1 OctoBER 2013 Anne Arundel Fish & Game Conservation Association The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government. - Thomas Jefferson From the President Hello Fellow Shooters, Fall is here. But the good news is that this month is full of great things scheduled at Anne Arundel Fish and Game. Our 8 th annual Bull Roast will take place on Saturday, October 12 th. There is always great food and good times! The Bull Roast is a great way for provisional members to meet full members and find someone who will come out with you so you can shoot. Remember, as a provisional member you cannot shoot without a full member being present on the range with you. The club championship, better known as the Ernie Clarke Memorial Shoot, will take place on Sunday October 13 th. If you have not participated in this match you don t know what you are missing! It is your chance to shoot a discipline you may have never shot. Archery is one discipline most members have never tried. There will also be shotgun, pistol and rifle events. You don t have to be the best in every event. Just be consistent. Ask Greg Nolte, 2012 champion. Everything you need is provided. All you have to do is show up and pay your entry fee. I would like to thank Brad Quintal who has headed up the club championship for the last three years and has always done a great job! For more information on the Bull Roast and Club Championship, please look elsewhere in this month s SCORE. I look forward to seeing the many members who attend these events each year. President, continued on Page 14. AAF&G Legislative Update: Welcome To The New Normal As of October 1 st, SB281, the latest and greatest gun control to be imposed upon us, is in full effect. I expect lawsuits to be rolling into the courthouses as you read this. Not to sound like a broken record, but see the D.I.N.O. notice in this newsletter (Page 3) and follow the advice. It s really our only chance to make effective changes in Maryland! Again, to highlight some of the FAQs regarding SB281 (as of this writing - important disclaimer!) If you already own a regulated firearm ( assault rifle or handgun), you do NOT need to do anything The door is now closed for new purchase or transfer of many regulated long arms, AKA Assault rifles. So if you don t already own one, you re out of luck in Maryland. If you wish to purchase a handgun, going forward you are going to have to submit to fingerprinting, licensing, and possibly training (depending on a number of factors). The net effect is going to be an estimated $200-$400 for a new handgun purchase from here on out. Magazines: If you already own high capacity (greater than 10 round) magazines, you can keep them and don t have to do anything. If you DON T, you can buy them out of state, in person, and it is legal to do so. The details above just scratch the surface, and even as of this date, are still not set in stone. Stay tuned for further updates and details. Brian Swift AAFG Legislative Chair 1969 AAF&G Bullseye Pistol Team Top Row (L-R): Unknown, Bob Simpson, Jerry Stelzer, Dick Luttrell, Unknown. 4 A Call for Action We have rallied at every crisis that affects our 2 nd Amendment rights by writing our representatives (both state and federal) to express our views on gun control. While this is certainly necessary to fight for our rights, I wonder if it is enough. In the past I have, as have others, written to the Evening Capital Letters To The Editor in the hopes of educating the general public about the efficacy of gun restrictions. Most people are unaware that guns are used in self defense many times more than they are used in senseless killings and the many states that have Right-To-Carry laws have experienced a drop in violent crime rate. I wonder if a concerted effort to educate the public by writing to newspapers (and perhaps other media?) would provide additional leverage to our cause. If we can convince more of the general public that gun control laws don t work (and may even have the opposite effect) maybe our dissenting representatives would listen a bit better. To this end, I suggest that more of our members write in to express our views. As an example, I have included a letter I submitted to the Capital regarding the latest tragedy at the Naval Yard: Gun Control? Yet another tragedy took place in DC last Monday that gun control enthusiasts will probably chime in on. The fact that our governor s new law would, essentially, have done nothing to prevent it will be completely lost on these people. But facts are facts: 1. The shooter used a weapon that is not on the governor s list. 2. The shooter had documented mental problems 3. The shooter had two previous incidents relating to firearms; was arrested, but not convicted. It is clear that the regulations described in SB 281 (which becomes law on October 1st) would not have prevented this tragedy. Besides harassing lawabiding citizens the law will do little, if anything to keep our citizens safe. What needs to be done is to enforce existing laws and convict people who violate them, as well as to assure that the mentally ill have no access to firearms. What is needed is a streamlined reporting system that feeds the existing NICS (National Instant Criminal background checks System) so that felons and the mentally ill cannot buy firearms. We need to face reality and institute the laws and the means to keep our citizens safe rather than enact laws that may be perceived as politically advantageous but have no bearing on preventing future tragedies. 