2 AVA 2014 Annual Convention 45 and Just Hitting Our Stride! Feb. 28-March 1, 2014 in the San Francisco Bay Area General Information Get ready to learn, share, connect, and celebrate at this year s AVA Annual Convention, designed for all levels of coaches and vaulters, with plenty of educational sessions and fun for parents and vaulting enthusiasts as well! As we celebrate our 45th year as a non-profit, come join us in the City by the Bay! For Adults For coaches, club managers, parent, judges and vaulting enthusiasts, the convention will feature a range of educational sessions (including two very special workshops by the non-profit Positive Coaching Alliance --one for parents and one for coaches), networking events, and fun! For Vaulters We re gearing up for the competition season, and have two days (Saturday and Sunday) to put the finishing touches on your routines and tune up your compulsories for more competition success! Late Saturday, the Positive Coaching Alliance will end the day with a special workshop for athletes. Sunday will feature private coaching sessions with the nation s best vaulters. Don t miss this chance to tune up for the competition season with the Best of the Best! Flying in and out of the San Francisco Bay Area Though the Hilton San Francisco Airport Bayside (also known as Hilton SFO) is a mere three miles from the San Francisco Airport (SFO), you might also check prices in and out of the San Jose Airport (SJC) and Oakland Airport (OAK) if you plan to rent a car anyway or don t mind a longer ride (45 minutes) on SuperShuttle. Experts say the best time to book a cheap domestic airfare is between four to six weeks out, so start looking now! And sign up now for an airfare alert website, which will alert you to the lowest prices as they change over the next few weeks: or For more airline booking tips: or com/travel-tips/air-travel/tips-for-finding-cheap-airfare. And save on your airfare by flying out Thursday morning (in time to audit the afternoon vaulting lessons at Woodside, Mt. Eden and Pacific Coast) and flying out Tuesday morning, after a glorious day and night playing in San Francisco! Transportation to the Hotel and Nearby Locations The Hilton SFO shuttle is free to AVA members during the Convention. The shuttle will take you to and from SF Airport (a quick three-mile ride) and will also take you to and from downtown Burlingame ( burlingamedowntown.org/ ), a quaint little town that has many selections for both dining and shopping. Transportation to The City (San Francisco) Through the Hilton SFO shuttle, you can even get to downtown San Francisco! Just take the Hilton Shuttle to SFO, then transfer on to the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) to go into downtown San Francisco. www. flysfo.com/to-from/public-transit

3 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Transportation/Hotel How do I get a great flight? Be sure to check the flight aggregators ( or etc.) as well as the independents that don t show up on those sites, like Southwest. The ideal time to book a cheaper flight is about three to six weeks out for domestic flights. Go to to set up an airfare alert so you know when prices go down. Early morning seems to be the best time to snag a cheap ticket. Will I need to rent a car? If you re flying into San Francisco Airport (SFO) the answer is probably not. The hotel shuttle picks up and delivers to SFO every 20 minutes, and also does the same to Downtown Burlingame. From the airport you can also take public transportation into San Francisco to sightsee. If you plan to audit the vaulting lessons at either Woodside, Pacific Coast or Mt. Eden, you will need transportation to and from the hotel to those locations. Our recommendation is to find out which other members might be coming in a day early to audit these sessions, and then pool resources to get a car for that day, or the duration. I d like to share a room but I don t have a ready roommate. Ideas? Reserve a hotel room (be sure to note final cancellation dates) and then check around in your region (perhaps your Region s YahooGroup?) to see who might want to share. Or put a message up on the AVA s Facebook page. Also convention@americanvaulting.org, put on the subject line Need a (Fe)Male Roommate and we will keep a list. Is there free internet at the hotel? Of course there s free internet. The SF Airport is only 20 minutes from Silicon Valley! Does the hotel have a gym or a pool? The hotel has both! If you gain a few pounds during the weekend, don t blame us. The pool is an indoor one. I m thinking of coming in a day early and leaving a couple of days late. Is that a good idea? For those of you coming from afar, of course it s a good idea! If you can come in by Thursday early afternoon, you can audit lessons at any of the area s three largest clubs to see how others structure such things. If you leave Tuesday morning you can attend each and every Sunday session at the convention, then go into San Francisco for a spectacular dinner, and the next day go sightseeing! If you d like a sightseeing buddy, let us know convention@americanvaulting.org and we ll see if any other sightseers need to be paired up. General Questions I don t know anyone. So I m afraid I ll be a wallflower. Our convention is structured so you ll get lots of chances to meet new people! We ll be putting coaches/ lungers/parents together in small groups for lunches and dinners, if so desired, so you can meet new, fun people. By the time the convention is over you ll have lots of new vaulting friends. If you re really worried, or if you d just like to make sure you have a wingman (wingwoman), us at convention@ americanvaulting.org and ask for a buddy. We ll assign you one! continued

4 continued FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Why is there an additional cost for the Open Judges Forum? The Open Judges Forum is the annual fund raiser by the judges for the AVA Judging Program. The proceeds for the event pay for items like travel costs for apprentice judges (to practice judge alongside experienced judges at AVA competitions), video to help the judges practice judge, etc. It s well worth the extra fee! Vaulter Questions If I m an adult vaulter and plan to attend all the sessions (except for Saturday) as well as vaulting on Saturday, which registration package do I choose? Choose the full registration package, which includes EVERYTHING (besides the Open Judges Forum). Check the box that says you will be vaulting that day. Is the Vaulting Clinic indoors or out? Indoors. Both Saturday and Sunday are in the main ballroom of the hotel. Is there anything special I need to bring? All registered vaulters will get a sheet of directions at least a week prior to the convention. Positive Coaching Alliance What is the Positive Coaching Alliance? PCA is a national nonprofit developing Better Athletes, Better People by working to provide all youth athletes a positive, character-building youth sports experience. Through a generous grant by the Benjamin Family, the AVA is now a partner with PCA, and PCA will be teaching three separate sessions at our convention: one for coaches, one for parents, and one for the vaulters themselves. Through this partnership the PCA will also be providing our members (again, coaches, parents and athletes) with tips for success, and offering additional classes (via webinar) as well. The PCA workshops alone are well worth the cost of convention registration! What are the specific workshop sessions for each group? For Coaches: The Double-Goal Coach: Coaching for Winning and Life Lessons For Parents: The Second-Goal parent: Developing Winners in Life Through Vaulting For Vaulters: Becoming a Triple-Impact Competitor If you have other questions that aren t answered here or on the convention website, be sure to us at convention@americanvaulting.org!
