Adventure Summer Program Times Healey School: 5 Meacham Street Somerville, MA, Phone: x6551 Director s aguereque@k12.somerville.ma.us Adriana Guereque, Program Director Jennie McGoldrick, Administrator Rosanna Paribello, Asst. Administrator Week 2: July 9 th - July 13 th Destination Imagination Theme: Under the Sea. Important Information Program runs from July, Thursday 5th, through Friday, August 10th. Program hours: 8:00am-5:30pm Children must be accompanied by an adult during check-in Counselors and check-out in Training What to Pack: Sneakers, Flip Flops (beach days only), Bathing Suit, Towel, Sunscreen, Water Bottle, and plastic bag for Counselors wet bathing Training suits. Students must wear their camp shirts on fieldtrip days.(tuesdays & Thursdays). We have a weekly show every Friday at 3:20 in the Cafeteria. It is recommended that parents label their children s belongings (backpacks, shirts, bathing suits, etc ) so that lost items can be returned to their owner. Additional information can be found in the Parent/Guardian Handbook. Summer is finally here and Destination Imagination has started putting their creative ability to work! It was time to welcome each other to camp and get to know each other by playing the name game and learning about our favorite Disney characters. Campers had fun marble painting with red, white and blue on Mickey Mouse cutouts, and creating their own Mickey and Minnie s with paper plates, paint, scissors, paper and glue. It is fun to give students the materials and watch them get creative in their own ways! We started week two by taking a dive off the coast of Denmark and meeting Ariel and Flounder as campers created their own flounder. Our next Adventure was close to the Great Barrier Reef where the older campers learned how to draw the famous clownfish, Nemo! During week two, campers will continue to learn about creatures that live under the sea. Some will be creating their own clothespin mermaids and treasure troves, as others have fun with clay and sand art making their favorite sea creature. DI is never complete without some sensory fun! I hope you are all ready for a fun summer! I know I am! Stay tuned

Book Worms! Just Do It! Welcome to Book Worms, formerly known as S.M.Art!! In Bookworms, students are exposed to different genres of stories in both the fiction and non-fiction realms, with additional focus in writing and visual arts. Together, these three elements create an enjoyable club for Summer Adventure Camp; Destination Disney. During week one, students were read a short biography on how Walt Disney s love of storytelling and animation lead to the Disney Franchise and Theme Parks. During week two, sticking with the Under the Sea Theme, students were read Clark the Shark Dares to Share, whose main characters are all underwater sea creatures. While this summer s weekly themes circle back to Destination Disney, the contents of each story stories will stray away from the traditional sense of the word and only draw as inspiration. My Summer Abroad Adventure Program has begun, with returning friendships, smiles and an eagerness to start the specialist classes. Summer Abroad is welcoming all students with open arms to celebrate the wonders of Disney. The first two days gave students an insight to Walt Disney; who was he and what contributions he made to a child s dream. Welcome to Just Do It club for the Somerville Adventure Camp! In Just Do It, students get to let out some energy from those long summer days through different gym games, athletic sports and team building exercises. Just Do It is a fun, safe and structured gym club that the students would normally receive at their day school during the school year, but with a summer camp twist! During week one at camp with the theme being Walt s Welcome for the Disney theme of the camp for the summer, students in groups 1-4 got to participate in games that allowed them to introduce themselves to their fellow group members, share their favorite Disney movie and build positive behavior! Groups 5-8 also got to play some team building games as well as introduce themselves to their fellow group members by sharing who their favorite Disney character is. For week two s theme of Under the Sea, the younger students in groups 1-4 were able to participate in the ever so popular tag game of Fishy Fishy as well as being introduced to a new game called Overboard that had a Simon Says similarity paired with a pirate theme! The older students in groups 5-8 were able to express their competitive side in team building games of soccer and dodge-ball where the teams had to create names based off of sea creatures! We are all very excited to see what the rest of this summer holds at Somerville Adventure Camp and we are looking forward to an active group of students in Just Do It! Mickey Mouse necklaces were made as well as creating their admission tickets to the adventure. The second week starts off Under the Sea, where mysteries and unknown are the greatest part. We started off with making our voyager boats, loosely based off of Moana s voyager boat. It incorporated teamwork, cooperation and learning how to engineer a floating boat. We will continue this week with integrating memory games, volcanoes and sandcastle making. We hope the students will get to enjoy various ocean elements! - 2 -