5 2013 ORIENTATION SESSIONS & RANGE SAFETY WALK-THROUGHS ALLOW 3-4 Hours OCTOBER Saturday, October 19 th at 9am NOVEMBER Sunday, November 17 th at 10am DECEMBER Saturday, December 21 st at 9am JANUARY 2014 Sunday, January 19 th at 10 am NOTE: Those newly accepted Provisional members will be invited by to attend the next walk-through as part of the membership acceptance notice. Previously accepted Provisional members who have not been able to attend are invited to do so at any monthly session. Prior registration/notice of intention to attend is not required but cannot hurt. Remember, the 6 month minimum provisional membership clock doesn t start until you attend the Safety Orientation and Range Walk-through. You could be a Provisional member for a looooong time if you don t attend. Worse yet, until you attend you will not be issued a Provisional membership card or a gate access card. So the sooner the better since (hint, hint) the sooner you attend, the sooner you can get your membership and gate access cards and work toward attaining full member status. Only then can you shoot all by your lonesome and bring guests! Attendees should bring with them eye and ear protection and a check for the annual dues (prorated for the months remaining in the calendar year), $50 annual capital assessment, and $25 for the gate access card deposit. 6 Gun School Date: October 13, 2013 Cost: $20 Description: All AAF&G members in good standing It s that time of year again, time to see who will be the next AAF&G club champion. The Ernie Clarke Memorial Shoot is the annual club championship for the Anne Arundel Fish & Game organization. The shoot consists of events in the various disciplines that AAF&G offers. Past champions have been steady throughout the events, not necessarily winning all the events. Participants are encouraged to enter to see how they compare with other members. This year s event will be held on Sunday, October 13, 2013 from 10:00am 3:00pm (a sanctioned weekend). Registration begins at 9:00am and closes at 2:00pm. Eye and ear protection is mandatory for shooters and guests. Targets, equipment, and ammunition will be provided for shooters. We hope to see you there, and maybe you will be the next club champion! Brad Quintal Provisional Members Gun School The next scheduled Gun School is set for Sunday, November 10 th at noon. I failed to mention in last month s article that this November 10th date is rescheduled from the originally announced date of November 3 rd. If you are a provisional member and wish to register for the Gun School class in November, please send me an at bambam612@comcast. net. I will send you an confirmation that you are registered for the class. Note that you must be a provisional member to attend, i.e., you must have had your interview, safety walkthrough, and have been issued your provisional membership card. We can accommodate up to 20 people in the Gun School class. Although it is unlikely that the class will fill up, if it does, a waiting list will be created. Those on the waiting list will be placed into class on a first come, first served basis if there are any cancellations. Therefore, it is very important if you are confirmed to attend the Gun School class on November 10 th and cannot attend, that you notify me by so that I can place someone from the waiting list into the November class. 7 IDPA This Year IDPA at AAF&G continues to be very popular. We are very pleased with the turnout in spite of the reduced availability of ammo. Year-to-date, 218 shooters have attended 43 matches. Total year-to-date attendance is 933. We are gratified to see more club members participating in the matches. In the first three quarters we have had the following matches: 3 Action Shotgun 2 Three Gun 3 USPSA 35 IDPA If you are interested in shooting in an IDPA or USPSA match, please go to and follow the How to enter our matches directions. Lady s IDPA Match On Saturday, September 21st, twelve women participated in an IDPA instruction session and then shot a full match. Cindi Thomas and Tanja Pietrass were the instructors. Both hold IDPA Expert classifications. They provided education, expertise, safety, and fun for the participants. One of the shooters sent the following comment to the instructors. As a new shooter, this was a very comfortable environment to learn in and your patience and attention to safety made it a great experience. We will be having more matches, so please look for the announcement in the SCORE. Cowboy Action owdy Pardners, H It was a great day for a Cowboy match. We had four great stages provided by our own Buffalo Creek Bob (Guy Bellanca), who still had a hard time remembering the shooting order. While we only had a handful of procedurals, no one had a clean match. Wichita Wayne came in first with a total time of seconds. He was followed closely by Chaptico Marshal in second and Skip Killer Miller in third. A quick cleanup of the range and it was off to the Red Hot to do our clinkin & drinkin. Our next match will be October 19 th. Setup starts at 8 am. All help will be appreciated. Hope to see you there. AAF&G Welcomes FIVE New Provisional Members Five new provisional member applications were proposed to and approved for acceptance as members by the Board and the General Membership at the September 2013 Board and General Membership meetings. The five provisional members are: Scott BASS, William Skip MINER, Keith RICHARDSON, Jerry GRAHAM, and Brian STEWART. If you see them on the range after their initial orientation and safety walkthrough, remember that they ll be looking to you for guidance in following the range safety rules, range protocol, range safety customs, range safety ethics, etc., and they cannot shoot without the presence of a full member on that range. So please help them out if you can. Be a mentor. MORE PROVISIONAL