A Challenge Badge Pack for All Sections 1

Hola! (Spanish is spoken in Ecuador) We are a group of 15 girls aged years, and three leaders who have been selected to embark on a LaSER expedition to Ecuador in the summer of During our time in Ecuador we will undertake a service project and have the opportunity to experience the local culture-we will be staying in a homestay in the Rainforest! We are all required to fundraise to finance our expedition and by completing this challenge pack and purchasing the badge you will be helping us on our way. Thank you so much for supporting us on our adventure of a lifetime. We hope you enjoy the activities in this pack. Ecuador is on the west coast of South America and straddles the equator. Ecuador covers an area of 283,520 sq. km. (175,780 sq. mi.) which is made up of the Amazon jungle, the Andean highlands and the Galápagos Islands. The capital of Ecuador is Quito. The time in Equador is GMT -5 hours. 2

How to earn an Ecuador badge This badge is open to all sections. We have included a range of activities for you to choose for your individual units, as you know the skills of your girls best, but we have added our suggestions by the relevant icon; Rainbows Brownies Guides To earn the badge, complete as many activities as you wish- have an Ecuadorian meeting, a series of meetings or a whole day/half day event! 4 The Ecuadorian Flag Create your own Ecuadorian flag-finger painting This is likely to get messy but will be so much fun! Equipment needed: Yellow, blue and red paint, a waterproof tablecloth, wet wipes, an A4 piece of paper and flag centre (resources page 12) for each person. Instructions: 1. Protect the table with the waterproof cloth and give each girl a piece of paper 2. Divide the A4 paper into 3 horizontal sections, for each colour; yellow at the top, blue in the middle section and the final bottom third will be the red section. 3. Each person will dip one of their fingers into the yellow paint and print it onto the yellow section, until it is complete. 4. Then print the blue section with a different finger and the same with the red section. 5. After all of the sections have been filled, provide everyone with wet wipes to clean off their messy hands! 6. Wait for the piece of paper to dry (you can put it on the radiator if you have one) and then glue the centre of the Ecuadorian flag in the middle. Why not try... Colour the Ecuadorian flag: We have provided a colouring sheet (resources page 13) that you can use with your group. This activity will require a little more concentration as everyone needs to complete all parts of the flag (including the decorative centre) Use colouring pencils-but fill each third with patterns in the relevant colour, and glue in the centre detail Create the flag as a collage; tear pieces from magazines of each colour and glue to the sections before adding the centre detail Use an old sheet and paint a huge flag! Pattern each coloured section Create a fabric flag by hand, or machine stitch designs in coloured thread for each section. Find out the meaning of the centre detail 4

Find the Ecuadorian flag! After all that creative time why not get your group up and running around with a game of find the flag. For this activity, you must hide at least 20 small flags around your guiding hall/hut. You can decide whether to put everyone into small groups or allow them to do it individually. The group or individual with the most flags wins! Hide the flags, but create clues to find their location. Or try numbering the flags-you have to find them and collect them in strict order only! We have provided a sheet of Ecuadorian flags for you to use (resources page 14) Test your knowledge Find out how familiar your group is with Ecuador, its culture, geography, and more. We have given you a choice of quizzes so take your pick! Quiz 1 Shout out your answers! 1. Which major rainforest is located in Ecuador? Amazon 2. What is the national flower of Ecuador that is also very popular on Valentine s Day? Rose 3. What is the main language of Ecuador, Spanish or French? Spanish 4. True or false? You can eat Guinea pig in Ecuador? True 5. Which continent is Ecuador in: Europe, Africa or South America? South America 6. What does Ecuador grow much more than any other country: coconuts, avocados or sugarcane? Sugarcane 5

7. What is the national animal of Ecuador: Andean Condor or the Galapagos Tortoise? Andean Condor 8. True or False? Tomate de aŕbol, means tree tomato? True 9. How many species of bird live in Ecuador: 1200, 1400 or 1600? What is the capital of Ecuador: Madrid, Quito or Rio? Quito Quiz 2 Split your group into small teams. The answers (true or false) will be located at different sides of the room and teams must decide which answer (and which side of the room) they will run to. Return to the centre of the room after each question. 1. The capital city of Ecuador is Quito 2. The main language spoken in Ecuador is Spanish 3. Yawning and pointing in public is considered rude in Ecuador 4. Ecuador has species of birds 5. Highland Ecuadorians like to eat guinea pigs for dinner 6. Ecuador has 10% of the trees in the world 7. The national flower is a rose 8. Ecuador has the world s highest active volcano 9. The capital city is the 2nd highest capital city in the world at 2850m high 10. The Amazon Rainforest covers half of the country of Ecuador Answers: they are all true! Quiz 3 In reverse! Use the word bingo resources on page 17. Give girls the words-and ask them to write the question that would give this answer! This sounds confusing! Give points for each correct question (which is the answer!) Perhaps give points for the most entertaining question! Award points if no other team give the same response to make it harder. Play in teams, pairs or individually. Highest points win. 6

