Craig Principal-Jen School Director of Educational Services-Maryville Academy Chicago Sky Visit Jen By: Kristina Seidelman-Nickels On April 12, 2016, the Chicago Sky WNBA organization came to visit the Maryville Jen School to get the students involved in their Hoops for Health program. Hoops for Health is a health and wellness platform presented by the Chicago Sky and Rivers Casino to encourage physical activity and healthy living for children and families through various programs and events. Several members of the Sky coaching staff and the team s mascot, the Chicago Sky Guy, were on hand to coordinate various basketball related activities with the students and staff in the Maryville gymnasium. Activities included warm ups, basketball drills, and relay races that were enjoyed by the student body. Students were also provided information about how to build healthy habits like exercising regularly and eating a nutritional diet. Thank you to the Chicago Sky organization and Rivers Casino for coordinating this event for the students of Jen School! Jen Events:

Health Beat: Sun Safety Save your skin! By: Tracy Mullen School Nurse Sun safety is never out of season, but the arrival of spring and summer means more activities outside. Sun safety has become clearer over the last 30 years and studies have shown that sun exposure can cause skin cancer. Sun damage to the body is caused by invisible ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Harmful rays from the sun, sunlamps and tanning beds can cause eye problems, weaken your immune system, give you skin spots and cause wrinkles. Whatever our skin color, we re potentially susceptible to sunburn and other harmful effects of UV radiation. Reduce time in the sun especially between 10AM and 2PM when the sun is at its strongest. Even on an overcast day 80% of the sun s UV radiation gets through the clouds. Wear clothes that protect the body. Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Also, use a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against all types of skin damage caused by sunlight. Water resistant sunscreen stays on the body longer. INVEST: New Uniforms for Student Workers Students working in the INVEST (Integrated Vocational Educational Skills Training) Program were extremely excited at the arrival of new work uniforms. The uniforms come in long and short sleeve shirts and are a light, breathable cotton. They are more comfortable and help in keeping uniforms for the school day clean. Keep an eye out for our hard workers sporting their new threads around campus! Apply sunscreen to all uncovered skin about 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply at least every 2 hours. Wearing sun glasses will help protect your eyes. (Source: FDA) Happy Summer! Classroom Corner By: Kaleem Nazir - Teacher Room 600 is currently studying World War II in American History class. They are taking a field trip to the Illinois Holocaust Museum in Skokie. They are also making Japanese food with Ms. Toni during a kitchen invasion. The class is currently working together on a project to create a newscast for Oral Communication class. 2

SAVE THE DATE: Jen School Bake Sale Friday, May 20th By: Donna Hoffman School Psychologist This will mark the 6 th year we have raised funds for Share our Strength No Kid Hungry campaign. This is a national campaign to end childhood hunger in America. No child should grow up hungry in America, but one in five children struggles with hunger. Share Our Strength s No Kid Hungry campaign is ending child hunger in America by ensuring all children get the healthy food they need, every day. Money made from our bake sale goes directly to the Breakfast Initiative. Making breakfast part of the regular school day, just like lunch, has a powerful effect on kids. Hungry kids have the food they need to excel in class. Studies show that grades and attendance rise when breakfast is served during the school day. Getting to school extra early is a challenge for working families. Making breakfast part of the regular school day solves that problem. In their classrooms, our students learn about hunger in America and discuss how they can help; they become excited to participate in the school bake sale. Each classroom decides what to bake, calculates the ingredients needed for tripling the recipes they find, schedules kitchen time to prepare, and then works as a team measuring, stirring, baking, and decorating their treats. The students also are involved with packaging and pricing their baked goods. In addition to this, each class takes turns working at the bake sale: greeting customers, helping with purchases, making change, and bagging the goodies. Of course, the students also bring in their own money to purchase a few treats for themselves. So far, some of the items that will be featured are the ever popular Oreo truffles, lemon pound cake, and banana pudding bars. Staff are invited and encouraged to bake and bring in baked goods to sell as well. Last year we had some special sweets such as chocolate covered bacon, strawberry jam, blueberry coffee cake, and homemade Italian bread. We hope to offer some surprises this year as well. You ll have to come on the 20 th to see what they are!! 3

The Lollipop Man Original adaptation of The Gingerbread Man Once upon a time, there was a candy salesman with a big factory and a big candy shop called Sucker Punch Suckers. One day he wanted to think BIG! So his company workers made a jumbo sucker punch sucker! Then The jumbo sucker punch sucker knocked out the factory worker, and jumped off of the conveyer belt. The other factory workers stood around their knocked out coworker saying, Get back here lollipop man! We need to package you up and sell you so you can get eaten! The sucker punch sucker said, That ain t my name, my name is the Sucker Punch Sucker! Now step back before I sucker punch you! The factory workers backed away slowly. The sucker punch sucker said, Ha, that s what I thought! SO LONG SUCKERS! Then he left the building. On the run, the Sucker Punch Sucker was thinking, I want to be the first lollipop that ever boxed! But where is a boxing gym? So the sucker ran through the suburbs of Des Plaines to find a boxing gym when...chomp! A goose tried to bite the Sucker Punch Sucker. Hey! said the lollipop man, knock it off before I sucker punch you! Oh yeah? said the goose, if you sucker punch me, I ll peck you, then eat you! Then... The lollipop man sucker punched the goose! The goose was then knocked out! Minding my own business as you can see! said the lollipop. Whoa! said the wolf. Why are you so aggressive Mr. Lollipop? I know what you re up to wolf! said the lollipop man. Oh dear lord, said the wolf another wise guy racist! What are you talking about? said the lollipop man. Darn goose! said the lollipop man, how rude! He didn t even give me any directions for a gym! So, the lollipop man walked all the way from Des Plaines to the small town of Rosemont. Then he saw a wolf. Why, hello there! said the wolf. What is a tasty, I mean pleasant looking, unusually large lollipop like you doing outdoors so late? Every person I meet who I only want to be friends with thinks just because I m a wolf I d eat them! said the wolf. Oh! said the lollipop man. 5

Yes! said the wolf. Now follow me to my home turf, I have something to show you! No way! said the lollipop man, I will not trust you wolf! You ve tricked my great cousin Gingerbread Man! Then you ate him! STEP OFF! So the lollipop man sucker punched the wolf! The wolf is now knocked out! Darn! said the lollipop man. I keep forgetting to ask for directions! Forget it! I ll find one myself! So, the lollipop man walked and walked and walked, until finally, he found a boxing gym. Then he bumped into a human! Hey! said, the lollipop man! Watch where you re going! I apologize Mr. Lollipop man. said the human. It s the Sucker Punch Sucker to you, bud! said the lollipop man. Out of my way dude, the lollipop man demanded. I need to get in this boxing gym! This isn t a boxing gym! said the human. Do I look like I was created yesterday? said the lollipop man. Wait, the lollipop man thought, I actually was! But THAT DOESN T MATTER. Move out of my way I say! The human stood completely still. That s it, you just earned yourself a sucker punch from the one and only Sucker Punch Sucker! the lollipop man yelled. Then the human blocked the sucker punch, grabbed the sucker, and CRUNCH!! The lollipop man had been eaten! Then, the founder of Sucker Punch Suckers ran up to the other human breathing heavily saying, young man, that ll be $1.25! Puzzled, the human said, what? $1.25 for a lousy sucker? No! said the founder, $1.25 for a large, walking and talking sucker! THE END 6
