERSHIP Only learners (grades 8 to 12) attending The Settlers High School may be selected as members of the team. Members will be selected at trials in October of each year. Membership is for a full season (October 2014 July 2015) and it is expected of members to attend all practices and competitions punctually. No medical appointments may be arranged during practice times and transport will not be accepted as a valid excuse in case of absence. Membership may be terminated if a learner is not committed. A new sport will then be allocated, based on availability. The school s Code of Conduct will apply to participants and spectators at all functions and competitions. Learners will be allocated marks for winter and summer sport participation. 2. TRIALS Trials for the 2015 season will be held on Friday, 31 October 2014 from 3pm on the Basketball Courts behind the main school building. All current members must also attend trials. The times are: New members: 3pm 6pm (Flag leader, Chante Andrews, to teach a routine) Current members: Flags: 3pm 4h30pm Duals & Subbies: 3pm 5pm Leader: 3pm 5:30pm The attached application form must be returned to Mr Smuts by 12 noon on Friday, 24 October Practices will start on Saturday, 8 November and current grade 7 learners must attend all these practices. A detailed practice programme for Term 4 is attached to this document. Learners need to prepare the following for the trials: NEW MEMBERS & FLAGS: To learn a set piece of Flag choreography at the trials. DUALS: Current dual display from I m gonna live until the start of the non-prop. SUBBIES: Current subbie display from Music was my first love until the end. LEADER: Prepare own display to the first 2 minutes of the 2014 Large Drill. Selection for other props, such as the pois and double-flags, as well as the Indoor Groups will be based on posture and showmanship during the trials. 3. FEES A monthly fee of R90 will be charged for 8 months (November 2014, and January to July 2015). This fee covers the uniforms, alterations, flags, additional props, music, affiliation and transport. Monthly fees will be added to the school fee account. For the current season, payments will be arranged as follows: R90 charged to 2014 account (November, December) must be paid cash to accounts office R630 charged to 2015 account (January - July) can form part of debit order from February. Payments can be made PER MONTH (R90) or the full amount at the start of the term. School fees will remain the first priority and must be paid up to date when drummie fees are paid.

2 4. KIT Drummies need to purchase the following: Boots: The boots will remain the property of the individual and can be used for the full time of participation (4 / 5 years). Second hand boots can be sold once learners leave the school. The school will place a bulk order in January. Cost of boots is approximately R320 per pair. Kit bag requirements: - 3 pairs of beach bronze stockings - Black FULL hot pants - Black Tommy takkies (for competitions) - Hairnet and clips - Gel (la Pebra) - Deodorant (to be arranged by uniform mothers see point 8) School Tracksuit SUBBIES & DUALS ONLY: - Mace / Dual (available from Tony du Toit, Tel ) (May start practicing with old primary mace, but must have a high school mace by January 2015) All Flags and additional props are supplied by the school. 5. PRACTICES DAY TIME VENUE DRESS Wednesdays 3pm 5 / 6 pm Basketball Courts OR DRUMMIES MAY ONLY PRACTICE IN Reeler Hall OR Astroturf THE OFFICIAL BRANDED SPORTS Fridays 3pm 5 / 6 pm Fairfield Rugby A OR Astroturf UNIFORM: Navy tracksuit pants or shorts OR Black tights Saturdays 2pm 5pm Astroturf White or Navy Phys-Ed shirt Takkies (no slip-slops) Drummies will receive a practice planner at the start of each term (see Term 4 planner attached to this letter). 6. COMPETITIONS Competition dates will be set by the Western Province Majorette and Cheerleading Association (WPMCA). These competitions will be held at the stadiums or hosting schools. The team will compete in the following categories: INDOOR: FLAG GROUP (24 members only) INDOOR: NON-PROP / POM-PON GROUP (24 members only) OUTDOOR: LARGE DRILL TEAM (Full team of 50 members) The competition dates will be handed to all drummies by the end of November The competition entrance fee is R20 for adults and R10 for children and pensioners.

3 7. SPECTATORS Parents and friends are requested to sit together as a group at competitions. Drummies require a large group of spectators and a lot of verbal support (cheering) during a performance. However, spectators are an extension of the team and a team may be disqualified or called for a hearing when spectators misbehave. No alcohol is allowed at a drummie competition. 8. UNIFORM MOTHERS Uniform mothers form an integral part of any drummie team. Four or five moms will be appointed on a voluntary basis. The tasks of the uniform mothers are: Maintain uniforms and flags. Wash / Iron uniforms after a competition. Co-ordinate cleaning of boots. Dress girls on a competition day. Supervise team on the stand at a competition. Check kit before a competition. In charge of uniform store. Uniform moms are the only parents who will be with the team on a competition day. These moms also have free access to competitions (Local and National) and they will be staying with the team when they are on tour. Should you wish to volunteer as a uniform mom, please indicate this on the attached enrolment form.