Food glorious food! Chocolate tasting! Ecuador is known all around the world for the quality of the cocoa that they produce and of course cocoa is one of the main ingredients of chocolate (yum!). Try a taste challenge. Equipment; 4 different bars of chocolate-find Ecuadorian chocolate! Have a supermarket brand and basic brand-ensure the cocoa solid contents vary. Try white chocolate perhaps. Have enough that each girl can taste some of each 4 plates Tasting score cards for each participant(resources page 15) Place the different bars of chocolate on separate plates around the room (noting which is which!). Ask participants to complete the tasting card. Explain that as a group they should listen to the sound of the chocolate as one person breaks some off. Tick which chocolate had the best smell, repeat for each of the other categories. Tick their favorite overall. Did you all have the same preferences? Why would this be? Mark each chocolate per category out of 5; scoring 5 to the one most liked. Add a description of each category. Add up the scores to find the winner! Did the % of cocoa solids have an impact? What sense had a greater influence on your choices? What other influences are there?-mood? Temperature? Discuss. How is chocolate made? We will be making chocolate from cocoa pods while in Ecuador! Cocoa is an important product in Ecuador, but turning cocoa into chocolate is a long process. Research the steps involved and present what you have find. This might be a poster, role play, presentation, or your own preference. Does this change the way you feel about chocolate? 7

Cook and try some plantain Plantain looks very much like a banana but has a different taste and texture. It can be cooked in many different ways. Try deep fried plantain chips; chop the plantain into thin slices or small cubes and fry them in a pan of hot oil. Cook and try some quinoa Ecuador is the biggest exporter of quinoa. Prepare a simple dish using cooked quinoa and try it. Have a taste test of quinoa dishes-develop your own taste cards and ask others to take part. Have a feast! Research other dishes from Ecuador and plan a meal for a small group. Budget costs, plan preparation time, share tasks-cook and feast! What did you like best? Were you brave to try something new? Or why not find an Ecuadorian restaurant to dine out in style!? Here s a few suggestions Ceviche Choclo Cuy Empanadas Hornado Pan de Yuca Patacones Pinches 8

Fun and Games Word Bingo Hand out the provided bingo cards (resources page 16). Pick from the provided words at random (see activity resources) and then read out the information about the word. The first to complete their full bingo card is the winner, or alternatively you might want to award those who fill out one whole row or column first. For younger groups just read out the words (not the clues). Ecuador themed Pictionary Divide your group into small teams of around 5 and give one person form each team, the same word from the Word Bingo list (resources page16). They will then have to draw what s written on the card to the rest of their team. The first team to guess what is being drawn will win a point. The team with the highest total of points wins. Memory game You will need paper and pencils/pens. Split the girls up into teams of around 4 6. Print off the rainforest picture (resources page 18) and put them out of sight, for example just outside a door. Allow one girl at a time from each team to go and look at the picture for 30 seconds. Then she must come back and describe the picture to her teammates. The girl who has just been to look at the picture is not allowed to draw. Once 6 turns have been used up (this can be changed depending on how long you have) compare the drawing to the original picture and the team who is closest to their picture wins. Alternatively-print off the rainforest picture on A3 paper-cut out the centre to create a photo booth! Can you get groups of girls in the picture? All of the girls? Have the frame near you but the girls much further away-can they organise it themselves! 9

Nature Become a Sloth We have chosen our team mascot to be a sloth. We made name badges using a small sloth picture (resources page 18). Decorate your own sloth and make a name badge-adding a pin the back. How does a sloth move? Spend ten minutes moving like a sloth! Decorate and cut out the large sloth (resources page 18) Can you hang him in the rainforest-a nearby plant or tree. Find out about the habitat of a sloth what he eats and does. Tell the others in the group The importance of the Amazon rainforest Think about why the Amazon rainforest is important to you, to other people and to our world and present your ideas. This might be a poster, role play, or presentation, or your own preference a song! You might also want to think about the current dangers to the Amazon rainforest and what we can do to help save it. Create a campaign to support the Rainforest, share this with others. How can you take this further? Girlguiding in Ecuador Sadly there are no Guide groups in Ecuador. Your challenge, in groups, is to design a poster encouraging the development of guiding in Ecuador. How would you begin this campaign? What research would you need to undertake? What options could you use? What resources would you need? What help may you need? Each group can then present their ideas to the unit. Design a uniform if you were able to start a unit in Ecuador. Vote for the winning design. Why was this one chosen? 10

Time to get crafty A traditional craft from Ecuador is to make things, such as ornaments and jewellery, from a special type of bread dough, similar to salt dough. The items that are made are finished in vibrant colours and are commonly available to buy in local markets. Have a go at making an owl pendant or hanging from salt dough. When it has dried make sure to finish it by decorating it in bright colours. Ingredients: 1 cup salt 2 cups of flour ¾ cup of water 1. Mix the ingredients together until they form a smooth ball. 2. Flatten out your dough using your hands or a rolling pin. 3. Cut the shape of an owl from your dough using a knife. 4. Use a skewer to make any markings on your owl, and a hole to hang him from. 5. Bake your owl in the oven at 180 degrees C for about 10 minutes (the time will vary dependent on the thickness of your dough). 6. Allow your owl to cool and then paint in colours of your choice. 7. Varnish or seal with PVA What else could you make? Rainforest plants, insects, animals...or a whole Rainforest scene! 11