Hi-Tech! "Hello from Hi-Tech! This summer Hi-Tech will explore all sorts of STEM activities, ranging from designing boats with tin foil to creating animal habitats from things we find outside. Each week we will experiment, explore, and create through lessons relating to the weekly themes of oceans, geography, and more! Got Dirt! What a week! The rainforest class has officially started. We will be working on our science skills and learning about the diversity of the rainforest this year. This week in the rainforest we started our summer long experiment. We all planted a bean in a plastic bag, which will hang in our windows and we hopefully will get to watch them grow! We are practicing our observation and prediction skills this week. Campers either drew pictures of their beans and predictions or used as detailed language as they could to describe what they saw. We are going over the four layers of the rainforest as well (ask your camper what they are!) Campers are also learning a bunch of fun rainforest songs. Looking forward to next week and hopefully some sprouts! During week one, we learned about bones in the human body, and created our own skeletons out of q-tips! Students learned where their bones begin and end, how they are connected, and how many bones we each have. Week two brought us the seven seas and other ocean adventures, so naturally we made world maps to learn more about the world around us. Students glued pasta to their maps and then painted them, all while learning about the oceans and continents of the world. Students also got the opportunity to design boats out of tin foil and see how many pennies it could hold before it sank. This was a great lesson in engineering and helped the students really understand what goes into making something buoyant." - 3 -

Hollywood! Hollywood takes off swimming by big dances, mini skits, and camp songs. On day one the stars learned their roles and dance moves with ease. The next day some campers and CIT s helped decorate the stage with a large banner saying Under the Sea. They worked hard cutting out little fish, seaweed, and sponges to create the scene. Many campers came up with a great idea to decorate with dots and starfish to make a stunning backdrop. Audience members will be impressed when they see the jellyfish and plethora of seaweed hanging on the backdrop of the stage! In this picture, campers are decorating a box that will be a part of the scenery. Heat! Welcome back families! HEAT has been sizzling with fun recipes and activities. We talked about Walt Disney and the origin of Mickey Mouse! We then had some fun making Mickey Mouse Pizza yum. We enjoyed sometime freeze dancing and keeping our bodies active while we waited for our food to cook. Our student chefs were very creative and used the dough to mimic the shape of Mickey Mouse s head! This week, we focused on our Under the Sea theme. We learned about sea creatures and their habitats. We prepared beach cups, and made seafood dishes. We found out that lobsters, krill, crayfish, shrimp, crabs, and barnacles are all crustaceans. Ms. Tamar brought in real shrimp! Did you know that some shrimp were up to 17 centimeters long? We peeled our shrimp and discussed its features. Our student chefs did an amazing job seasoning the shrimp with salt and sofrito( a blended mixture of garlic, cilantro, tomato, and red peppers). We also cut up some yummy peppers and cooked them. Guess what we made? Shrimp Kabobs! Later this week, we read about crabs. Our students learned about the anatomy of a crab, and watched a short clip of a crab s life. Then, we made crab cakes. They were delicious! Our student chef s will be master chefs in no time. Bon appetite! - 4 -

C.I.T. This week the CIT s have learned and practiced some leadership skills. We have been helping out with other groups and classes, and have also organized a bake sale for Friday. Keep your eyes out during the camp show for the backdrop we help made! We will be preparing for next week Car Wash!!! Don t forget to bring some money and look for the C.I.T. Car Wash!!!! All Groups Thursday Fieldtrip: Nahant Beach Everyone enjoyed the weather this week at the beach! The kids had fun playing in the sand, taking walks with teachers, and playing near the shore in the waves
