3 MINUTES OF SAM 21 MEETING MEETING OF May 24, 2012 The meeting was called to order by President Brian Sargent at 7:10 PM. There were 12 members present and there were no guests. The minutes of the April meeting were approved by voice vote after one correction. The Treasurers report by Lescher Dowling showed we were still solvent and our membership stays the same at 48. The income from the silent auction held in conjunction with the April meeting was a profit of $46. The competition report by Dave Lewis advised that no one was going to the fun fly at the Woodland-Davis field presented by SAM 51 since there might be wind and rain. There will be a Weagell Field contest on June 2 and then our contest follows on June SAM 30 is putting on a fun fly at the Schmidt Ranch on 21 July. CD Jake Chichilitti advised that everything was just about ready for our annual contest and the awards are being worked on. He will get in touch with Steve Roselle about the score-cards. The food situation was discussed. Our Collecto at Vanderbend is set for November 10, 2012, the second Saturday in November so there won't be a conflict with the South County club auction as has been the case in the past. The info on the Collecto will be sent to MECA as soon as possible. Bill Copeland showed an example of the participation plaques for our annual contest. It was in kit form and they will have to be assembled. It was apparent that a "work party" should be formed to make up the kits, some 35 or so have to be put together. When they are assembled, they will look good. Dave Lewis asked Bill Copeland about the "Altitude Limiting Device" that was in his editorial in this month's CLIPPER. Bill said the price is about $50 each and he didn't have one to bring to this month's meeting, but he will definitely have one at the June meeting. Show and Tell: Ken Martinez brought his Buzzard Bombshells that are now finished (one wing - two fuselages). One is for 1/2A Texaco and the other for Speed 400, both very nice. 4 Notes From The Right Seat Well, the biggest event of the year for SAM 21 is in the books. The much anticipated Ranch Romp was held on June 9th and 10th with mixed results. Since seemingly consecutive years of scheduling the event in the historic month of May, it was decided to move the date to June in hopes of attracting better (read flyable ) weather. Unfortunately the move only solved half of the problem. Early attendants on Saturday had trouble walking, the wind was blowing so hard. Sustained breezes of 15 to 20, gusting to 30 or so made it easy to stay in the club house and eat Miriam's famous pancakes. It also made it easy for CD Jake Chichilitti to call a no fly day. That worked for everyone except Steve Roselle who bravely assembled his tried and true speed 400 Dallaire, (Lewis built),and tossed it to the wind gods. Though they didn t directly toss it back, it became readily apparent that the only control inputs required were to try to maintain a steady heading directly into the wind while trying to find enough down elevator to allow enough forward speed to avoid being blown to Stockton. That being the only flying for Saturday, everyone retired to regroup for Sunday, with an optimistic forecast of some wind early moderating as the day progressed. Those who stayed over were treated to a delicious BBQ d steak dinner prepared by 21 president and chef in perpetuity, Brian Sargent. All agreed it was worth the price of admission! Sunday morning started much as Saturday had except the wind was only blowing a mild 10 to 15 mph. Let the flying begin! And so it did. By 10 o clock the wind had moderated as predicted, a once in a lifetime happening, and flying intensified. Lift was spotty but as usual, available only to the high climbers. The most dramatic event occurred around 11:00. Dave Lewis had put up his Chinese Bomber and was well on his way to a good flight. Still several hundred feet high, everything was going well and Dave was doing his usual grumbling about the absence of lift, politics, the lunch schedule, etc., except, from a take off spot adjacent to where Dave had launched, Gary Leopold took off with his beautiful Miss America. This is not an unusual practice. But, as he climbed higher his model had reached the altitude of Dave s model. What happened next was spectacular to say the least and almost unheard of in SAM competition, the two planes collided in mid-air.gary s Miss America had chewed off about 1/3 of Dave s Bombers left elevator and stab. Miss America continued almost unscathed, but the Bomber was uncontrollable and landed (crashed) in a steep left turn adding additional damage. Gary was shaken, but continued his flight. Dave was stunned as he tried to figure out what happened. (see pics on following pages.) The rest of the day was rather anticlimactic. Results were announced, certificates were awarded. And a drawing was held. The event attracted visitors and entrants from Tennessee, From The May Meeting... Breaking News - Bill Alberta Passes As soon as I saw the address on the envelope, I knew Norma Alberta wrote on June 17th: I just want to inform the ones who know him that after a battle with cancer, Bill passed away on January 29, He enjoyed flying all his life and loved coming to Las Vegas and California and also Arizona meets (ED: to fly with George Joki). We also went to Oklahoma - I remember that one. Since I have Parkinson's, I m in assisted living - no more Red Lodge address, I sold the house there and I m at: Tender Nest 120 W. 12th street Laurel, MT Tele: (more next month) God Speed Bill... Sorry, there will be no pictures of the May meeting as, unfortunately, I lost my camera bag/camera somewhere between taking pictures at the meeting and arriving home after the meeting??? Anyone who found a black bag containing an Olympus Epl-2, backup batteries, extra cards please bring it to the meeting. A Really Big Deal Steal... I have 13 boxes of untablulated magazines from Bob Von- Konski's collection, passed to Bill Bowen, that Bill gave to me. Also my collections of FM, MAN, RCM, MB, AIR PRO- GRESS, just to name a few. Some Air Trails and others dating from the late 30, 40s 50, 60s and newer. I have yet to do a current tabulation of mine, but hope to get to it soon. I'll make someone a really great deal on them! Call Steve Roselle at: Or, him at: sroselle@earthlink.net SAM 26 and SAM 27 - one each. Lunch each day satisfied everyone, thanks again to our 21 cook master Brian Sargent. A total of 44 flights were recorded, two on Saturday and 42 on Sunday, by a total of 11 contestants out of the 19 who signed the AMA Participation Form. CD Jake Chichilitti and his assistant, Steve Roselle, performed admirably under the circumstances. No fist fights were observed,,, Two first time SAM contestants performed well. 21 president, Brian Sargent walked off with a First Place in 1/2 A Texaco, and new 21 member, Ken Martinez won second place in both 1/2 A Texaco and Speed 400. Well done newbie's. The venerable Dave Lewis was declared Grand Champion in spite of his unnerving participation in the Mid-Air - sorry about that Dave. See results opposite My personal thanks to Lescher Dowling and Steve Roselle for most of the pictures of the event... The CLIPPER - - newsletter of of SAM April June 2012 Page 44

