1 FEBRUARY 2017 Anne Arundel Fish & Game Conservation Association The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government. - Thomas Jefferson From the President Fellow AA&FGers, appy February and don t forget H February 14th is Valentine s Day. I think I spotted Cupid on our archery range recently with a quiver of golden arrows getting ready for the season. He must have been a guest since I don t recall seeing his name in our membership roster. He appears quite the accomplished archer and his aim seemed true so if he is after you, you might be in trouble. An amazing event I look forward to every February is the NRA Great American Outdoor Show, held in Harrisburg, PA, February 4th-12th this year. This is the largest outdoor show in the world. If you have never been to this event it is quite amazing and well worth the trip up to PA. Expect to see major firearm manufacturers and industry partners with many products on display, outfitters from around the world ready to book your next adventure, vendors selling all types of gear, celebrity appearances, etc. There is also a country music concert as well as many seminars and other events. It is a family friendly event too. Hunting, Fishing, Shooting, Archery, RVs, etc. are represented at the show in 650,000 square feet of exhibit hall. You might not be able to see it all in one day. More info can be found at greatamericanoutdoorshow.org/ Hope to see you on the range this month. Walt Romaniw aafg.elprez@gmail.com Plinking Range Please remember to clean up after shooting. Take home any cans and plastic bottles you brought with you as we have no storage space for such items. Two members, Thadeus Triandos and Andrew Keller, have been entered in two shoulder-to-shoulder competitions and both were cancelled due to weather. The Calvert High School NJROTC Holiday match was able to be shot as a postal match and the CMP State match was combined with the NJROTC Area 5 Championship held on January 21. So Thadeus and Andrew finally got to participate in a live match. Thadeus and Andrew both shot well for their first match. They both participated in the 4th Annual MSRPA Robert Inness Memorial Air Rifle match and the MD-CMP Air Rifle postal match. I m hoping by this October to have a four person team for local competitions. Mark your calendars for September 16, 2017 for the Annual Friends of the NRA Banquet to be held at the Annapolis Elks Club. Have Fun Shooting & Remember Youth are Our Future! 3 EDUCATION & TRAINING The AAF&G Training Department completed a NRA RSO Class in January - Eighteen new RSOs were minted and after formally applying to become AAFG RSOs you may see many of them out on the range wearing orange. Special thanks to all our volunteer RSO Instructors who ran the class (COLIN, WALT, JOHN and SKIP). Our next NRA RSO class will most likely be in the late Fall of this year. Please AAFG Training if you wish to become NRA RSO Certified and you will be notified once the next class is formalized. NRA Basic Pistol will be back. NRA has scrapped its "Blended" training approach as of late December 2016 and the original Basic Pistol Course will be brought back sometime this spring. As soon as those plans are finalized, AAFG will schedule such a class. Best estimate is late spring or early fall for NRA Basic Pistol at AAFG. Please AAFG Training if you wish to take the NRA Basic Pistol class and you will be notified once the next class if formalized. Please view the official AAF&G Training Schedule that can be found on the AAF&G Website under EDUCATION for future classes: We are also asking the membership for training feedback. Did you miss a specific class and want to see if it is offered again? Is there a class not offered that you feel will benefit the AAF&G community? Please contact the AAF&G Training team at: AAFG.Training@gmail.com. We want to hear from you!!! Eccles Range CLUB MATCHES Service Rifle Matches: The next Service Rifle/MSR/Any Rifle subject to the FSA of 2013 (except M1A) Match will be held on Saturday, February 4th from 10:00am to 12:00 noon. The NRA 500 match (see below) will be held on the preceding Friday, February 3rd from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. In 2016 we began offering a Service Rifle match relay the Friday afternoon preceding the first Saturday in order to reduce the crowding at the Saturday match while still offering the opportunity to compete. That has proven to be popular with many shooters using the early relay also as a chance to practice for the Saturday match. In order to provide a bit of spice to the Service Rifle matches while still maintaining the Friday relay there will be a little bit of a change up in that the Friday relay will be an NRA 500 match. NRA 500 matches involve 50 rounds in a course of fire described below. The NRA 500 course of fire consists of: 10 rds Offhand Slow Fire at 200 yd targets 10 rds Rapid Fire sitting at 200 yd targets starting in the sitting position. 10 rds Rapid Fire prone at 300 yd targets starting in the prone position. 