MEMBERS ACCEPTED AS FULL MEMBERS T he September Board and General Membership meetings saw two more provisional members gain full membership. Brian TESNEER, Val KAPLINSKI, and Christine KAPLINSKI are the most recent provisional members to gain full membership. They completed all the requirements of provisional membership a minimum of 6 months as a provisional member participating at AAF&G with demonstrated safe shooting in at least 3 different shooting disciplines Handgun, Rifle, and Shotgun, and attendance at and participation in AAF&G Gun School (AKA the AAFG Quadrathalon), and the endorsement of 3 full members in good standing. Their sponsors did a great job in mentoring through the membership process! Congratulations Brian, Val, and Christine! We hope you have many safe and successful years shooting with us. 9 What a difference a year makes! For our inaugural Rimfire Action match a year ago last August, we had ankle deep mud on the Action Pistol Range with torrential downpours and eventually lightning that ended the match early. Yet the shooters still left with smiles on their faces and couldn t stop talking about how much fun they had. This year we had low humidity, sunny skies, and temps in the low 80s for our August match. And again, the shooters left saying what a good time they had and that they can t wait until next month s match. Ironically, we had 23 shooters for that inaugural match last August, and 23 shooters for the August match this year as well. Top shooters for the August match are as follows: 1st was Bob Yurwitz, who shot the match in seconds, 2nd was Jim Stansbury with a 75.35, and 3rd was Curran Kelly with a time of The full match results are posted on the website. This was the first match where we changed the miss penalties from 5 seconds to 3 seconds and it tightened the score differential between shooters a little, which is what we were hoping for. For complete match Rimfire Action results, go to the Disciplines tab and then follow the Rimfire Action Shoots link. Information and results for the match held on September 29 th will be in next month s SCORE. Several items to note: We will again be having our Turkey Shoot side match at the November Rimfire Action Shoot. 1 st prize will be a turkey, 2 nd prize will be a ham and 3 rd prize will be a chicken. Also, we will again run the December Rimfire Action Shoot on the 5 th Sunday of the month, December 29 th. The 4 th Sunday falls on the 22 nd which is just 3 days before Christmas. SHOOT SAFE HAVE FUN Guy Bellanca October Shotgun! As noted last month, trap machine #3 is now back in service and we are running two trap fields on the busy days when there are enough volunteers on duty to do so. Hopefully this will reduce waiting time between rounds. Shotgun Field Hours are 10:00 till 1:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Pole-trap hours are during Center-Fire hours only when the trap field is closed. To shoot from the pole-trap while the trap fields are open, you must get approval from the volunteer on duty. We will be starting a fall club shotgun competition on the first Friday in October. Competition will consist of your average scores from the normal 16-yard line and handicap shooting, and will run through the fall. Please don t let the term Competition concern you. New shooters will have an equal chance of being the top shooter as the seasoned shooters. Competition is for fun only with small prizes awarded at the end of the season. Competition Rules are attached. TRAP SHOOTERS TIP OF THE MONTH: Know where your gun is shooting. Spend a few minutes at the patterning board to verify your shot pattern. Don t hesitate to ask one of our volunteers to assist you at the board. If you have multiple chokes, try them and compare the patterns. Please repaint the board when you finish for the next shooter. Please remember that we need everyone to pitch in and help with whatever needs to be done, from cleaning the trailer to loading the trap houses. If we have two older folks on duty that day give them a hand with loading the trap house. Thanks, and be safe, Warren Isaac wisaac@atlanticbb.net 9 October 2013 AAF&G Score

14 President, from Page 1. Our 5 th sanctioned weekend of 2013 will also take place this month on the 12 th and 13 th. There is only one sanctioned weekend left in 2013 after October November 2 nd and 3 rd. These are your last chances to shoot from 10 am until dusk on Saturday and Sunday. If you don t get to the club as much as you would like on weekends due to the limited center fire hours, these last two sanctioned weekends are it. Speaking of limited center fire hours, please remember that Monday October 14 th is a Federal holiday. This means that center fire hours are limited to Saturday hours. They are 10am to 1pm! We have had a big change at the club. Dermott Hickey has decided to step down from heading up Buildings and Grounds. Dermott has headed this committee since before I became a member. We hate to see him go as he has done a great job year in and year out! I am glad to hear one of the reasons for his decision is he would like to have the time to shoot. I actually saw Dermott shooting trap. It was great to see him out on the range again! THANK YOU DERMOTT!! I would also like to announce that Greg Nolte has agreed to take over this very important position. Greg is a great guy and spends a lot of time at the club. I am sure he could use all the help he can get in his new position. If you would like to help Greg continue the great tradition Dermott has created over the years, Greg s address for this work is: aafgbuildingsandgrounds@gmail.com. If you see him around the club you can ask him how you can help.