8 More on Altitude Limiting Much to my surprise, most of the response to last month s Editorial turned out to be interested, but reserved rather than critical. I first heard from Mike Clancy from SAM 27. Mike ed I felt that the ALES device was not necessary for old timers, however after reading Bill's column about reducing power for the glow events and even the possibility of flying glow and ignition together I have had second thoughts. I'm not promoting anything here, just providing some thoughts. It would be a fairly simple matter to incorporate the ALES device to handle engine cutoff. ( I hate the modern term nitro ) engines. I have an Airborn with a Veco.19, running 30% nitro, and turning an 8x4 composite prop (really fast). This ship is both frightening and fun to fly! It is ridiculously overpowered, but that power is necessary to be competitive in A Glow. That being said, after flying that plane I really, really enjoy the relaxing flight of my 1/2A Texaco Playboy, and my e-texaco Playboy Cabin. And when I am sport flying the little Airborn I run 10% fuel and a 9x6 prop--a little more relaxing. Thanks Mike for your thoughtful response. While AMA (our insurer) only notes an altitude limit (400ft) within 5 miles of an airport, in the future can or should we risk ignore setting a reasonable altitude limit and wait for those who have the power to make the rules? Now, having had the opportunity of discussing the Altitude Limited concept with several SAM modelers at the SAM 21 Ranch Romp event, I am encouraged that, as more clarification is provided, and real time testing proceeds the idea might just take wing, at least as a test event at a future Fun Fly, or as contest events unfold. The planned testing program to establish reasonable achievable altitudes will be conducted using two typical models: a B Glow Leisure Bomber using an O.S..25 Schnerle and a Mark II Clipper using an O&R.60, large port. The plan is to repeat at least three flights each using SAM rules engine run times to average the altitudes achieved by each. This program should be useful to determine the sight height, that is: are the models easy enough to see at these altitudes? and, average no lift flight times using 4 minutes as a reasonable nominal time. It is noted that neither of these models have a history of overachieving, but may deliver a bench mark that can be used to establish a reasonable altitude cut off (perhaps varying for each event?) Results of testing will be made available - depending on weather. We have also considered the possibility that there may be those who will be thinking of ways to find advantages in the system while remaining within the cut off rule. (what? SAM competitors plot to defeat rules?) For example, what if a competitor who has a Texaco type model and plans to lurk just below the altitude limit height for the extent of their engine run time of 5 to 12 minutes? There are actually two solutions here: 1) limit engine run times and altitude limits for the flight (possible using Altitude Limiter technology). Finding out more about the altitude limiting system we note that it is possible to use both altitude cut off and engine cut off for each flight, so much for lurking and; 2) time only glide time after altitude/engine cut off. Texaco events would continue to compete by current SAM rules and be exempt from ACOFF. (Altitude Cut OFF) There are probably other ways to bend the rules yet to be uncovered, but we will leave that discussion for another time. The Sacramento Valley Soaring Society modelers have worked out a system for ensuring all models are using the same parameters during the same event. In fact the idea is working so well that they now hold an ALES event on the first Saturday of each month. (see: Sacramento Valley Soaring Society.org) Their event works like this: the sponsoring Club purchases a sufficient number of Altitude Cut Off modules to allow many models to fly at the same time and preprograms each module according to the rules of the day. They use a limited window mass launch format which insures that everyone flies in the same air. When each modeler is ready to fly, he/she obtains a Cut Off Module from a contest official, plugs the pre programmed module into his control circuit and proceeds to fly, returning the module to an official who can then check to see if the appropriate parameters are still shown in the module. (this might require an official to visually connect delivery of the module to take off) Nah, that s too heavy. Advantages to the ACOFF system include: 1) generally shorter flight times - thereby shortening contests; 2) nearly eliminating ties - therefore few, if any fly offs which also leads to shorter contests; 3) the possibility of head to head glo/ignition competition, also potentially reduces the number of events to be contested, shortening contests; 4) the ACOFF format could accommodate mass launches so that everyone flies in the same air. 5) if head to head glo/ign could become a reality, it would potentially drastically reduce scoring effort, reduce the costs of providing prizes and produce true winners. All of these advantages appear to lead to less organizational pressure, less cost to produce, may make one day contests possible (see: Fun Fly s), and last, but not least, more Fun! It should be noted here that there is no effort in this proposal to change the current SAM rules or format of the SAM Champs. As the above noted test program is completed we will report the results and perhaps recommend ACOFF draft contest rules. Stay tuned The CLIPPER - - newsletter of of SAM April June 2012 Page 88