20 rds Slow Fire prone at 600 yd targets starting in the prone position. Normally one would have two sighters before each string but since that would really slow the match down (since we have no pits to pull and mark targets and have to walk down range to score and repair them). If competitors need sighters they could always slip in a quick sighter period before commencement of the match. Note that the final two phases involve shooting at 300 and 600 yard targets. Just as our service rifle matches are not conducted at the regulation 200 yards but at 100 yards using reduced size targets, the 300 and 600 yard phases will likewise use reduced size targets so the virtual image you will see in your sight is what you would see were the regulation size target actually at 300 or 600 yards. The only difference is that there is a shorter projectile flight time and thus less exposure to wind and other environmental factors. Another difference between this NRA 500 match and the CMP style match held on Saturday is that for the Rapid Fire Sitting and Prone phases, the shooter STARTS IN POSITION! There is no starting from a standing position and then dropping into the shooting position. Older or less limber shooters may find this feature appealing. Shooters should also note that unlike the CMP style Service Rifle matches where the shooter progresses from the prone to the offhand/ standing positions, in the NRA 500 matches the shooter starts out in the offhand/standing position while still fresh, then moves to the sitting position, and finishes up prone with 20 rds slow fire at the end providing an opportunity to recover from errant shots in the offhand or sitting positions. However, the advantages of starting in position and ending in the prone position are somewhat offset by the fact that the 10 ring of the 600 yard targets are reeeeeaaaallly small so this is still a challenging match for all. This match was initially presented at the January 2017 Friday relay and was well received so we hope it continues to attract shooters looking for something a bit different. As has been done since starting the Friday afternoon match, the Friday NRA 500 relay will be scheduled for the Friday before the first Saturday of the month and the regular Service Rifle 30 rd match will continue to be scheduled on the traditional and customary first Saturday of the month. Friday s match will be held at 2:00PM and the Saturday matches will continue to be held at 10:00AM. An will go out to regular High Power Shooters the week of the match to remind of the Friday opportunity. Shooters are encouraged to reserve a relay prior to the match by replying to the . As always new shooters are encouraged to arrive early to become familiar with the course of fire for the match and Eccles Range, continued on Page 4. AAF&G Score February

4 Eccles Range, from Page 3. instruction. Match scores from the Friday 500 relay will be recorded separately from the Saturday relay CMP style Service Rifle match scores. Vintage Military Rifle Match: The next Vintage Military Rifle Match will be held on February 18th from 10:00am to 12:00 noon and will be for Semiauto Rifles. New Service Rifle and Vintage Military Rifle Match shooters should consider arriving NLT 9:30am Saturday in order to familiarize themselves with the course of fire and get guidance in positions and use of the sling. A five minute unlimited sighter shots sighting-in period will precede the record fire phases. For details on high power rifle match requirements, please visit the web page at events.html. Patio heaters at Eccles While rifle shooters have always prided themselves on being hardy shooters and both able and willing to shoot a 30 rd match while the snow is still falling on the icy ground (yes, even before we had a roof), why suffer if you don t have to? Well, maybe now we don t have to. We now have two propane fueled infra-red patio heaters to help alleviate some of the chill Eccles users may experience this winter. This is thanks to the thoughtfulness of member Eddy Esworthy of Targetworx who has loaned them to Eccles for the duration of winter weather. They will disappear in the spring hopefully to reappear next winter. Operation is simple lift the sliding outer cover at the bottom to expose the 20# propane tank. Turn on the propane. Then farther up the heater shaft is a rotary switch and igniter button. Turn the fuel on at the top and ignite the burner. If you are the last one to leave the Eccles range, don t forget to turn off the burners and turn off the propane at the tank as well. If the tank is empty, you are welcome to provide your own or let us know (wpalk@verizon.net) and we ll see about getting a refill. Again, many thanks to Eddy Esworthy for thinking of us this winter. Shoot Straight and Shoot Safely! Bill Palk Eccles Range Committee Chair QUOTES TO NOTE! A free people ought not only be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammuntion to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them which would include their own government. George Washington Mother Nature has not been kind to us this past month, we've either had very cold or very wet weekends. Through it all a group of die-hard trap shooters have managed to get in some rounds of trap. We so look forward to warmer weather, but if you have cabin fever and need to get out for a little bit, come join us on Fridays and Saturday mornings. If it is not too windy the fire pit will be lit and the heat is on inside the trailer to warm up between rounds. We have a new loaner 12 ga. pump shotgun available that we can adjust to women or young adult shooters. Any new provisional members can come and we will get them through their shotgun requirements. We ask that you arrive early so that we will have ample time to give you the instructions that you need. As always, #8 shot trap loads Bob Yurwitz ATTENTION SHOOTERS! Keep watching the SCORE and the AAF&G forums for the date of our AAF&G FLEA MARKET. It will be held in either May or June, the date to be determined. Bring anything you don t need that one of your fellow members might want to buy. You will need to bring your own blankets or tables to display your wares. Guns, reloading gear, holsters, camping gear, fishing gear, bring it all! Remember, all Firearms transfer laws will be followed. Regards, John Michelli AAF&G Score February
