3 P a g e 3 Serene Hills Air Park Analysis by Jim Gibson Serene Hills Air Park By Jim Gibson, Aero-Tow CD and Coordinator Last weekend I made a field trip to the Serene Hills Air Park in La Center, WA. The air park is the flying field for the Serenity Flyers RC Club. The field owner and driving force for the field and club is Steve Canter. The flying field is located on a portion of Steve's property where he has leveled off two intersecting runways that generally run N-S & NE-SW. The runways are on a north facing slope on his property that is generally wide open to the north and is really very picturesque. See the enclosed photos to get a general idea of the field. The runway in the photo is the shorter of the two ~225 feet. The other runway is ~275 feet. The runway is stabilization fabric used under roads. The purpose of my trip was to talk to Steve about utilizing the flying field for our aero-tow events. Steve is very interested and supportive in having club members come up and fly. The field is great for electrics, ALES and slope flying. The field is not quite long enough for setting up a winch, but a hi start would be possible so long as launching was to the north. Landing could be a test of piloting skills due to the north facing slope and the wind direction. Aero-tow might be possible by utilizing the grass field to the west of the runways, but again might be a challenge for landing. It might be fun to schedule a fun fly(fossil Fliers??) at the field this spring so Steve can see the type of flying we do and we get a chance to fly at a new location. As I noted previously, Steve is very interested in having fliers use the field. As with any of our fields fliers need to be AMA members and contact Steve as the field is on his property. I've noted the web site link and Steve's phone number below for interested fliers. Steve Canter Phone:

4 P a g e PASS annual banquet by Bruce Rose The 2014 PASS annual banquet was held on Saturday evening, January 25 at Denicola s Restaurant in southeast Portland. About 45 club members and guests enjoyed a pleasant evening of conversation, Italian food served family style, spirits and awards. Dave Johnson was recognized by his fellow club members for his long standing contribution to the club in conducting the monthly raffles and the annual big honkin raffle. To recognize his contributions, Dave received a gift certificate co-sponsored by Tammie s Hobbies. Roger Breedlove was also recognized by the club members for his many contributions to the club once again this past year. Some of the contributions Roger has made for many years are dogging members so that he can regularly publish a great newsletter, taking meeting minutes when the secretary is not in attendance, coordinating the Fossil Flyers Club activities and distributing information to the club members via messages. Roger also received a gift certificate which was co-sponsored by Tammie s Hobbies. The 2013 competition season winners were acknowledged and their names have been added to the perpetual trophies. Overall Season Points Terry Erickson Hand Launched Glider Craig Robinson F5B Dan Fiedler February Floater Dave Portwood ALES Mike Skeen (this will be a new club trophy) PUTZ Dave Portwood Bruce Alber awarded attendance raffle prizes which were co-sponsored by Tammie s Hobbies and Coyote Hobbies. Dave Johnson conducted the Big Honkin Raffle and distributed a large collection of prizes including RTF airplanes and rotorcraft and gift certificates from local merchants. Dave added an interesting change to the raffle this year. Each member was able to put their raffle tickets in a bag associated with a particular prize. Tickets for a prize were drawn only from the bag for that prize. Most, if not all, of the attendees appeared to be please with the change Dave instituted. Special thanks go to Tom Culmsee for organizing the banquet and doing a fantastic job once again. By Bruce Rose, President

Snipe by Vladimir's Models, Craig sez Although not totally comfortable with the low time Snipe, I flew it in the first round. This was a 5 x two minute max task and it made all maxes and most of the last flight to win the round. I flew it again in the second round but it decided to roost in the bare naked Cottonwood tree half way through the round (shouldn't have named it after a bird...). I finished that round and the rest of the contest with another plane. The Snipe launches well and flies great! Just a few more tree dings to repair and it will fly again. Looking forward to warmer days! Club meetings held on second Tuesday of every month from 7:30 to 9:30 P.M. at Round Table Pizza, SW Barbur Blvd. Visitors are welcome. 10 P a g e 10 February 2 Floater results by Kevin Martin February 2 Floater results Kevin and Sherrell, Co-CDs A very nice day for early February mostly sunny with a high of 47. We flew a 5 minute ID followed by four rounds of 8 minute ID. Sherrill devised a challenging landing task that few people were able to score. Robin Robinson was landing champion for the day by hitting points on two rounds. Ken Eaton was the only minor casualty of the day by landing well up in a tree. Fortunately he was able to climb the tree and dissemble the plane and lower to the ground with a string piece-by-piece. He then reassembled it and flew the remaining rounds. 1 David Portwood Sherrill Steinhauer Tom Culmsee Robin Robinson Dave Johnson Del Delashmutt Jason Hood Kyle Kroker Ken Eaton John Long Keith Ragsdale John S.
