Meeting called to order by Pres. Bruce Rose at 7:38 PM. 2. Treasure s report by Tom C. Balance in the bank: $1, Show sell: ALES glider Ready to fly FOR $ February floater contest reports. 18 pilots and Portwood won. Last contest had a temperature drop, and Portwood still won. Cool, but no wind. 5. Dave gave us a preview of stuff for future raffles. But the attendance raffle was being collected by Bruce Alber. 6. Curt Coleman shared about his scratch design of 1/6 scale of a 1938 sailplane. a The gull wing with a 93 wing span. It will be sold by Aero Centre ( J. Martin RC) th Anniversary items: Pins, T-Shirts, Decals 8. Alan Halleck shared about his latest wing design. He built the wing skins in home made molds. 9. Lowell shared about his 3D park Funtana flyer. 10. No Raffle because of low attendance. Adjournment at 8:30. Tom Fowler, Secy Flying Field change to adjacent field. As of March 13th we will be using the field adjacent to and on the right side and south of our current field. We will still use the same parking lot and you will have to carry your planes about 200 to the new field. Terry will cover the change at our meeting on Tuesday if you have any questions. They are harvesting the current field. Please give Terry a call if you have any questions Note: Both fields were closed for two weeks because of heavy rain. Perhaps that will change in April... Hope so. Terry will give an update at the meeting. PASS Meeting Notice for April 10th. The next regular club meeting will be on Tuesday the 10th, at the Pizza place! Usual times... 2 P a g e 2 March 4 Floater Results by Kevin Martin Co-CDs Kevin Martin, Sherrell Steinhauer The weather was crummy for the last February Floater so it was canceled. However, the weather for the first Sunday in March looked promising so we rescheduled for March 4 (since March 4 was not a scheduled makeup date, it will not count for the Floater championship). It was supposed to be sunny March 4 but instead we were greeted with low clouds, but no wind. Launches with a zoom in the first round ended up in the clouds. However, the ceiling soon lifted enough to stop causing problems. Light lift was plentiful and many flyers made all five of the 7-minute rounds. The sun started to peek out about 1:00 and by the time the contest was finished the skies were almost completely clear. 3 P a g e 3 Slope Race event March 10 by Tom Fowler, CD A little contest report about a contest that was really a fun fly slope event because we did not have enough flyers to make it a real contest. We had 2 fliers with 60" planes (Terry and Bruce) and 2 fliers with unlimited slope planes (Pat and Tom). With only 4 flyers and no helpers, we could only fly two at a time anyway with on non-pilot calling the turns for both pilots with a walkie-talkie and the other non-pilot calling the start and keeping track of lengths on the course. So the unlimited planes went first(pat and Tom) with Terry calling the start and Bruce calling the turns at the far end. We scratch the first heat because of rain and walkie-talkie malfunctions. After the rain squall passed we went out to race two heats, one after the other without landing to same time and prevent unnecessary landing carnage. We wanted the 60 inch racers to have a chance to race in case the wing died down, so Pat and Tom Landed, without incident I might add. Tom won both heats. We waited out another rain squall, and then Terry and Bruce launched with Pat calling the start and Tom calling he turns. They did all 3 heats of 10 lengths each as the wind was strong (20mph+) with Terry taking 2 heats and Bruce winning one. We waited out another rain quall, ate our lunch and got ready for the third heat of the unlimited. The wind had picked up, so Pat loaded up his plane with ballast for better penetration and speed. We had good height and a fast start and then Pat's walkie-talkie was not working so he could not hear the call to turn. Pat landed to get his walkie-talkie working, but his landing was a little to hard for his V tail which was now a flatter V. So we called it a day and said "good enough". Slope flying is quite exciting but is also fickle in that it is more weather dependent than other types of flying. Having the right wind direction and the right wind speed on the day of a contest is what makes this type of fickle. Slope sites are also quite limited because of the conditions needed: access, height of the hill, and a nice landing zone (grass, no trees, no rocks). There seem to be more low wind or no wind days than good wind days which makes slope flying frustrating. But when the everything lines up, (wind speed, direction, and no rain) it is an adrenalin event. Each type of flying has its challenges, but those of us that enjoy the excitement of speed and efficient turns are more inclined to prefer slope flying over the other types of glider flying. Hopefully the jinx of no slope events the past several years has been broken by today's "slope fun fly". Tom Fowler, CD
